Title: Re: From Free-Reed's website: "'RT'- The life and Music of Richard Thompson" Post by: spooley (Simon) on September 04, 2005, 07:11:28 PM I've recently treated myself to the Free Reed "Cropredy Capers" box set and have been listening to that over the weekend.
The accompanying guidebook makes fascinating reading, and the whole ensemble does a marvellous job of summing-up and capturing the delights of the Cropredy festival. If the RT set is half as good as this - it'll be a must-have. As to the contents, there's a little info on RT's Beesweb site: Quote RT Boxed Set Pre-orders 3/10/05 (updated 3/10/05) Representatives from Free Reed Records and Music met with Richard Thompson last week to pool ideas and give the boxed set its final overall shape. It will consist of five CDs, plus a bonus CD available with the first pressing. Each CD will be themed: 1) Songs based on real people, places, and events 2) Epic guitar workouts 3) Unreleased songs 4) Cover versions and sessions 5) Essential RT The bonus CD is yet to be finalized. The majority of the inclusive recordings will be of previously unreleased material. Richard Thompson has loaned Free Reed a large amount of music and memorabilia from his own archives – so likelihood is that even the most conscientious collector will find things that are new. An early 2006 release is planned. Simon. Title: Re: From Free-Reed's website: "'RT'- The life and Music of Richard Thompson" Post by: Keith on September 04, 2005, 08:27:39 PM I wonder if there will be much crossover with "Watching the Dark". Some of the live recordings and unreleased stuff is pretty rough and RT's voice is nothing like as good as at Cropredy this year on most of them.

:-\ :-\ would prefer chronological really - those pesky themed discs never, imho, run very well. Would prefer to take a musical journey, if you will, from the early days up to now. cheers simon Title: Re: From Free-Reed's website: "'RT'- The life and Music of Richard Thompson" Post by: Chris on September 05, 2005, 03:52:38 PM would prefer chronological really - those pesky themed discs never, imho, run very well. Would prefer to take a musical journey, if you will, from the early days up to now. Me too - but unfortunately, that is the favoured way of Free Reed. Nigel Schofield (50% of Free Reed) is resident on the RT email list & is the source for Flip's website mentioned above. A little birdy tells me (& it's NOT Nigel) that the box get's a launch at the BBC Folk Awards next year (I wonder why?!?! Title: Re: From Free-Reed's website: "'RT'- The life and Music of Richard Thompson" Post by: Jonathan on September 05, 2005, 04:51:52 PM I agree, I think I would prefer a chronological approach, as opposed to a theme. But, so far, that's my only complaint regarding Free Reed's boxes. And really, that's not that much of a complaint.
Yes, some of songs on the Swarb box are really rough sounding, but I'd rather have a rare performance (especially of a rarely performed song) that's a little rough, than a pristine performance of a song we've all heard a million times. But, I understand opinions differ. How is the "Watching the Dark" box? I've been tempted to pick it up several times, but I usually buy another RT CD instead. Usually from his website, like one of the live releases. Title: Re: From Free-Reed's website: "'RT'- The life and Music of Richard Thompson" Post by: Nick on September 06, 2005, 01:26:38 PM It sounds strange to say but Chronological Order is difficult when the recordings are a mix of live performances. Do you consider the age of the track itself or the age of the recording?
For example, say the compilation has two tracks: Crazy Man Michael, recorded on last year's solo UK tour and a demo recording of Vincent Black Lightning. Which should come first and which second? That should be fairly clear-cut and most would say VBL first, CMM second (since CMM played solo is clearly an updated version of the song.) For a more difficult example, what about the two tracks; Night Comes In recorded live in 1975 and The Calvary Cross recorded live in 1976? Cheers Nick Title: Re: From Free-Reed's website: "'RT'- The life and Music of Richard Thompson" Post by: Chris on September 13, 2005, 10:41:51 AM The latest from Free Reed....

Title: Re: From Free-Reed's website: "'RT'- The life and Music of Richard Thompson" Post by: Chris on November 02, 2005, 03:10:32 PM These are designed by Free Reed though - and they haven't done any other RT releases as yet.
Title: Re: From Free-Reed's website: "'RT'- The life and Music of Richard Thompson" Post by: Jonathan on November 02, 2005, 09:33:32 PM My only "complaint" is that there seems to be little really old material. A demo of "Genesis Hall" from the 60's, not all that much from the 70's (except on the 5th CD), so most of it is from the 80's and 90's.
I like the stuff from the 80's and 90's, I just also really like the 70's material as well. Though, I suppose they want the focus to be RT solo, not necessarily with Linda or with Fairport. Just a preference to see more of the material from the 70's. I actually saw RT with DT last night at the Birchmere in Alexandria, VA (review to follow in the next day or so), and aside from "Hockey Pokey," I think that was the only pre-80's song he did. And again, I would loved to see him do some early songs. Not really a complaint I guess, just a preference. It was a great show last night, and I'm really looking forward to the box set. So, ya, I'll stop with the run on sentences and general blathering... Title: Re: From Free-Reed's website: "'RT'- The life and Music of Richard Thompson" Post by: Pat Helms on November 02, 2005, 09:50:30 PM Relative to my knowledge, there are a couple of decent soundboards broadcasts from the late 70's, but most of the recordings from HENRY to POUR DOWN are limited to inferior, high generation (although, to me, enjoyable) audience recordings. Much of the demos of interest from that period 68 - 75 have been already chronicled in the DOOM & GLOOM series and WATCHING THE DARK as well as all of the various Fairport, Sandy & Guv'nor retrospectives.
Tons of stuff from the 80's forward, 'cause RT started allowing folks to patch into the board, resulting in an abundance of quality recordings. ;D Title: Re: From Free-Reed's website: "'RT'- The life and Music of Richard Thompson" Post by: Jonathan on November 03, 2005, 10:01:56 PM Good point, if RT was rolling that much tape during the 70's, there's nothing to release.
Like you wrote, aside from some radio broadcasts, if there wasn't much recorded, there isn't much to release. Title: Re: From Free-Reed's website: "'RT'- The life and Music of Richard Thompson" Post by: Pat Helms on November 06, 2005, 12:05:49 AM I was hoping the box set might include some stuff from the Oxford Polytech gig in '75. I have an audience version of the complete show and it has a wonderful set list, covering material from HENRY thru SILVER. A soundboard version of the whole show surely must exist, since 3 tracks were included on GUITAR / VOCAL, namely Calvary Cross and Night Comes In.
Title: Re: From Free-Reed's website: "'RT'- The life and Music of Richard Thompson" Post by: Shane (Skirky) on January 12, 2006, 06:32:00 PM For those who aren't sure of whether to go for this one, the new The Word magazine has a lengthy review this month (it should be out soon if not yet) which seeems to do a nice summing up job. Interestingly, they also comment on the cover art ::) Since I was promised one for Christmas, I look forward to compiling all the best bits on to one handy-for-the-car CD.
Title: Re: From Free-Reed's website: "'RT'- The life and Music of Richard Thompson" Post by: steve-n on January 18, 2006, 06:07:58 PM Only because no-one seems to have mentioned it, there was also one of those question/answer type features in the Independent over the weekend. I think it was the Sunday magazine, but, sadly, the council collect our recycling on Tuesday( Too much information?)
Title: Re: From Free-Reed's website: "'RT'- The life and Music of Richard Thompson" Post by: Goaty on February 09, 2011, 04:00:33 PM Blimey! Took me a while finding this so as not to start a new topic ::)
It's got to the point where I now need to sell things that I don't want to sell >:( I've a copy of this box set, WITH the 6th CD, in perfect condition. I seem to recall one went on ebay a while ago for silly money but can't remember how much (well over £100). Before I decide whether to sell it or not, can anyone suggest what this might fetch today ? Title: Re: From Free-Reed's website: "'RT'- The life and Music of Richard Thompson" Post by: macademis on February 09, 2011, 04:25:05 PM Not sparkling news for you methinks - when I went on to the FreeReed site it is advertised at £44.99, but it gets worse/better (depending on whether you are selling or buying), when you click Buy Now, it comes up at £30. Perhaps a candidate for Bargain Bin....
Title: Re: From Free-Reed's website: "'RT'- The life and Music of Richard Thompson" Post by: Goaty on February 09, 2011, 04:28:24 PM Thanks, but I'm under the impression that the limited release 6th CD fetches the silly money, not the 5 disc box on its own ?
Title: Re: From Free-Reed's website: "'RT'- The life and Music of Richard Thompson" Post by: macademis on February 09, 2011, 04:36:53 PM I presume it is: "The first 5,000 copies sold include the offer of a 6th write-in CD!" - in which case I wouldn't know, but good luck.
Title: Re: From Free-Reed's website: "'RT'- The life and Music of Richard Thompson" Post by: Chris on February 09, 2011, 04:41:48 PM I'd heard that they haven't all sold & still includes the 6th. You'll need to email Free Reed and check.
Title: Re: From Free-Reed's website: "'RT'- The life and Music of Richard Thompson" Post by: Jules Gray on February 09, 2011, 06:44:58 PM I picked up a copy with the 6th disc at Croppers in 2007, and they were still in plentiful supply then. I think they pressed up more than they might have let on.
I still reckon you'd get £75 for it though. At least. Jules |
