Chris Newman should be good as well. Havn't seen him since he toured with Fred wedlock. His solo spots were always good.

Can I just add an 'agree with all the above' post (apart from the Chris Newman one - I've not seen Fred Wedlock either..) and wait for some moderation and tidying up later? Now, where's that Olly, allow me to buy him a large congratulatory lemonade. I have actually seen WR, and I think they'll be this year's Tiny Tin Lady.

I haven't replied sooner because I'd love to see Steeleye at Croppers but I'm not sure if we're going next year  >:(  (Trying to pretend it's not happening, lol).

Thing is, now our eldest into her GCSE years we won't be taking any hols in term time which means that the 2 week jaunt to somewhere sunny will have to be taken in the main summer hols (can't get easter off either).  Added to that, that Mr Ana has suddenly got fed up with 'all this folky b@ll@cls' so it would mean that I go on my own.  Going to be difficult to get all of Cropredy off and get 2 weeks abroad aswell.  Oh and it would be our wedding anniversary on the Friday.

Frustrated.

Ana

You're never on your own at Cropredy, Ana - don't kid yourself!
Can't you get two weeks & two days holiday?....then you could come down for the Thursday & Saturday (with a B&B on Saturday so you can drink, and spent the FRiday (all-day!) with Mr Ana & celebrate the anniversary properly....

Cheers Chris  :-*  No worries, I have several cunning plans... I can't see me missing it.  If it REALLY comes down to it, then we don't have a 2 week holiday abroad.  Selfish maybe, but I don't do alot for myself the rest of the year!  Lucky for me I know quite a lot of peeps who go so I'll always have someone to camp with.  What I don't have a cunning plan for is how to leave the girls at home  ;D

how do-es a newbie go about asking someone to get that big fish or bigger fish or something on again, first band we caught this time round and set things up superbly.
zeppelin, porcupine tree, and bits that just melged into some summer haze, want more.

At Cropredy, backstage hospitality is provided only for the crew, technicians, sparkies and riggers.
The artists enjoy the same hospitality as the paying public, if they want a beer, they go to the bar, if they want to eat, they visit Leon, just like everybody else.
In summary, the catering for artists is pretty damn good, but it ain't free. On the other hand as Jude so rightly says, the hospitality is second to none.

No I wasn't - what I meant was that what you write needs to make sense....
Spelling & Grammar aren't necessarily necessary....

Quote

Other than Richard Digance, I don't think any act has been booked two years running. Probably because there are many good acts around, and it'd be silly not to get as many as possible...I'm sure bands would like to play two years running - it's a booking policy.

Title: Re: Cropredy 06 bands announced

and on booking policies it is well known that bands have only been booked if Peggy has seen them himself - word of mouth and recommendations are not good enough.

So, maybe complementary tickets to Fairport Towers when playing in the area may help.

espescially the childrens area, spent a whole day in there with our two and still felt like part of the festival, excellent job all round.

Jones The Steam....one thing you will see (if you haven't seen it already) is that you can ask any question you like and if there is an answer ... then someone is bound to provide it. Obviously, there are some topics that have their answer elsewhere .... if it is a matter of opinion, then as you would anywhere else, try not to tweak noses (too hard) when expressing them

Ill judged ? - I dunno, mate..... maybe being a bit harsh on yourself there. Don't go hiding under that Fez now !

As for Cropredy 2006 - I would love a bit of Country on Friday or Saturday afternoon - lovely bit of bluegrass with high-octane banjo playing... fantastic..... wonder what the Old Crow Medicine Show are doing next August ?

cheers mate, and like the idea of country afternoon too, thought it was a little too rock this time round, so if they're going to be branching out something sit-down-to-able would be more than welcome of a sunny day.
not that bluegrass is mellow i know, but less rock covers bands i think.

Not according to Peggy himself on internet Folk Radio (not sure of the exact name). He said (to paraphrase) "this year they were chosen by committee...I wasn't particularly involved"

Getting back on thread here any ideas as to who may headline the Friday night?

We can assume it won't be RT but as Jerry D is now playing with the Yardbirds doesanyone think they would be a suitable act, either as a headliner or at some stage during the weekend.

I think we may get another one-time chart act for Friday though, someone like Marillion, who should have played cropredy by now, also it looks as if the Proclaimers are having a bit of a resurgence at festivals lately.

I don't think the Yardbirds are a big enough 'sell' to headline, but they are certainly suitable for the R'nB 'Hamsters' slot....

Personally, it'll be an early night for me if either of those get a headline spot. Not keen on the Procs, never have been, and Marillion are well past their best. I also susapect that they're too mainline 'rock' for a Cropredy Headliner.

I would think though that any suggestions / discussions about headline bands here may well be irrelevent, as Thursday isnow signed and sealed it seems likely that contracts are being made for the rest of the weekend as we type.

Still, its fun talking about it anyway.

Well back in the 60's the Yardbirds were big enough to headline & especially with Donnahue at a Fairport Fanatic filled Cropredy of aging Hippies, of course the Yardbirds are big enough.

Oh, I didn't say that they shouldn't be booked, just that they're not my cup of tea.

That's what makes discussing music interesting....everyone's tastes are different! Long may that last!

100% Agree with you Chris, the greater the differences in taste the more chance we have to learn and explore new things!

I think we may get another one-time chart act for Friday though, someone like Marillion, who should have played cropredy by now, also it looks as if the Proclaimers are having a bit of a resurgence at festivals lately.

Personally, it'll be an early night for me if either of those get a headline spot. Not keen on the Procs, never have been, and Marillion are well past their best. I also susapect that they're too mainline 'rock' for a Cropredy Headliner.

Prejudice or experience?

Marillion are not the band that many people remember - and certainly not a one-hit wonder - they charted 2 singles last year (not that that's necessarily anything to shout about these days)

It's amazing how many Marillion T-shirts are around the field in Cropredy - to my ears they are a band that has gone from strength to strength in recent years and, if it weren't for that bl***y Kayleigh song, would be much higher profile than they currently enjoy.

They also have more than enough talent to 'do the Cropredy thing'.  A recent acoustic tour of the States springs to mind -

Make my vote for Los Trios Marilliones for '06

Well back in the 60's the Yardbirds were big enough to headline & especially with Donnahue at a Fairport Fanatic filled Cropredy of aging Hippies, of course the Yardbirds are big enough.

I repeat - Headliners main reason is to sell tickets. The Yardbirds are just not doing that at their own gigs, and I don't see why appearing at Cropredy would sell any more.
Also, I've seen then live. OK, Jerry is given the odd riff, but it certainly can be stated that he doesn't feature as the 'main man'.
I suggest you go see them - you may change your mind as to their headlining suitability.

I last saw Marillion around two-ish years ago, I think. I don't know whether they've changed further since.
However, you hit the nail on the head "not the band that many people remember" - so would those coming to see Marillion in the open air be happy with the remaining acts likely to be booked? That answer needs to be a 'yes' in large enough quantities to sell at least 8,000 Friday / Saturday (or all weekend!) tickets, if they were to headline Friday night.
I'm not convinced - and Marillion would need to satisfy the booking committees similar query.

But if you just meant book 'em for a non-headlining slot - yes, definitely - but I fear they'd want too much dosh not to be headline material. Maybe a slimmed down version - do they do that?

Very much so - they were second on the bill at Guilfest this year, sandwiched between Chas and Dave and Lulu - that's versatility for you!

And, yes, they do a stripped down - Marillion lite - version.

(2 years ago would have been the end of the Anorak touring, they were recording the last album and went out to blow off the studio cobwebs - a good tour, but not one of their best.)

Runrig would do a GREAT! Friday headline.  And boy can they headline!  And I'd LOVE to see Capercaillie too.

And too many others to mention.  Lunasa, Shooglenifty, Nickel Creek (although they're ?American ?Canadian and would have to just happen to be the right side of the water), Any outfit with Mike McGoldrick, Kate Rusby, Kate Purcell, John Tams....  Isambarde for a long-shot Friday opener?  Where are Altan at these days?

Apart from "that bl**dy Kayleigh song" (agree with the sentiment there) I know very little about Marillion.  Weren't they a kind of goth band at one point? So I shan't comment on their suitability or otherwise for Croppers - they alone wouldn't inspire me to buy a ticket though.

That's my tuppence-ha'penny worth...

Altan are amazing in their genre...  I'll never forget seeing them in the Olympia in Dublin.. the gig didn't start til after midnight.. there were pints of Guinness being passed over evryone's heads all night everywhere.. it went on til about 3am...  it was shortly before Franlie Kennedy died.. he came on stage and played for a while.. fantastic..an altogether fantastic night...  saw them later on a very rainy night in Newark three years ago.. would LOVE to see them again....

Hey, Jackdaw - see what you started!

No, Marillion were never 'goth', nor were they ever a scottish heavy metal band.

With regard to 'pulling power', this forum has 1400 members, the equivalent one for the 'M' band has 6000...

I shall say no more least I be accused of attempted brainwashing... ;D

So Jerry isn't really with them then...? then someone elses post was missleading me.

Headlining acts for me would be Jethro Tull, Steeleye Span, Tannerhill Weavers, Saxon, Led Zeppelin (well we can dream can't we), the reformed Queen, with Paul Rodgers, Status Quo, etc etc etc.....

Just about to celebrate their 21st Anniversary year! They're appearting at next year's Celtic Connections in Glasgow, more of which I'll post elsewhere soon.

Headlining acts for me would be Jethro Tull, Steeleye Span, Tannerhill Weavers, Saxon, Led Zeppelin (well we can dream can't we), the reformed Queen, with Paul Rodgers, Status Quo, etc etc etc.....

The first two will have met that by next year & third definitely one for the future. The others are too heavy, or too popular (yes, you read that right), or just out of keeping with the spirit of the festival.

No attempt to mislead. Jerry WAS a member but their sites most recent news anounces his recent departure.

As this is in the Fairport board, more ought to be said on this. He joined on March 25 this year and departed sometime in the last month or so. From their website....

"Due to conflicting commitments to outside assignments, The Yardbirds and Jerry Donahue have mutually agreed to a parting of ways. The Yardbirds have been honoured to have Jerry as one of their lead guitar players."

Very true. There have been one or two acts on where people chatting do distract from the enjoyment.

However my answer when I have an artist come on I don't like is to go have a walk around the field, in order not to disturb the people who for some reason do happen to like Anna Ryder... (lord knows why)

+ 1 on that front. Fair enough I can sit quite merrily in a busy pub & blank out evrything (almost) appart from the act on stage, but in cinemas, or in the middle of a field on a sunny August weekend, nearby voices that arn't kept under control are extemely annoying.

Not sure I can get as excited as you lot about wRants playing at Cropredy. Don't get me wrong, fair play to them etc. etc. and I'm sure they'll be well received... but only for what they are. I've said this before in a thread referring to Tiny Tin Lady, they're very talented for being youngsters and I love to see that but this kind of thing is a bit too close to a novelty act for my liking.

I watched most of the wRants set at Banbury Canal Festival and must say I thought they were good for a bunch of kids. I'm sorry though, I don't think they're close to Cropredy material quite yet.

Not seem them yet so can't comment on wRants but there does seem to be a general policy that the opening act is a local band, so I'm just pleased that in 2006 we get a local folk band rather than a pub rock band knocking out cover versions.

Although Jono's point was that he'd seen the band and didn't think they were good enough, that would account for about half the acts that ever appear if you believe some folk. I've seen 'em and on past evidence they're certainly good enough to open the show (IMHO).

I'm absolutely astonished to hear anyone say that a band could be too young or inexperienced to play at Cropredy!!! It seems to me like saying to Wayne Rooney - "Sorry mate, you're too young to play for England!"

And let's not forget that it was an 18-year-old Richard Thompson who wrote Meet on the Ledge. Perhaps Fairport can see in wRants a reflection of that group of teenagers who produced such ground-breaking music between 1968 and 70.

More power to you Ollie and the wRants! Ignore the bitter old b*ggers - they're just jealous!

Well personally I cant understand what all the fuss is about, looks like the worst thursday line up since the festival went three days to me, looks like i will be watching PJ Wright and spending the rest of the night in the Brasenose which will be a first for me since i first attended the festival in 1984.

Lets hope that the Friday night makes up for it and that we dont end up with another night in the pub.

Over the years i have come to think of Fairport Convention as a tradition rather than a band with former members still being very much part of the family, at Cropredy through time the highlights have been the unexpected special guests Robert Plant being the top of this list, and the odd unknown gem such as the Leningrad Cowboys, supplemented  with classic bands like Tull Procul Harum Oysterband etc....all finished off with Fairports saturday spectacular and the anticipation of that special guest... however the definition of special guest has been somewhat diluted over time we seem to have degenerated from the heights of Billy Connolly and Robert Plant through Steve Harley and Mike Read to a school dance team and a trio who busked outside the train station, surely a special guest should be more than this....

Saturday Fairport Convention and Special Guests**

A special guest is anybody who has already appeared this weekend, anybody who has ever appeared in Fairport Convention at anytime, or anyone who has shared a pint with Dave Pegg. Perhaps one year the backing singers for Meet on the Ledge will comprise the very special guests of everyone who has been to all the Cropredy Festivals WOW!!!!!!. Please note that Richard Thompson is the only former member of Fairport who can be considered a special guest.

After 22 years of Cropredy what makes me come back every year, the people, the atmosphere, the crowd I attend with, but as time passes the self indulgent nature of the line up is starting to grate, and the irritating sound of 'All around my Hat' on a balmy summers evening may well be the straw that breaks the camels back.

I have probably rambled as i have compiled this at work on reading the ecstatic response to a boring Thursday night line up, no doubt i will be met by howls of derision, but we all have our views and I will continue to air mine unless i get sectioned by the folk police.

Special guests ...what's yours called.

Not Dave Swarbrick, then?  I think he'd qualify too (actually, I'd put him as a very special guest)

I'm only guessing here but I don't think you like Steeleye Span very much  ;)

But, as you are a newbie (welcome) how about sharing with us who you would rather see supporting Fairport on the Thursday, that way we can get to know you better and call off the folk dogs of war before they descend.

Well personally I cant understand what all the fuss is about, looks like the worst thursday line up since the festival went three days to me, looks like i will be watching PJ Wright and spending the rest of the night in the Brasenose which will be a first for me since i first attended the festival in 1984.

Just goes to show... you can't please everyoone...  but no one will force you to go on Thursday....

Funny the list was there the other day.. wonder where it's gone???

Yes please tell us who you'd like to see.

Hi Soolntr

I have to say I and a number of others that I know will be joining you in the pub.

I have seen Steeleye Span twice in the last 2 years and just cannot get excited about them (or even just casually listen to them). Still, it would be awful if everbody liked the same bands, and I suppose that the chances are that there will be a headliner or two that just do not push your buttons every now and again. At least there is a fall back position.

We will, however, make the effort to see the WRants who I have now seen several times and whom I do think warrant support.

Lets wait and see what Friday and Saturday have to offer :)

I have just checked and I'll be on holiday the week after, so I am going to make it to Cropredy after 27 years of living in Banbury!

Steeleye must be getting pretty bored by now with All Around My Hat jibes, like judging Fairport on Si Tu Dois Partir or Ralph on Streets of London.

I have really liked what I've heard of the newer stuff and Ken Nicol is a top guitarist.

Bring it on I say, plus the Croppers crowd all singing AAMH should be worth a laugh at least.

I can relate to that as we only lasted four songs of the Country Joe set before deciding to go for a walk down to the village.  :(

Looking forward to seeing SS myself, though I do tend to prefer Maddy Prior in one of her other incarnations these days - MP and the Girls were excellent when we saw them last week, perhaps they should be on at Cropredy instead.

Hi all,

I'd also like to add that SS in their present incarnation are VERY good indeed. Check out the recent Live DVD for proof! Best of all they are still doing trad. arr material featuring solid electric guitar riffs courtesy of Ken Nicol. There's also a fab drum solo... check it out.

I agree.  In my opinion the current Steeleye and it's material can blow the current Fairport and it's material off stage without breaking a sweat.  Perhaps that's why they are playing Thursday  ;)  But it's all a matter of personal preference.  Over the years Fairport has been a far more consistent band than Steeleye.

However, judging a band's 36 year career on the basis of one song is pathetic.

Perhaps this should be another thread but i think the main problem with Cropredy festival when compared to other Festivals is the lack of any alternative. The Wrants may well be talented but other festivals would surely give them the opportunity to play on smaller stage rather than going straight to the main stage with X thousand people, also many of the acts booked over the years do not work on the bigger stage unless you are right at the front or are looking for some back ground noise. I know there are other musical options available in the village but there only so many versions of Wishing Well you can take!

Perhaps the boys should consider another stage in a marquee down by the river where new bands such as Tin Tin Lady can do a full set, lets face it much smaller festivals have three or four stages available, in my opinion this would add greatly to the appeal of Cropredy and would also provide a much needed refuge from Richard Digance.

What the chance of a second stage???

Next to zero, I would think.

It's working well at the moment - and to put a marquee where you suggest will take money to hire & erect, staff (more money) and prime camping land (even more money - to hire more campsite as it gets full now)

And as has been said already if you don't like what is on the main stage head into the village for an alternative.

As to the Wrants they have now played Cornbury and Banbury festivals with good notices so I'm sure the Thursday afternoon crowd at Cropredy won't be too much for them.

I really enjoy the Wallingford Bunkfest, but one thing I don't find so good about it is the fact that often good bands, that I want to listen to, will clash. Last year I had to mis Chumbawamba to see Arlen for instance.

I like the Cropredy arrangement where you only have to stay in one place to see all the good acts.

There's a great review of the album in the new Mojo & there was a cracker in the Telegraph as well as several regionals.

There seems to be a suggestion that the W-Rants do not deserve to be given a spot in from of x thousand fans - b*ll*cks !

I am sure that Fairport would not have given the billing to the W-Rants if they had not considerd them to be 'up to the job'.

Steeleye Span in my opinion are just as important & influential in British Folk Rock as any band on the curcuit today.

My dream lineup for any year would always include Fairport Steeleye & Jethro tull. Infact I would have the main act for each night as one of the above. & make up the space with other bands.

Although the lineup in any one year is never going to suit everybody I love Cropredy just as it is. I really like the way the lineup changes from year to year and I can't help feeling Richard Digance needs a couple of years rest.

The thought of additional stages/big screens/Steeleye and Tull headlining every year would probably mean i wouldn't attend regularly any more. I've been just about every year since 1989 beacause it's wonderful how it is.

I did not suggest that they were 'unimportant', nor that they were not 'influential' (and I think at my age I can say I had the luxury of seeing all of these bands at every stage of their careers so saw influence in the making). I merely stated that I, personally, do not like them in their current mode, but there again I have never been a big fan.

The point I was making was that there can never be a line up that everybody is perfectly happy with, but that that is not a reason (for me at least) not to go to Cropredy.

However, if SS (or anyone else apart from Fairport) appeared every year then I CAN see a situation where I would no longer attend, and I guess many others might feel the same.

Also, I would dispute your contention that Fairport is the reason that everybody attends the festival. I know of people who know nothing of Fairport, or who are not really fans of theirs, who go. People attend fro many different reasons.

Cropredy works as it is. It does not need changing or fixing. A changing line up every year, with some old favourites (or not as the case may be) mixed with some new talent and a few (usually nice) surprises is just fine.

I was not sugesting changing of fixing anything. However saying that Cropredy should not simply have a band because that band was there the year before is ludicrous. The thing is for me Although I still enjoy Fairport & will continue to attend cropredy I no longer see them as a pure folk band that they were at their zenith. Your Point about Steeleye span is also valid. I must admit I prefered musch of their earlier work, though I must say they even today seem to stay truer to the folk feel I've come to know & love.

My only problem with the even is now that the prices are escalating ever higher, I do have to think ever harder each year I come. to the extent that I often have to make it a last minute thing, by doing overtime at work & therefore pay over the odds on the gate. This year was the first year I really couldn't afford the event at all. I only hope I can save up enough in the interim to come in 2006

For myself & many other who have been attending the even as long as I have the initial reason has always been Fairport. hence my opinion & continued opinion that a Folk even such as this is too important not to have the likes of Steeleye Span. Or is Cropredy to join the fate of many other outdoor events & to become simply a mere pop festival like so many others have become. I do hope not, as if it does, then for me it will be truely broken.

Title: Re: Cropredy 06 bands announced

Ah. The perennial debate. Is it a folk event?

Fairport have often said that Cropredy is a music festival, not a folk festival.

There have been many arguments in the past as to what constituted both. There will undoubtedly be many more.

However, I do not think that Cropredy would ever sink to being a 'pop' festival.

It is unique, as are the attendees, and I hope it will stay that way. Vive le difference.

I hope that you do manage to get there this year. I am sure we will both enjoy it in our own ways.

Sandra.

Sorry, I don't agree....even with the best bands, the secret of a good festival is the mix & match. There are plenty of good bands out there that you could programme the likes of Cropredy for at least 5 years without the need to repeat anybody (other than FC, of course)
I suspect that Digance is due for a rest unles he's willing to write some new material....

hence my opinion & continued opinion that a Folk event such as this

Ehhh? Cropredy hasn't been a 'folk' event for at least 10 years, and probably longer than that. As has been evidenced by various members of the band saying so over the years....

it isn't going to be 1974 forever.

No, it's not a folk music festival. It's a music festival with some folk music. That's fine. In fact it's great. The sheer variety is what keeps me coming back (5 years now).

I've seen ghosts from my youth (Procol Harum, Jethro Tull) new and exciting bands (Muffin Men, Debora Bonham) and breathtaking talent (Eddie Reader, Richard Thompson)

I've seen totally unexpected stuff like the Hamsters playing Purple Haze (definitely NOT folk music).

I have also been introduced to folk music in a form I don't recognise from my early memories of it (Si Tu Dois Partir etc.). Bands like Uiscedwr, Show of Hands and, of course, FC.

Of course with such variety there will always be bands that don't appeal to everyone. For times like that there is the bar, the food stalls, the clothing stalls, the pubs in the villiage...

It's great as it is. Long may it continue.  ;D

and amen and halleluya(sic?) to that..
i'm going to keep turning up, year in year out, knowing that there will always be the better proportion of the weekend dedicated to less than the mainstream, whether it be folk, blues, gospel, jazz, i dunno, welsh voice choir, the point is, there will be no robbie williams!
and that, for me, is the point, i don't expect to be perfectly sated all day every day, but i know i will not be forced to leave by my ears and my eyes for the sake of my fragile sanity.
respite from the concrete i live in, that's all i ask, and all i expect.
thankyou crop for showing me another side(s).

When they're confirmed?....

Is that the same but different as 'subject to contract' which is what Thursday's line up is announced as?

My money's on Show of Hands simply for the reason that Phil Beer's thereon Thursday...er... and another band which has Dave Mattacks on drums...and erm.. Richard Digance. Duhr.

Not quite. 'confirmed' means that bands haven't even verbally agreed; STC means they've verbally agreed, just haven't signed up....

Quote

Doubt the first; too soon since they were there. Which other band do you percieve DM being part of - or are you referring to appearing as a 'special guest'?; yes, I reckon RD might be a good bet.

Title: Re: Cropredy 06 bands announced
Post by: PaulT on November 14, 2005, 05:17:01 PM
I reckon he means Feast of Fiddles.

How can someone be "confirmed" when they haven't even verbally agreed? Surely STC first, then confimed AFTER they've signed...?

While we're talking about comperes/comedians, how about giving Jasper Carrott (the Solihull/Acocks Green connection) or Frank Skinner (with or without fiddle) a 30-min slot?

Title: Re: Cropredy 06 bands announced
Post by: Chris on November 14, 2005, 05:36:58 PM
I reckon he means Feast of Fiddles.

Not sure of that - Feast of Fiddles are already listed for Thursday.....

Quote

They can't - hence there's no announcement yet.

Quote

I see what you mean, maybe bad usage....what I meant was verbally agreed, what you mean is the 'legal-eagle' definition. Verbal agreement 9 times out of 10 will sign up...hence the codacil 'STC'....Of course they are contractually confirmed once their signature is on the line.

But if artists maybe have been asked but not yet even said a verbal 'yes', then there's little point in advertising them - which I reckon is the current situation.

Re Dm. I thought he might be on drums over the weekend for a 'special' - and I don't mean FC.

I'd still put some money on Show of Hands.

My dream lineup for any year would always include Fairport Steeleye & Jethro tull. Infact I would have the main act for each night as one of the above.

I was not sugesting changing or fixing anything.

Sorry, Taliesin, yes - you were.....

Quote
However saying that Cropredy should not simply have a band because that band was there the year before is ludicrous.

Quote
hence my opinion & continued opinion that a Folk event such as this

Ehhh? Cropredy hasn't been a 'folk' event for at least 10 years, and probably longer than that. As has been evidenced by various members of the band saying so over the years....
Yeah, Ok, yes I'd love to have it how I like it, though I know that'd never happen, hence why I'm saying I'm not suggesting fixing it, I was saying that how I'd have it if I had my way, though as I say I kno0w that'll never happen.

Digence is one of these odd acts, he's one of those guys that on one hand I initially wouldn't be bothered about, but when he gets up there I find myself riveted & find myself not going around the stalls & also hanging onto the contents of my bladder till the end of the set, something which is a real compliment for any act up there.

And yes I suppose Cropredy hasn't been a Folk event for some years, however for me I'll always see it as a Folk event, combined with Rock music, & anny dumbing down of the event would be very sad. Not everything has been of my taste of recent years its true, even some of the supposedly folk bands, but I've nearly always looked forward to certain headline bands, though was really disapointed by one of the supposedly Folk ones (which I wont name, as I know some people actually like them)

There was a "gongfest" thingy quite recently in Glastonbury (where else?) - lineup included Gilli Smyth, Tim Blake, Steve Hillage, Miquette Giraudy, Mike Howlett, Didier Malherbe, not sure who the drummer was; no Daevid Allen apparently.  Some pix on the gong-gas website.  Certain gongers looking a little worn these days, but Hillage looks younger...

Back on topic - not Hawkwind, please.

The Ukulele Orchestra Of Great Britain has performed an, at least, very interesting version of Silver Machine at Cropredy 2005. It's time to compare it to the original, or, let's say, to how the original members of Hawkwind would play it nowadays.

I would guess you would have to beg the Levellers themselves.

They have been rumoured on the line-up many times now. Peggy even got as far as listing them as TBC on a mailing one year.

Trouble is, they have their own festival the week after Cropredy. It would diminish their own event if they played another festival too close to their own. For the same reason that Fairport don't play Sidmouth or Cambridge (except in emergencies) the Levellers are unlikely to play Cropredy.

But that is supposition and of course anything is possible.

Cheers

Nick

I have started a new topic http://www.talkawhile.co.uk/yabbse/index.php?topic=14146.0 (http://www.talkawhile.co.uk/yabbse/index.php?topic=14146.0) for general Cropredy chit chat.
There is also a new topic just for information on Cropredy 2006.
