Title: Simon's Cornflake Packet
Post by: PLW (Peter) on October 29, 2005, 06:27:14 PM
Looking at some old Cropredy photos i took in the 80s, I sudeenly remembered Simon's Corn Flake Packet guitar. He played it with both Fairport and the Albions. Whatever happened to it?

Here it is. I think Simon wrote in one of the Crop programmes that it needs mending

He played it during RT's Big Band Tour in '83 as well.  ;D

I recall him playing it at one or two "unofficial" fairport gigs in Masham Town Hall in the early 80's. There also used to be a fine photo of him playing it on the wall in the White Bear. Not sure where the photo was taken, or if it's still there.

We missed out on the really early days and first went to see the band in the Simon, Swarb, Peggy, Bruce Rowland lineup. He was playing it then around 1979-80 ish.

I seem to remember some talk of another one being planned, but can't remember the details.

Would be interested to know if it was comfy... those sharp edges!

Simon once told me that he still had the Cornflake packet..  kept it on top of his wardrobe...  but he may have been joking.. and it WAS years ago...

True, it's still in the wardrobe and will probably stay there as it's really not that great a guitar to start with and not at all the style of guitar that suits the music we're playing right now. But as I always said when quizzed about it back then, it does have a very low cereal number and a very crisp sound.......

Must be nice to strum it along to Breakfast In Mayfair.

Was it aplyed about the same era that Peggy had his Banana bass, were the band going through an odd foodie phase?

Was that not a Cornflakes mug, that Simon had his "water"(?) in at Chipping Norton on Saturday?

Clearly a corporate theme developing over 20+ years.

Beware the Kelloggs Cropredy Convention  :-\

*Columbus* Les Paul Hardware. ye gods, I remember those.  A Columbus 335 Copy was the worst guitar I've ever owned by a country mile. Was it the original neck or a better one?

You're spot on Jimc. Rob Armstrong just cut the body off (or did he cut everything off the body?) and built a plywood box that JUST fitted inside a cornflakes paket and screwed everything onto that. Simple, eh? Was a rubbish guitar though but the great thing about playing guitar in the same space-time continuum as RT is that no-one is listening to you...... (Not even me)

Happy Christmas everyone BTW

I still have a Columbus Les Paul in the loft. And that's where it's staying.

Oh my GAAARD!

You couldn't do something with our Technics digital piano could you Olly? We've always thought it's a bit black and boring in the corner of the living room. An All-Bran theme would be nice.
