Title: The most influential Folk album - ever
Post by: pauled on November 25, 2005, 11:07:15 AM
As you may know this is a category in the BBC Radio 2 Folk awards.

Liege and Lief is currently riding high in the voting apparently.

Thought that some of you might agree with me that the album is well worth this title.

Voting continues to end of Dec at :- http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/r2music/folk/folkawards2006/vote.shtml

Voting also enters you into a draw for two tickets to the awards show with overnight accomodation in London

Another spanner in the works, I'm afraid.  I voted for 'Unhalfbricking'.

'Liege & Lief' is often quoted as the 'seminal' English folk-rock album; but without the 'psychedelic folk' experiments of  'Nottamun Town' and 'She Moves Through the Fair' on 'What We Did On Our Holidays' and the epochal 'A Sailor's Life'(with Swarbrick) on 'Unhalfbricking', there would have been no 'L&L'.

I love those first 3 albums and far prefer the 'psychedelic' folk approach than the traditional arrangements rocked up we got afterwards - good as they are. They didn't really come back to that sound until Trev and Jerry joined up for 'Rosie' - which may be why the Lucas-Donahue(-Denny) line-up is my second favourite Fairport era.

On Mike Harding's programme on Wednesday night he said the 4 leaders were L&L, Penguin Eggs (Nic Jones), Pleased to See the King (Steeleye Span), and a Dick Gaugan record.

I would love for Fairport to win this one.  Therefore, I recommend voting for L&L - simply to improve the band's chances.  If we, instead, pick our personal favorites, it won't help them much.

Politics!  Politics!

Just a thought but it seems that the nominatioins are for the albums that 'folkies' think are the most influential to 'folkies'

How about the album which did most to influence 'general' music listeners to broaden their horizons to folk music ?

Obviously, there is no way of determining which this might be but it might raise a few interesting thoughts.

How about Bob Dylans' Highway 61 Revisited, maybe Whales & Nightingales by Judy Collins (your Mum and Dad may have bought it for Amazing Grace but there were some other very good songs on album), maybe Simon & Garfunkel ? There are loads more... could these be considered the most influential folk album.

I guess it's the difference between preaching to the converted or winning hearts and minds ?

maybe Simon & Garfunkel ? There are loads more...

That's what did it for me, followed shortly thereafter by the Waterboys and then being dragged to my first Cropredy, which made a nice change from the likes of Deep Purple and ELP  :)

S&G's Concert in Central Park *is* the album that got me into folk...

The album /band that influenced me most ,and got me" INTO " folk was ------LED ZEPPELIN 4 . With  the  Battle of Evermore and Stairway  to Heaven  . I wanted more of the same so I bought L&L because of Sandy Denny `s  wonderful  singing on B of E . That/those LP /lp`s blew me away . Since then I`ve been hooked on FC and folk rock .
The main question is-- where did it start for me? Is the answer  L Z 4  or L & L ? . LZ or FC?
I really dont know the  answer  to that  .  ??? [;-)

For me, it was The Byrds - particularly their 5TH DIMENSION album.  Their versions of Wild Mountain Tyme and John Riley really opened my eyes and ears to the folk ballad songs.  Once I heard these arrangements, I never turned back!

Certainly, The Byrds primed me for the delight of discovering Fairport some years later. :)

The most influential folk album for me had to be All Around my Hat.  I bought from Sunshine Records in Oxford.  I bought it after I heard Steeleye on  Pick of the Pops  or whatever it was called  in 1976 .  I fell in love with Maddy's vocals.  The rest is history, Gamble Gold, The Wife of Ushers Well etc etc  .

It's often said that The Band's Big Pink inspired FC to embark on their English Folk Song route. So in a sense Music From Big Pink could be the most influential folk album.

The Dick Gaughan album would be "Handful of Earth" which was voted album of the decade in the '80s. Fabulous album. I heard it played at a Rory McLeod gig 2 weeks ago.
Fairport may yet loose out on a split vote for any of the 3 seminal albums in the period. I'll have to go with L&L as it is the complete package and launched a style of music from which, in Joe Boyd's words so much good, bad and indifferent followed! Also, its nice to see the Fairports winning something!

Undeniable, as it is a personal preference, but totally irrelevant.

The vote is for "most influential". Ask any Jo Schmo off the street to name a Fairport album and if he is capable of naming one it will more than likely be L&L. It may not be the most influential folk album of all time, but it is unquestionably Fairport's.

Personally, I go for one of his Bobness' oeuvre - probably Highway 61.....

being a bit younger at the time, i'll join in again and say the levellers did the same for me, not all that folky, less so subsequently, but without them i would probably have never started going to festivals at all, and so would possibly still be a grungy shoegazer, in my room with my bloody valentine and a stack of freak brothers comics.

Looks like Liege and Lief has got it.

According to DM's website he is coming over for the Folk Awards to play with SN, Ashley, Swarb and RT.  We assume that L&L has won the Most Influential Album.

Tickets are by invitation only.  And what's more the bloody show isn't being televised - only being featured on Harding's radio 2 slot.

Photos, Chris?

Title: Re: The most influential Folk album - ever - 3 Questions
Post by: Keith E Rice on January 07, 2006, 07:40:33 AM
Question #1: Can some kind soul provide an e-mail addy to pester the Beeb with, please. (Far too lazy to get it for myself!)

Question #2: But a thought...

Obviously, getting the 'L&L' line-up back together for a televised gig beyond Cropredy is a WONDERFUL idea.

But what chance of making this something other than an exercise of acknowledgement-to-nostalgia?

In other words, using it to give some profile to today's Fairport, Richard's body of work as a solo artist, Ashley's post-Fairport adventures, DM being one of the most sought-after session drummers in the world, etc?

I'm sure there are cleverer heads than mine to think about how to exploit this (to everyone's benefit)...so get to work please.

Question #3: what about the Sandy voice? Richard, (pre-illness) Swarb and Simon all turned out to be capable singers - Swarb being the best at larynx exercises. But 'L&L' was fronted  by one of the most distinctive female voices ever

Looks as though the Liege & Lief-era FC are to be joined by Sandy's daughter, Georgia....

This was posted to an email list by John Penhallow....

For those of you that haven't heard on the grapevine there will be a special award
presented to the L&L lineup and a live performance with Swarb, DM and Chris While
stepping into Sandy's Shoes as they play Matty Groves for the audience and the
Wednesday's broadcast of Folk on 2.

Kit Bailey, Mike Harding's Producer wrote to me in January and said:
"Fairport Convention's Liege & Lief have won the public vote for Most
Influential Folk Album of All Time and we have got together the original L&L
line-up. They will perform Matty Groves on the night and accept an Award.

I'd like to sound you out as to whether you think Georgia would like to come
over for the event? Simon said you would be the best person to ask if you
thought it would be something she could/would do.

The Awards are at The Brewery in London on Feb 6th."

So I put her in touch with Liz who's in London at the moment, and she contacted Georgia -
arrangements were made to look after the twins and Georgia arrived in London yesterday
for a 2 week visit and will be with the band to accept the award on Sandy's behalf
tomorrow. Chris While will be singing for Sandy which is a wonderful choice - I know she'll
give it her best.

Not there, folks - sorry. First year that I've not been.... :'( :'(

But the chaps ask me to post this.....

At about 11pm tonight (Monday), Fairport hopes to be able
to post a brief report from the annual BBC Radio 2 Folk
Awards on the website at:

http://www.fairportconvention.com/news.htm (http://www.fairportconvention.com/news.htm)

But it depends entirely on them getting access to the
internet from the Awards venue. Worth a look anyway.

And it's defintely not on BBC4.

Firstly I would recommend the link suggested by Chris to Fairport site to read about last night's Awards Show.

Secondly , thanks to pauled  for the reminder to vote in the Awards as I was lucky enough to win the trip to The Brewery to see the Show.

Listen to the show on R2 on Wed 8th and you will not be disappointed.

The L&L lineup were great with special honours to Chris While & the amazing playing from Dave Swarbrick...Lazarus indeed as he gained cheers & applause in both numbers.

The whole band past & present went down a storm.

On the Folk Awards website there is going to be a photo gallery & possible live clips.

A BBC2 Newsnight crew were following Richard Thompson for a  probable Thursday night report.

Nigel Schofield & Neil Wayne introduced us (me 'n' ms.jamesiegang) to Chris Leslie at the end of 'Meet On The Ledge' which was a fantastic bonus.

Again the whole show (7-9 pm) with Mike Harding will be a good listen.
