Title: Winter Tour - who's going where? Post by: PaulT on January 27, 2006, 04:08:46 PM Looks like it'll be Oxford for me (can't get to Tewkesbury this year). Anyone else on here going to that one and fancy meeting up earlier in the day?
and who else is going to which show(s)? Title: Re: Winter Tour - who's going where? Post by: Anna on January 27, 2006, 04:14:30 PM Ooh, are we running a book? Talkawhile Meets Across The Country...
Put me down for The Stables, Milton Keynes. Most of the tour clashes with my holiday in Scotland this year, so unless the chaps suddenly decide to make a detour to the Highlands in the middle of the tour, that'll be the only one I get to this time around. Thinks... Just gonna try something... Title: Re: Winter Tour - who's going where? A meet up sounds good. There are plenty of pubs near the theatre but I would recommend the Far From The Madding Crowd, which is just round the corner. Any thoughts on time? Wish it wasn't all seated - makes for a slightly formal evening (and you can't take beer in). RT mentioned this last week and said what fun it was to make old people stand for two and a half hours! ;D The Anvil is very flexible and can be set up to have standing and seating - but not this Friday methinks... Anyone else going there for us to meet .? I'd suggest the "Eagle" pub, just across the road from Kings College and 5 minutes walk from the Corn Exchange. Very historic and atmospheric pub. Good beer. Very touristy in the afternoon, but full of students and academics, mulling over dissertations, etc. in the evening. Lots of historical connections with various important research work, as well as US airforce connections from WW2. Interesting nooks and crannies. I may be there, as although resident in Norwich ,work halfway between Norwich and Cambridge, so may nip down that evening. Title: Re: Winter Tour - who's going where? I've been horribly excessive and seen the show three times already. However, I'm not seeing Fairport again until 5 March and I really don't think I can last that long. I am now tempted by Northampton (or would be if I knew how to get there and whether I can afford a ticket and if there are any tickets left and how annoyed people will be if I go again and so on and so on...) *exits selfish mode* Title: Re: Winter Tour - who's going where? Title: Re: Winter Tour - who's going where? Post by: peterryb on February 13, 2006, 10:10:46 PM *selfish mode* Suzanne, I went to Northampton couple of weeks ago to see Richard Thompson; briefly met Nuthouse at the venue itself. The Deco Theatre is a small, atmospheric and fairly intimate place- with a nice bar area-order any interval drinks before hand or you have to wait ages-great for people like RT and FC. Good views of stage, at least there was from where I sat. Also followed Nuthouse's recommendation and had a pre-gig pint or two in the Malt Shovel pub, which was great - great friendly atmosphere, good beer, although the Heineken brewery across the road, while an easy landmark, does make it feel like a not too nice partof town, all industrial, etc. The venue is a 15 minute or so walk from there, but make sure you have good directions if you don't know the town. Know what you mean about "people getting annoyed". If I ever get divorced, I think Fairport might be cited in the petition! Northampton seems to have good road links from most places in the country especially Oxfordshire way, and safe parking in the multi-stories in the town centre was cheap, as long as you were there after 5.00pm. I think it was fairly cheap before that time as well.Get your ticket now, as the Folk Britannia/Radio 2 Awards seem to be attracting a lot of interest in the band from the younger Fairport and Cropredy "virgins." All-in-all, yes, just go-you only live once!I've been horribly excessive and seen the show three times already. I've finally got my dear wife Jane to come with me this year - perhaps she thinks she's missing something and wants a 'peek' into what draws me to a muddy field in Oxfordshire each August! ;D Just booked my ticket for Worthing. Anyone else? Title: Re: Winter Tour - who's going where? Post by: Bluebottle on February 26, 2006, 09:46:29 PM I've managed to persuade my parents to get tickets for Worthing (Can't go myself) They've been toying with the idea for a while but Mum was worried about not fitting in, being too old, that sort of thing! So, if you see a couple of people who don't fit in with the crowd and look too old..... ;)
Title: Re: Winter Tour - who's going where? Post by: tarda (Gill) on February 26, 2006, 09:55:15 PM Too old!!!! you're never too old!!!
At Cropredy in 2004 we were sitting near a chap on his own who must have been well into his 70's and he seemed to fit perfectly. I'll be at Worthing. Tell your Mum to wave at the fat woman in the front row. If it's me I'll wave back! Title: Re: Winter Tour - who's going where? I suggest that we all meet in the Far From The Madding Crowd which is just around the corner from the Playhouse. Modern pub but with a good range of real ales and wines. One of my 'locals'. (map at http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?client=public&X=451000&Y=206500&width=500&height=300&gride=451140&gridn=206443&srec=0&coordsys=gb&db=pc&addr1=&addr2=&addr3=&pc=OX12BY&advanced=&local=&localinfosel=&kw=&inmap=&table=&ovtype=&keepicon=true&zm=1&scale=5000). Alternatively we could make for the bar in the Randolph Hotel (take out your mortgage now), or one of the student pubs. What do you think? Sandra Title: Re: Winter Tour - who's going where? They look like they're heading to see an All About Eve gig. In which case, they may well be at Cropredy...! Title: Re: Winter Tour - who's going where? Post by: Suzanne on February 27, 2006, 09:15:44 PM Either of those venues suits me Sandy. Some of those student pubs in St Giles are too small and horrible.
Title: Re: Winter Tour - who's going where? Post by: Sandra on February 27, 2006, 09:24:30 PM Careful. I used to run one of those pubs ;D ;D ;D
Sandra Title: Re: Winter Tour - who's going where? Post by: Suzanne on February 27, 2006, 09:31:06 PM I didn't mean in the days when *you* ran them Sandra. ;D (Am I back-pedalling fast enough?
If there's a meet, then it needs to be somewhere that is big-enough to accommodate us but isn't far too noisy so that people can't chat. My comments were based on the fact that some of those pubs in St Giles are really small and loud; some of them are also damn hard to find (it's been a long time since I ventured into an Oxford pub). Title: Re: Winter Tour - who's going where? Post by: martin driver on February 27, 2006, 09:35:18 PM Far from the Madding Crowd sounds good to me Sandy

Post by: Sandra on February 28, 2006, 10:05:22 AM I did consider the Bird and Baby but it is a lot less convenient for those not coming from the north, it is difficult to get a group table as it is really just a corridor until you get to the conservatory and, most importantly, it now very much concentrates on its food trade and this has completely changed the atmosphere (and is why we stopped using it as our local).
We could try the Lamb and Flag, but this too is less convenient for those not coming form the north; the Kings Arms, but that will probably be heaving with students; the Turf, where we could sit outside roasting nuts in the braziers, but would anyone find it without radar; any of the drinking emporiums in George Street or the Parrot in Gloucester Green, but bring your own knuckle dusters and a taste for very cold lager; the Old School House, but only if you are accompanied by an under 16 year old, or the Gloucester Arms, but you must practice your headbanging first. ;D ;D ;D The alternative is all round to mine for a cup of tea :o That is why I plumped for the FFTMC, but I am happy to go elsewhere if that is the concensus. What do you think? Sandra Title: Re: Winter Tour - who's going where? Post by: martin driver on February 28, 2006, 10:51:11 AM Now I'm completely befuddled, why do peeps have to complicate matters. Sandy, your first suggestion of FFTMC sounds fine to me, I'm happy to rely on your local knowledge of all things Oxford. FFTMC is fairly adjacent to the Playhouse theatre and according to (multi map) there is also a car park just around the corner.
Title: Re: Winter Tour - who's going where? Post by: Malcolm on February 28, 2006, 11:04:12 AM Pardon my intrusion, as I am not going to Oxford, but in view of the connection between FC and the film of FFTMC, you should go with the vibes, people. :)

Indeed it is and there is - but a word of warning....doesn't it shut at around 11pm?....OK if you're legging it straight aftyer the gig, but not if you're going to hang about afterwards. Sandra may correct me, but I'm sure that is / was the case. FFTMC will do me.... Title: Re: Winter Tour - who's going where? Post by: Sandra on February 28, 2006, 10:24:21 PM It does indeed close at 10.30pm, as do most of the pubs in Oxford on a Sunday.
The Playhouse bar stays open until 11.00pm though. If there is any interest I will try to find one that stays open later for the stay behinds. OR Are you talking about the car park? That does close about 11.00pm, if not before. Personally I would park in St Giles, as near to Beaumont Street as possible. Sandra Title: Re: Winter Tour - who's going where? Personally I would park in St Giles, as near to Beaumont Street as possible. I was referring to the car park. However, you should find that omn-street parking in Oxford is free after 6.30ish, so Sandra's suggestion is a good one. Title: Re: Winter Tour - who's going where? Post by: vikki rose on March 01, 2006, 01:16:13 PM Hello Lovely Oxfordites
I shall yet again be invading this weekend for Fairport. Are we definatly meeting in FFTMC as I'm internet-less as the weekends and might not be aware of a last minuite change of plan. Vikki xx Title: Re: Winter Tour - who's going where? Post by: David W on March 01, 2006, 01:24:22 PM Go on you lot in Oxford, be brave and trot along to the Gloucester Arms, just make sure to take your ear plugs as Oxford's very own biker pub does tend to also have a really loud juke box. Good beer though.

Post by: Amethyst (Jenny) on March 01, 2006, 03:05:14 PM It's a bright, clear day here and from the back bedroom I can look out and see the church spire in Newark, about 15 miles away... it's reassuring and comfortable to know that the chaps will be arriving there shortly to prepare for this evening's gig...
... can't wait ;D ;D Title: Re: Winter Tour - who's going where? Post by: Mix (Mic) on March 03, 2006, 11:04:11 AM Is anyone else going to Cannock tonight?

I'm not going to the gig :( but I'm working on Sunday :( so I can slide into town afterwards and meet you for a swift half when I finish.
What time will you be there from? I don't mind hanging around in virtual pubs on my own, but real ones are a different matter. Carolyn. Title: Re: Winter Tour - who's going where? Post by: Sandra on March 03, 2006, 02:51:20 PM From about 6.00pm.

Maybe see you in Biddulph then. Sadly, I look just like my photo. I don't think I'll wear a Fez. I'll save that for Sunday. How are you travelling to Oxford? I'm collecting Mic from Keele, and so could possibly offer a lift. Title: Re: Winter Tour - who's going where? Post by: Nick Reg on March 04, 2006, 08:56:03 AM Thanks for your kind offer Adrian, however my comments referred to the Cannock gig not Oxford. Look forward to seeing you at Biddulph though. Don't worry about the photo I look just like mine as well! If I don't then Eric or Craig will point you in the right direction.
Cannock was excellent, apart from the drunk near the front. Loved the new arrangements particularly Tam Lin, and Matty back to the old format. I also like the addition of a bit more electric guitar. One thing about Fairport is that they never disappoint, you are only ever arguing about a few percentage points! Title: Re: Winter Tour - who's going where? I never realised they were so tough.
It was, as expected, another great night (but don't mention the A34). Many familiar faces, but awefully hard to meet people / move. Quite a tiny foyer. Though the slaves of Nic O'tine met up as usual. |
