Title: Cropredy Headline Friday
Post by: YaBB Master (Colin) on March 20, 2006, 09:45:47 AM
It's all to late to be of any influence, but who would you like to see headline on Friday night at Cropredy this year?
The last act on isn't always really the headliner, as they normally finish with something lively, that a field awash with 6X will appreciate.

So John Martyn is likely to be the most famous turn, but what would you like to see the day finish with?

I'd suggest Bellowhead

Morris on Band in that case - send everyone back dancing,

or get Osibisa back for the same reason.

Even, and I know the tribute band debate rages here but either the Bootleg Beatls or the Counterfeit Stones, but maybe too much with the Quo tribute as well.

I too would like to see that (no surprise there then ;)).

However, they are playing at the Belladrum “Tartan Heart 2006” Festival near Inverness on the Saturday, so the journey might be a bridge or three too far.

Other than Bellowhead I would like to see the Levellers, but perhaps we should not open that can of worms again. :o :o

I've been saying Bellowhead to play Cropredy since their very first gig, though this year the logicstics couldn't work. (Mind you, last year Spiers & Boden played twice at Beautiful Days in Devon, with Bellowhead on the Friday and with Eliza and the Ratcatchers on the Sunday and they managed to squeeze in another gig on the Saturday in Glasgow!  :o )

In the absense of Bellowhead, Peatbog Faeries would go down a storm.

Cheers

The Family Mahone, or Flogging Molly.

Both would have much the same effect.

Why don't we ask Eliza if she's up for it? I would love to see Bellowhead or the levellers would be brilliant, I have missed them by a whisker so many times. Do we reckon Bellowhead are a real possibility?

Family Mahone were on last year, and were very good.  Even Justin (who isn't musical at all and just goes for the beer) enjoyed them :)

I'd go for Levellers, Nickel Creek or Hayseed Dixie, all three provide good stompalong stuff!

Waterboys?  They still going?
Runrig!!!

Wouldn't it be great if, one year, Levellers and FC did a reciprocal appearing-at-each-others'-festivals kinda thing?  Or maybe not, for the people that go to both anyway...

Or for Something Completely Different, how about Afrocelt Sound System, or even the absolute originals, Ladysmith Black Mambazo?  They've been going nearly as long as FC!

I'm with you there, Anna. Unfortunately, I've just checked Runrig's site and they're doing a tour of Danish festivals that week. LBM are over here on tour at the moment, posh places like the Albert Hall.

Stlil, there's always next year. :)

Wilco

Natalie Merchant

Pretenders

Bright Eyes

One of these would suit just fine

Well, given that headlining Friday is no small pay day, I would think that 600 miles in a day would be no impediment to Bellowhead turning up - I would!

For a normal sized band maybe. For a band their size it's a little more tricky. You know what it's like with busloads of old ladies at service stations - a nightmare! - well brass players are no different apparently  :o

Spare a thought for poor Squeezy too, if he ends up being the driver again.

How about Iron Maiden since Bruce D is such a big folk fan. Would be great fun!

Other lively suggestions:

Oi Va Voi - a chance to show off the new lineup
Tinariwen - folk rock from desert!
Le Vent Du Nord - lively French Canadian sounds

And I'd second that too. He and his band were one of the best gigs I have seen at a local university couple of years back- at the time of his "Dreamland" album. One of those old rock superstars who obviously still enjoys touring smaller venues, and doesn't seem too bothered about the money, (mind you, he will have plenty of that already). Can't imagine Mick Jagger wanting to do a tour of local colleges and small theatres. He is also known to be an old friend of Peggy's and the rest of FC, is a frequent if sometimes anonymous visitor to Cropredy, and doesn't live too far away. Interestingly, a lot of the musical roots and inspiration, of that "other band" he fronted in the 70's, came from a very English folk tradition- witness his collaboration with a certain Sandy Denny on one of their albums.

I would like to see Percy there once again.  Especially as there was a rumour he was suppposed to be playing 2004.

However, the wonderful Eric Bogle  is over from Aus then, and according to his website, after playing Lochinver Village Hall on the 7th August, is free until the 15th when he plays Lossiemouth.........

Hmmmmmmmmm - I wonder.....

However, 2 Scottish Singer/Songwriters in quick succession may be a bit too much for some - however different they may be!!!

Anyone else think this is a strange comment to make when discussing a festival run by a band nearly 40 years old?

I don't think Anna was being bitchy, Martin, it does read a bit like that though.

They are still going, and going quite well at the moment. Their recent live album's great - had it on yesterday in fact - and they're about to release a 2CD reissue of 'Fisherman's Blues', featuring loads of bonus tracks...and even some which aren't on the bootlegs from the sessions. The current sound is quite 'Fisherman's Blues'-ish, with Steve Wickham back on the fiddle so they'd fit in well musically, but I've mentioned them a few times in the past and Peggy's not keen.

That was the year before last so I reckon they're ripe for another slot. I don't think you could ever get bored of seeing them live.

HAYSEED DIXIE

Now I want you all to place an index finger on the screen and really focus...picture them on stage...feel the bassline of Ace of Spades thrumming through your feet...smell the sweaty moshers. Come on people, let's make it happen Uri Geller style.

Beautiful Days is a very different festival to Cropredy and it would work quite well to have both bands playing both places. At BD Levellers usually finish off the Sunday so I would put Fairport on as Saturday headliner in the Big Top which would be a totally different atmosphere to Cropredy. Then at Cropredy I'd have Levellers on Friday in their Acoustic guise, again different to their BD set-up.

I'd go to both with that line-up. Mind you I'd go to both anyway  :)

Cheers

Nick

As I read over these recommendations, I see numerous bands I'm sure I would enjoy.   Family Mahone I saw two years ago, and would happily welcome them back.   Oysterband I missed in 2004, but would would be glad of another opportunity to see them.

But may I offer two across-the-pond bands for your consideration, either of who would get the place rockin':

Sonny Landreth, slide guitarist extraordinaire from Lafayette, Louisiana USA, with his zydeco- and blues-influenced rock;

Nils Lofgren - played with Neil Young long ago, later with Ringo Starr's band, then with Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band from 1984, and again on Bruce's E Street Band reunion tours during 1999-2003.  But he puts on a great show with his own songs and his own band - check his most recent live album recorded in 2002, for example.

Respectfully submitted,
Tom***

Not sure about the screaming teens, Andy. You'd have to be a fairly weird teenager to like his stuff. I'd say it's more for the Dido market, thirty something women, the sort who burn candles while they're in the bath.

I had a borrow of his album, stuck it on my iPod in fact but, while it was a fairly pleasant listen while reading the paper, I've not listened to it again. He's got a bit of an odd voice as well.

PS Anna, check out 'Room To Roam' by the Waterboys (if you haven't already), folk-rock with flutes...

Not bigger fish, Mik. Different fish.

Programming a festival must be a really difficult balancing act. If they did have someone like Blunt on the Friday(which they won't), tickets would probably sell out instantly to an audience with little interest in all the other stuff. Given that you can't buy Friday only tickets, you could have the bizarre prospect of a sell-out on Friday and a relatively empty field on Saturday!

Anyway - The Waterboys, definitely - there's a band to get the vibe going - they're on top form at the moment, judging by the gig I saw in Dublin a couple of weeks ago. Or Spirit of the West, but that's a recurrent theme with me and terribly, terribly unlikely, sadly. In real terms? I reckon The Dylan Project are in with a chance. An outside "that would be incredible" vote? The Violent Femmes.  [;-)

How about The Eighteenth Day of May? Or are they too similar to Fairport?

Haven't heard them *yet* - but they're coming to Oxford next month - and doing the Bush Hall in London. I intend to catch at least one of them, and I'll be educated....

Not sure if Ben is touring anytime soon. I think he finished a major European tour back in the Autumn. I missed it unfortunately.

I'm so glad someone else asked who "Percy" was, so I didn't have to...

Has anyone else heard Blackmore's Night? They are fantastic. (Richie Blackmore does folk rock brilliantly). I expect they would be beyond the budget though, and mostly seem to play in German castles, so a field would be a bit beneath them.

Forgive me if they"ve already been mentioned, or maybe folks don't like them much, I do and that is Altan. I suppose it would have been better prior to 94? when Frankie Kennedy was alive, but last I saw thew a few years ago they were still quite excellent although the crowd was a bit studious when clearly half of what they play is dance music. I don't think that would be the reaction in the fields at Cropredy. They may well have played it before I dunno.

Don't think Altan have ever played Cropredy before; I saw them at Cambridge Folk Festival couple of years back, and yes they were excellent. I still am speculating that Percy might do it, especially as the sister of his former drummer is in the line-up over the weekend.

Has Cropredy ever had a jazz act? Surely someone in their ranks is a fan if not all. There again maybe not. Had in mind one of the most important voices of the past fifteen years and one of the best bass players of the past 35 dating back to MD's Bitches Brew band and that would be England's own Dave Holland. Also wonder if Minnesota's wonderful Boiled in Lead (Celtic, Folk, Metal, Thrash, Jazz) have ever played at this event. Todd Menton, the singer recently rejoined after 10 or 15 years, a MAJOR plus. If you've not heard of them Old Lead and from the Ladle to the Grave would be good places to start. Fans of Fairport, Steeleye and Tull will likely be intrigued. Their version of Twa Corbies is particularly evil.

Title: Re: Cropredy Headline Friday

I used to love 10CC, and still do love many of the songs, but all the best ones were written largely by Godley and Creme. Dreadlock Holiday was written after they left and is pretty good, but it was essentially a different band - you can only go so far with cod-reggae (think Typically Tropical and it gets a little uncomfortable).

Like Fairport the current band are nothing like the original, but unlike Fairport nothing from the last 27 years will be known by the vast majority of the Cropredy crowd. And will they be allowed to play the entire back-catalogue by G&C?

Confused and a bit disappointed.

Title: Re: Cropredy Headline Friday
Post by: David W on March 28, 2006, 09:15:42 AM
The tag line of Graham Gouldman and friends is a bit of a worry but they toured a greatest hits show in the last couple of years. The band looks as if it willinclude Mick (Rick?) Fenn, who has been a long time guitarist wih the band, and some session players, possibly including friend of FC and Maart drummer Paul Burgess.

I am pretty pleased with the news, I really loved 10cc as a kid and hopefully it will be a good night.

Cheers,

Jackdaw

Much the same views; the 1970s for me were either Pink Floyd or folk rock. I always boxed 10cc etc along with 60's  stuff like the Hollies (could be worse, they are on tour at the moment).

Having said that, when there have been bands in the past in which I was not interested, I have never been at a loss to know what to do at Cropredy. I never look on it as being 'getting my money's worth'. See you in the pub, Issy  :)

It's more or less a tribute band. Thiis is disappointing - not that I mind tribute bands - who cannot love Aussie Pink Floyd or Dylan Project? But a 10cc tribute band?
I saw 10cc at Reading many moons ago and disliked them then. They played under little individual arches Spinal Tap style. Might stay here and watch The Buzzcocks.

I am not too upset by 10cc.

They will provide an aural backdrop to a legendary attempt to drink the bar dry on Friday night. I shall just treat them as I would a juke box in a pub - but with the added bonus that I will know many of the songs. It could even become a mass karaoke session. How funny would that be after umpteen pints of ale?

Shame on you lot: 10cc were great FUN in the 70s and probably still are now - my vinyl still comes out now an' then when I feel like a bop and a laugh.
In my opinion some of the best un-folky sets were the likes of Roy Wood after all. I think they could be just the thing for that late spot when my brain is usually a little beyond subtlety.

10cc were great FUN in the 70s

My Sindy dolls were great fun in the 70s... I rarely feel the need to dust 'em off these days, though.

It just seems something of a wasted opportunity, that's all.  :(

Glen Tilbrook, John Martyn, Steeleye Span and now 10cc  [;-) What a fab festival line-up  :) It's Fairport's Cropredy Convention and therefore the musical genre of the bands who are booked to appear is entirely at the discretion of the organisers who select them.

If you don't like the line-up..................tough. ;D There's plenty to amuse and entertain throughout the festival field and in the village beyond.... AND there is a world outside the tiny confines of this north Oxfordshire haven .............

Since the festival went three days the Friday night headliners have been:

2000 -Priory of Brion (Percy and some mates kbnocking out cover versions - quality playing but not exactly groundbreaking)

2001 - De Danann (I don;t think these guys actually stood up during their headluine set - dull and worthy)

2002 - FC oldies set

2003 - Procul Harem (living off past glories)

2004 - Tull (love 'em or oloathe 'em)

2005 - Dylans, following RT  (either a great homage to his Bobness or another tribute band, take yer choice)

and now for 2006 we have a version of 10cc

I would say the choice fits in pretty well with what has gone before and I'm looking forward to it, and I find myself agreeing with Mark that we could be in for a 20,000 strong drnken karoke (Big Boys Don't Cry ...)

It's Fairport's Cropredy Convention...

Yee-eesssss.... but they're not going to be the only ones there, are they?

Don't get me wrong - I like listening to any music in a field with beer and chums, me.

And Mrs Skirky has taught me all about the circle of concern/circle of influence, so you'll not catch me whingeing about stuff I can't influence.

I just want to up my post count, frankly.

and the fact that we all go regardless just makes fairport's life that much easier - they could book steps and we'd still all be there.
go figure.

A-hem - 10cc last time I saw them was at Cardiff Castle with Steeleye Span ,Man -and Budgie .Mid seventies if not mistaken .  Tipped it down with rain that day. It would be nice to see them again but -----I`m Not In Love -- ::) ;)--with them .Now Budgie  or Man at Croppers  ? That would turn a few heads .  [;-)
Pastie Boy- it was 1975; I still remember the rain which soaked everyone and everything. Thin Lizzy also played with a very alive, then, Phill Lynott. Steeleye were great and so were 10cc. Not sure how I feel about seeing them now, though, especially if they are little more than a tribute band

Jackdaw
Jackdaw, that's a bit unfair. I was at Cropredy that year they played- 1994. They weren't that bad, although I agree they didn't go down well. I think it is just their hard psychedelic rock, doesn't really go down well in the middle of an afternoon at a mainly folk festival. Growing up in the South Wales valleys, I have seen Man more times than even Fairport. I have to say their early 70's heydey, when they toured America, supporting certain big West Coast bands are long behind them now. They still exist but with only one member of the 70's band, and even include 2 youngsters who are the sons of the original members!  Their gigs are comparitvly rare now, and tend to be in the back rooms of London pubs, as well as in their South Wales hometowns. They have certain things in common with Fairport- both were formed in the late 60's; both have seen innumerable personnel changes and tragedies; both still play original mateiral, both have had individual members achieve fame in their own right, (Fairport's Richard Thompson and Man's Terry Williams, who became Dire Straits drummer). Difference is that Fairport still sell out venues, still produce good albums and have their own popular festival, Man have been known to play to a few dozen people in a Wathamstow pub.  Ah, the ways of the world....(and no disrespect to Walthamstow pubs).

10CC set a new standard for wit in lyrics in the 70s.  If they get the sound right and you can hear the lyrics you'll have anything from a wry smile to a guffaw.

I've jumped in at the end of this & as usual haven't read all the posts - but I'd like a bit of upbeat  folk to finish off Friday. It's the middle night and usually goes on late after the music finishes ( at least we do !! ) - so something to help keep us awake. peatbog faeries a definite yes - as also Shooglennifty. The reformed Planxty did a great tour last year - although they are all getting on a bit so might not be able to stay awake . John Otway ?? - no not really - then nobody would get any sleep.

And while I'm here - I've done only 5 Cropredies and spread out over 12 years - for a variety of reasons it hasn't been possible to do every year - I usually come across with my brother - so we don't really get to know people when we do come across from N.Ireland. two friendly guys - like real ale & all the usual festival goings on. It would be good to get to know a few of you beforehand so we could say hello at the bar. cead mille failte, green ink  and all that..

Just caught up on the 10cc news after getting back from two weeks in Lanzarote, and I think they'll make a cracking headline act on Friday.  I agree with Mark that the entire show could turn into a mass karaoke sing-a-long as 10cc have a lot of hit singles to their name, and we're all likely to know a few of them (at least).  I'm really looking forward to seeing 10cc live again, whatever the line-up is these days.

I wonder if they'll do "The Second Sitting for the Last Supper"?  One of my favourites.  [;-)

Cheers

Hi all - what a great sociable lot you are !! Thanks for your messages.

We're from Dungannon in the proud county of Tyrone in N.Ireland, although now living close to belfast. Dungannon is famous for the O'Neills, who gave the English a hard time in 1553 or thereabouts - they cut off the head of the Earl of Essex, but we have apologised, and they won't do it again. Also famous as the birthplace of Barry Devlin who was the bass player with Horslips !! No need to apologise for that. ( Wonder iof they would reform for the Friday night headlining slot?? ).

We shall post a photo & some personal details when I can figure out how it works..................................

Anyway - we hope to make some new friends before August - and to be duly present at the bar by mid-afternoon on the Thursday.

Well I reckon it'll be a blast a bit like when the lead singer of Supertramp (Alan someone?) guested during the Fairport set.  Hands up all those who unexpectedly burst into a strangled karaoke session then.
Like 'em or not, bar propping or fieldward, fitting in or not, real thing or tribute you probably know most of the songs and will end up warbling with the best of us. I only know the 10cc stuff that got airplay and I'm looking forward to it. (Apologies to those within earshot, it's the only time I sing, in darkness surrounded by 15000 friendly strangers)
