The photos already posted show how much the lads enjoyed it and believe me the audience had a great night. Wonderful to see Peggy playing bouzouki and guitar as well as some triffic mando playing. The rapport between the two, both musically and just as "two mates having a good time" was a pleasure to witness. With the extensive combined professional history of these two consummate musicians, only the best was likely to happen. And you know what? IT DID Title: Re: Peggy and Peej gigs Post by: Delfini (Diane) on June 05, 2006, 11:30:50 PM Another coup by Farnsfield Acoustic ::)
It was an excellent night (even more special as it was my birthday ;)) with a trawl through PJ and Peggy's respective histories, great music and musicianship. ;D The rapport between Peggy and PJ made it even more fun.......plus their rapport with us - the audience - made it a real night to remember :) It was great to catch up - and met new - Talkawhilers. Ok, maybe I sound biased, but I loved it - go see them, you'll have a great time ;D Thanks Peggy, thanks PJ, thanks Farnsfield ;) Title: Re: Peggy and Peej gigs Post by: Rozza on June 06, 2006, 12:26:26 PM The pair were equally excellent at Hitchin on Sunday night. As well as the 'Hedge of Sound' songs, I enjoyed their version of Sandy Denny's 'Bushes and Briars', and Dave Pegg's songs, particularly the 'Jack Frost' song from Tull's Christmas album. The version of 'Going Up Leicester' was particularly good, especially for a Leicester exile like me - it even had a break for translation so the Hertfordshire audience could understand it. Peggy told a great story about booking Lonnie Donegan for Cropredy a few years back. A good night - catch them if you can!
Title: Re: Peggy and Peej gigs Post by: Amethyst (Jenny) on June 07, 2006, 12:30:35 PM Peggy & Peej at Gunthorpe for Farnsfield Acoustic.. Saturday 3rd June 2006
It was the first time we’d used this very pleasant village hall by the River Trent, but we arrived on time (4pm) and just as we were wondering what time P & P would arrive.. there they were. They came with instruments galore and big smiles on this lovely warm sunny day. Tables were set out and posters blu tacked to the walls, sandwiches eaten and wine sipped.. it was going to be a good night. The sound check was fun.. they were really getting into it.. lots of laughs! Peggy told us the story of how his head was shat upon by a bird as he was preparing the veggie kebabs for his grandson’s first birthday BBQ.. a story which he later told the whole audience….. the tone was set! Dee Bee was the first to arrive.. at the same time as the band.. closely followed by a couple of blokes who’d ordered their tickets.. then went off to one of the four pubs in the village. Gower Flower was already there.. (good name for a song there!) and was to run the raffle for us.. she had a Welsh flag on her table! Pastieboy and Pastiegirl brought Mave the Rave.. it had been her 70th birthday a couple of days earlier and she was excited about the gig.. as were we all. Mic and Adrian arrived and went to find food. 7.30 came and the crowds rolled in.. Catherine and Colin from up north with big smiles and nuts that made us cough! Delphini came to celebrate her birthday that day with us, and we met new TAWer ‘eclaire’.. this lady has been a regular Farnsfield Acoustic attendee but had so far managed to remain elusive.. good to meet her at last! Edthefolkie came too along with his group of mates and this time he took his rubbish away with him (!) (Sorry private joke there) Last, but by no means least, TAWer to arrive was David Stevenson who just made it.. good to meet him too for the first time. There were lots of others there too.. including a couple who lived next door to the hall.. I don’t think they knew anything about our heroes.. but they went away happy and hopefully converted. It was the first date of their first tour together as a duo.. any nerves weren’t apparent, they both appeared completely at ease with each other and their set. The first half saw Peggy playing guitar and bouzouki as well as his mandolin. I’d never seen him play these two instruments before.. it was a treat and another example of his superb musicianship! PJ played all sorts of guitars… each one brilliantly. The evening consisted of a mix of songs from each and tunes in various tempos. If anyone would like a set list I have one. The back catalogues of each, and their past and present incarnations were represented.. Jack Frost and the Hooded Crow from Peggy’s Tull days and Johnny England from PJ’s Little Johnny England days… we were told that this band had not died.. good news indeed! Barbary Lil from PJ’s Hedge of Sound was fantastic. Ellen sold a quite a few of these cds on the merch table. Goin’ Up Leicester needed translation .. it was hilarious. Peggy’s Pub played on mandolin was quite different to the usual arrangement and Carolan’s Draught was superb. Peggy told the tale of booking Lonnie Donegan for Cropredy a few years ago (who remembers that??) and had us all in stitches. (Sadly it was shortly before he died.) He told us stories of Mark Knopfler and of course of Sandy Denny. During the interval we gave the three birthday ‘girls’ a little cake with a candle.. Gower Flower being the third.. Peggy and PJ joined in the celebrations with us.. they had previously made a dedication to them all from the stage. All too soon the evening ended and everyone slowly dispersed.. (many back to our house) we had lots of positive comments and many promises to ‘come again’. We left the hall as we found it and went away happy knowing that Peggy and Peej had a few pounds in their pockets and we’d had another successful gig. Long may it continue. Thanks Peggy and PJ! According to the Fairport website Tull was part of the mix. Mostly interested to see if it was something other than Lifes a Long Song or Jack Frost both of which Peggy's dealt on before. More than welcome again but my insatiable Tull antennae must be kept attuned.

Cheers johnnysaint Title: Re: Peggy and Peej gigs Post by: bernief on June 21, 2006, 02:09:58 AM Thanks Johnny,
A disappointingly small turnout, but it was really a tryout for the venue, which passed with flying colours. Great sound, I thought. The stayaways missed a good show. Peggy & Peej were fab - it's hard to generate warmth and intimacy to a small crowd but they did it in spades. A preposterous level of musicianship. They were kind and misguided enough to invite me to join in on "King Harvest", evidently believing that, because I hang round with musicians, I can sing. Having a voice like a cinder caught under a door, I declined. I would have joined in on "Pipeline" but I hadn't brought my bass. Thanks too to TTL, who were knackered after Big Session and Nancy Elizabeth Cunliffe who, I think, has a real future. Haunting is the word. Here's a question. How many board users live local to Liverpool? Would you support a monthly night at Zanzibar on the lines of that model event, Farnsfield Acoustic? Thanks again, Johnny. Title: Re: Peggy and Peej gigs Post by: AdrianW on June 21, 2006, 04:18:09 AM Here's a question. How many board users live local to Liverpool? Alsager near Crewe. About 100 miles round trip. Doable. Slightly quicker to St Helens. Would you support a monthly night at Zanzibar on the lines of that model event, Farnsfield Acoustic? Yes, provided it was at a weekend, didn't clash with FA or a festival, and I wanted to see the artist. This really deserves a thread of its own! Title: Re: Peggy and Peej gigs Post by: DarrenWilliams on June 21, 2006, 09:09:58 AM Bernie
I live in Newton le Willows and have recently been to the Zanzibar to see a local Liverpool indie-ish band called Neon Hearts. Nice little venue. An acoustic night there sounds interesting. Is there anything of that nature in St Helens or isn't there sufficient demand? Title: Re: Peggy and Peej gigs Post by: bernief on June 21, 2006, 11:17:21 AM I put events on in St Helens, usually at Citadel, though they're between directors at the moment and don't appear to be able to commit to anything.
As soon as they know what their future is, I'll look at it again. 2008 is, of course, Capital of Culture year so it would be nice to get something established in time for that. Maybe I should start a thread.....? Title: Re: Peggy and Peej gigs Post by: johnnysaint (John) on June 21, 2006, 07:43:07 PM Here's a question. How many board users live local to Liverpool? Fairport Convention bassist Dave Pegg and Dylan Project guitarist PJ Wright have teamed up for a series of duo gigs this summer. Their two-man show, called A Night Off With Peggy & PJ, will be at The Mill Arts Centre in Banbury on Wednesday, 5 July starting at 8pm. The title gives a clue to the approach: a mix of stories, songs and tunes from various sources. "We're really looking forward to this tour," says Dave Pegg. "We'll be playing our own original material as well as covers of our favourite songs." The duo's material will be drawn from artists like Fairport Convention, Sandy Denny, Jethro Tull, Pete Scrowther, Mark Knopfler, and The Band. There will even be a few rock 'n' roll era classics. Dave and PJ will play a range of acoustic instruments including guitars, bazouki, mandolin, dobro, harmonica, and bass. "Peggy is a great raconteur and I know plenty of duff jokes," says PJ, "so it should be an idiosyncratic, rocking evening of virtuoso fun for all the family." Tickets are available from The Mill Box Office on 01295 279002 Title: Re: Peggy and Peej gigs Post by: Ethans Granny (Carolyn) on June 30, 2006, 01:31:49 PM I'll be there with Ethan's Mum and Dad, while Ethan's Grandad will be babysitting.

Title: Re: Peggy and Peej gigs Post by: Jonathan on August 04, 2006, 10:07:30 PM I seem to remember reading something about them taping a show (or two?) for a possible live release, but for the life of me, I can't remember where. Does this sound familiar to anyone else? If it's on the official FC website in bold letters, I'll feel like a fool, but I couldn't find it there when I looked, so I don't think it was there that I saw it.
I wonder what the chance of them playing the states is? O.k., we can all stop laughing now... ;) Title: Re: Peggy and Peej gigs Post by: Chris on August 05, 2006, 07:28:58 PM I understood that a couple of shows were to be taped / recorded, but I can't remember who told me!
