As we all know, one of Swarb's musical partners is Alistair Hulett.  In the late 80s / early 90s, Ally was a member of Sydney-based folk-rock band Roaring Jack.  They only ever did one video, for the song "Framed" - and it's now on YouTube!

A Fairport related film that I think is worth watching on You Tube is from XTC who are performing 'Books are Burning' on the BBC's arts programme, 'The Late Show', it features the fabulous and majestic DM upon the drum throne.

I shall go in search of DM performing with Kaja on TV's 3-2-1 show now!

Just to gauge demand, who wants a copy ?  It is a fantastic film.  E-mail me with FC in the subject if you do...

Once I've got the whole gig transferred to DVD (soon I hope), depending on demand I'll see what I can do (i.e. if it's just a few, no problem, if lots of you want one I'll need something toward media and P&P), assuming FC don't have a problem with that (I know Simon wanted a copy).

Just a quick note to let everyone who requested a copy of the Maidstone film (both lurkers and regulars alike) know that I haven't forgotten, have made a note of all requests, and will be getting it transferred, copied & shipped in the next couple of weeks (friend with DVD recorder permitting).

And yes, it was the Monday warm-up rehearsal in The Mill that same year. I thought it clever that the B&W bits were rehearsal, the colour bts Cropredy.

Loved the Dirty Linen clip.  Yep that sure wasn't a Woodbine Swarb was toking on!  And how cool is Peggy?  He didn't even have to look at his bass until it got really complicated!

This is part of the film "Glastonbury 71" (I think), which was released some years ago. Bl---dy  br----nt film; I had it on video, lent it to someone and it was then lost. Disaster! But it is an excellent document, not just of some great music, but also as a piece of social history. Some fascinating crowd scenes which give a real flavour of those heady, and long gone now, times.

Memories of that time - Swarb leaving the stage while Simon and the other two Daves were playing something to cadge fags... Swarb and Peggy trying to play so fast that Simes couldn't keep up (Dagenham Roundhouse 1971)... But he bloody well did - that nice white or creamTelecaster... Playing at the Crystal Palace Bowl...

No but in other things like Matty Groves off 'From Cropredy to Portmeirion' the solo's not great. But I do agree, top drummer, one of the best, just not a soloing.

Is that Simon playing Peggy's bass?  Or just bass parts on his own guitar. He and RT look too stoned to care. It's a real "Birmingham boys" on  v. "London Boys" on stage. Great clip.

No, Simon is playing Peggy's viola (Macca) bass. His guitar is much MUCH bigger (see other clips)

A little while ago, Ric Sanders and Chris Leslie played as a duo in the Holywell Music Rooms in Oxford. It was a warm-up concert for the Oxford Folk Festival.

I filmed a handful of bits and pieces at that concert. It's been ages but I've finally got round to sorting the film out and putting it up on YouTube.

I used to get phone calls about 7 some mornings when scheduled acts cried off for that morning's live show and would dash over to Pebble Mill and toss in some simple live material like that. No problem and happy happy days with a great team. Even the gardener - what was his name? Titface?

Yes, I have this on video somewhere, the 6:55 Special. It's been ages since I saw it but I have to dig it out again after seeing this. Later on, Martin Carthy also joins in for Meet On The Ledge (sings a verse, too), and does a solo song, possibly Sovay (like I said it's been ages so I am not wholly sure). Despite being clearly about a band which had a long history but basically at this time WAS history, Simon still looks as if he just left high school!
The band also does Walk Awhile - I think they kick off the programme with it - with a verse only ever done then, if memory serves it goes "on the 13th of August, and the 14th too/We will be at Cropredy/Just to play for yououououo". They've since stuck with the original lines, which is a good idea.
It would be cool if someone somewhere posts the 1977 BBC Scotland feature, I think it was simply called In Concert, which has the Bonny Bunch line up for about half an hour in fab quality. I definetely had it, and copied it for some people (it must be out there somewhere), and can't find it back for the life of me - I searched high and low but this tape is missing - which is a drag because that was excellent quality stuff and a great performance to boot. Hopefully on Youtube someday ...

So rare to see Anne Briggs on camera, and even rarer to hear her talk with such warmth about Sandy. Makes you realise what a cracker a Sandy documentary could be if Bob Harris manages to get it together.

On the contrary - they were good mates, albeit with divergent lifestyles (see Sandy's "The Pond and the Stream"). Sorry, Jules. I expressed myself badly. What I meant was that it's rare to hear her talking about her old friend, and her comments in this interview, about Sandy's "sense of song", show particular warmth.

It's interesting the way that the reporter describes her as 'The voice of Fairport Convention' considering she was only with them for a total or 3 or 4 years, out of 40. Just shows what a huge impact she had on the band.

I was at Edinburgh when Chris sang this amazing song, and I thought "what the heck was that"? I came on here to find that everyone was talking about Reynardine, and I knew straight away. Then I found your post so I'm in heaven. Was working in London at the end of the week so took the opportunity to see them again in Croydon, wasn't disappointed. Now I know why my friends go to see FC every year.

Definitely right on the date, it's from the "In Real Time" video of Cropredy '87, which has also been shown several times on TV - I have an off-air recording from C4 from about 1989 somewhere.

Originally from the west side, now actually in northern Baltimore County.  And I believe the only thing I didn't post was a partial recording of Jools Holland.

Sort of on topic - In 1982 I produced a Richard and Linda Thompson concert in Baltimore, on their last tour.  I was instructed by the booking agent that I had to videotape the show and hand off the tape to the soundman.  I've never seen anything about it since, never even saw it myself.  Anyone know anything?  It would look like a black-and-white recording, because my band was the opening act and I have that tape.  (We couldn't afford very good lighting so the tape ended up looking that way.)

Yes much better than the abominations that pass for cricket sweaters these days. Still wearing a genuine cream coloured lambswool one. Sahme that it seems to shrink in my kitbag each winter.

He played it at Chesham last night ... for the first few songs, anyway.  It sounded good and I would have liked him to play it some more.  It is rather large and he kept adjusting his position - I don't know if he found it uncomfortable :-\

Interesting that he used that one, as he has another much smaller acoustic.

as a relation of many bass players ,i am led to believe that while they sound nice, acoustic basses are pigs to play because theres nowhere to rest the fingers/thumb like there is on electric basses

I thought the electric bass sounded much better - the acoustic didn't produce a very even sound across the range of pitch.

It wasn't that Bass, it was a different one!

That makes sense as I thought he sold all his instruments a few years back when he and Chris split up.

Certainly he changed his main bass at about that time, mind you Peggy often does a sort of shoulder shuffle when playing as if he isn't entirely happy with the way the bass is set on his shoulders.

I think I am right in saying that Peggy has recently acquired a Stonebridge acoustic bass, which he played at his birthday bash. No idea what the original one in the clip was, though.

As for shuffling his shoulders, I should think after playing a bass for over 40 years, anyone would!

But at least the other one was *acoustic* ;)

To back up what Malcolm has posted, Peggy has said in the past that suffers with back pain due to many years of lugging heavy bass guitars around.  As a back pain suffer myself and just a little about loads on structures, I can't say that I am suprised.

I saw Dave Pegg & His Cocktail Cowboys live at the Half Moon in August 1983 - just a few days after Cropredy. And quite enjoyable it was, too. It was the first time I met Chris. We had a long and pleasant conversation over a chinese takeaway after the soundcheck that evening. Can't recall too much of the set list, but they did most of Peggy's soloalbum and I distinctly remember a medley of tunes I've never heard before or since.

Natasha summarises that it is the end of the first day of the festival, and that what higher can you sing or say than that everybody needs love?
Boris says that there are enough people there for an army, even two, but two armies of peace.
Natasha suggests that 'All You Need is love' become the anthem of the festival and everyone join in singing.

And if anyone wasn't moved to tears by that introduction they soon were by Patti Smith's rendition.

Yes, it’s pretty rough. In their biography of Ashley, Hinton and Wall spend a page talking about this session, which they say was recorded for Dutch radio. I can only assume they must have heard a much better tape than this. If it was radio, I suppose it’s too much to hope that the master survives..?

Yes, Reno Nevada is in full on the Iain Matthews VHS bio video Compass & Chart Vol 1, long out of print, of course. The Morning Glory track is new to me though, so I'd love to know the full set list for this Baton Rouge show. So far I know of these two, and of course Time Will Show The Wiser. Anything else?

And the REALLY annoying thing is that I'm sure these tracks are in the French TV archive in full colour somewhere, as there was a tiny bit, I think from Reno, in a Richard Thompson TV docu a couple of years back. I would love to see all these tracks in good quality full colour sometime.

OK, so here's the plan. While Jules distracts her contacts at TV Francais, Dept d'Archives, we mount a two pronged attack. First, blockade Calais for a few days. (Sauce for the gander etc.) Second, boycott President butter, all French wine over a tenner, and switch to Somerset brie. That'll learn 'em, and I confidently expect a brown paper envelope with the colour versions will turn up within a couple of weeks. Possibly.

it was more of a documentary with music by the 9 line up with the addition of Sandy and Simon, rather than a play

Re the Breakfast In Mayfair song, I believe the BBC wiped the master video tape. Good old Beeb, plenty of Black & White Minstrel shows left so no worries eh?  

The programme predated VHS by at least five years - any off-air copy would have to be on a reel to reel tape or maybe U-Matic. Or even err, "wonderful" Philips half inch format.

Maybe somebody rescued a video tape from a BBC skip - stranger things have happened.

Maybe in my morning haze I am misreading something here but I don't know about any room mate but young Derek is the flat out nephew of Butch Trucks who, along with Jaimoe, still hold down the jobs they have had since the start with the Allman Brothers as their drummers. While I presumed the loss of Dickey Betts could not be good news ten years ago or so, last time I saw the Allmans a couple years ago they were firing every bit as well as they did at their alleged peak with Duane. But young Derek has been a member of the Allman Brothers for some years now, I first saw him at the age of 14 in Fitzgeralds roadhouse, Berwyn, Illinois.

Well worthwhile. So grateful to speak of a vibrant FC in 2009.

Aha, that blogger got their info from a post I made on the Sandy Denny list  :)   and fair enough.

The clip certainly does exist and it's still mentioned on the official ABC site.  However, it's not commercially available from their library, as the FAQs state:

"Library Sales supplies the ABC's media collection to commercial operations and professional bodies only, including program makers, advertising agencies and broadcasters."

So unless they decide to put it on their YouTube channel http://au.youtube.com/user/EntertainmentOnABC - as a few GTK clips have been, though I think UK viewers were having trouble accessing those clips anyway - then I don't like the chances...

Not great quality but rare.  The song appeared on Peggy's 'Cocktail Cowboy' album.  It was written by Australian singer/songwriter Glenn Cardier who is still recording, and writing great songs, in a folk/blues/roots kind of style.  Lyrics range from twisted to cynical to touching.  See www.glenncardier.com; especially the videos page (and the story re the Expectatiions clip  :)  ).  He has a new DVD out soon too.

Pretty poor sound & vision on "Old Fashioned Waltz"; however, while listenong/watching, I spotted a link to a (sound only) Phil Lynott vocal on a Sandy tribute song. Intrigued, I gave it a listen - and while, IMO, it's no world-beater as a song, though perfectly pleasant, the acoustic guitar work reminded me somewhat of Fotheringay (the song). Which is no bad thing.

Mmmmyess and no... She was never officially a member of the band but was "Sandy" with them at Cropredy during the early 80s. I guess it was included in that description to boost her credentials for promoting the single.

It's part of the house band from that show at that time (they called themselves The World's Most Dangerous Band): Paul Shaffer (keyboards, band leader, ex-Saturday Night Live, and he's in The Blues Brothers movie), Will Lee (bass), Anton Fig (Drums) and Sid McGinnis (guitar).  They've evolved into the CBS Orchestra, and are the backing band for all the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction events.
