Hello all... I'm currently learning to play a Simon Nicol guitar piece called "End Of A Holiday" from Fairport Songbook 2. Does anyone know what album that is from? It's a lovely piece but I've never actually heard it. It doesn't appear to be on any of the discs in my Fairport collection. I'd very much like to hear the real version to see if I've nailed it.

didnt they do "end of a holiday" fairly recently as one of the intro tunes to matty?

I imagine most of us are non-completists, but from my point of view it's much more likely to be at the other end of their career as opposed to the start.  To my mind the whole essence of what makes this band great are there in the first 5 studio albums.  After that we can all argue until the cows come home about what we like and don't like, but those five are all essential...

make sure you get the actual album"what we did on our holidays" and not the compilation of the same name

I did quote from it for a self-indulgent while as Jim says, but never played the whole thing as Matty has a dropped D tuning and Holiday doesn't. (The Hipshot "Scruggs peg" never made the journey from the Yamaha to the Santa Cruz in '96.)
For real completists I now declare I composed the melody to a set of lyrics Iain Matthews had when he and I and RT shared a flat in '68 in Brent. The (putative) song was to be called "Billy Gives In".
And on that showbiz BOMBSHELL I'm leaving the office for a well-deserved pint.

The sound of front pages being held resonates joyfully throughout the land.  Next step is getting hold of them lyrics...and then organising a flatmate's reunion party.  Preferably in a recording studio.   ;D

I think the first time I heard it live was at the start of the encore set as a reunited Full House line-up headlined Croppers on friday night in 1985. This is still my absolute favourite Cropredy performance. I wish the Cropredy Capers box set had included more than one song from that particular night. It was a total knock-out.

There is also a very fine recording of End of a Holiday on the excellent Mastercraftsmen album.

Mr. Nicol pulled out the song at a RTBB late show in Columbus, Ohio in '83.  After which, came a Night Comes In, followed later by a Calvary Cross - an easy gig to remember!!! :)
