Title: Fairport Convention's "Greatest Songs" Compilation
Post by: Andy on October 04, 2006, 10:53:47 AM
Let's not beat about the bush here, FC have had one hit and, nice tho' it may have been, it would be irresponsible to propose an album of "Greatest Hits" with one track on it.

So, how about your thoughts for an album of "Fairport Convention's Greatest Songs"?

Rules:

1) The compilation can be a maximum of 80 minutes long (and no, not just "Sloth") with at least, say, 10 tracks.

2) There is no rule 2

3) er... that's it

I'll come back with my thoughts later, since, as someone who missed 20 years of Fairport Convention, I missed a huge slab of their output.

Hi,

I skipped Maart and later eras. Not because I don't like them.  But because I wanted to focus on the 69-79 eras. I would have added the lobster, fotheringay, and few others, but I ran out of time. Maart era would have another good cd.

69-79 favorites

1.   Reynardine         4;33
2.   Farewell Farewell       2;38
3.   The Deserter      4;10
4.   Crazy Man Michael      4;35
5.   Flowers of the Forest   3;58
6.   Sir Patrick Spens      3;30
7.   Lord Marlborough      3;21
8.   The Journeyman's Grace 4;31
9.   Banks of Sweet Primroses 4;12
10.   The Bonny Black Hare       3;04
11.   Wake Up John      5;23
12.   The Hen's March Through The Midden / The Four Poster Bed  2;38
13.   Polly On The Shore     4;52
14.   John The Gun (live)      5;03
15.   General Taylor      3;10
16.   Adieu Adieu         2;30
17.   Bottom Of The Punch Bowl / East Nuke Of Fyfe / Ye Mariners All  4;22
18.   Reynard The Fox      2;55
19.   Matty Groves (live)      ?
20.   Bonnie Kate / Sir B. McKenzies (live)  4;52

It's too complicated I'm afraid...just can't do it!  BUT if I'm not allowed to include the whole of the first album I insist upon at least two cuts...Ummm, say Time Will Show the Wiser and Jack of Diamonds, and two other non-debateable essentials are Poor Will and Now Be Thankful...

No, I really do give up.  Can't we just agree upon the first five albums complete plus two other compilation discs...one pre '79 and one post?

 ;D

I think there are some people on this board who would say FC have already produced a Greatest Songs album called:

What We Did On Our Holidays
