Title: Matty Groves Post by: Jono on October 30, 2006, 03:09:22 PM I just stumbled across this...
http://www.pandora.com/music/song/3d09e06f6629c423 Not heard it before... does anybody have this version? Guitar work sounds awesome! And the dialogue sounds amusing too... ??? Title: Re: Matty Groves Post by: Amethyst (Jenny) on October 30, 2006, 03:19:36 PM It's pre 97.. Maart's voice is at the end..
Title: Re: Matty Groves Post by: Cocker Freeman on October 30, 2006, 03:23:34 PM No Chris Leslie banter! You must have been bereft, Amy!
Title: Re: Matty Groves Post by: davidmjs on October 30, 2006, 03:34:11 PM It does exactly what it says on the tin. It's a newly edited version of the song stuck together from loads of different versions for the Fairport Unconventional box set...
Title: Re: Matty Groves Post by: Cocker Freeman on October 30, 2006, 03:37:02 PM There you go, Amy. No need for bereftification at all! Good ship stupid shoe back on course.
Title: Re: Matty Groves Post by: Tasha on October 30, 2006, 04:09:06 PM The music in the background is what has become known as Metal Matty from the 25th Anniversary disc One of my personal Faves- Maart getting heavy! ;) ;D ;D

Title: Re: Matty Groves Post by: Bridgwit (Bridget) on October 30, 2006, 05:29:17 PM Much as I love the current line-up, I miss Maart as well - he must surely feature quite a bit in next year's set, being as he was in one of the longest-running line-ups?
Metal Matty for 2007!!!! :) :) Title: Re: Matty Groves Post by: Jono on October 31, 2006, 09:07:51 AM I'll go with that! :D

Sorry don't know how to do boxed quotes. On the subject of longevity of lineiups: The Maart-Peggy-Norm-DM-RIc line up was THE longest running - but at the end of this month the current line up will be the second longest overtaking Bruce-Swarb-Norm=Peggy at 8 years 8 months. Amazing the things you can find not to do work. Title: Re: Matty Groves Post by: Bridgwit (Bridget) on November 03, 2006, 12:07:46 AM Amazing trivia!
I wonder how long the current line-up will last ......? Title: Re: Matty Groves Post by: Jules Gray on November 03, 2006, 10:36:29 AM The Maart-Peggy-Norm-DM-Ric line up was THE longest running - but at the end of this month the current line up will be the second longest overtaking Bruce-Swarb-Norm=Peggy at 8 years 8 months. Norm? I take it this refers to Simon. I haven't heard him called Norm before. What's the story with this? Jules Title: Re: Matty Groves Post by: Amethyst (Jenny) on November 03, 2006, 10:39:01 AM Norm has been Simon's 'nickname' for ever.. as far as I know...
Title: Re: Matty Groves Post by: Jules Gray on November 03, 2006, 02:39:59 PM Norm has been Simon's 'nickname' for ever.. as far as I know... I had no idea. Why "Norm"? Jules Title: Re: Matty Groves Post by: davidmjs on November 03, 2006, 02:55:06 PM Norm has been Simon's 'nickname' for ever.. as far as I know... I had no idea. Why "Norm"? Jules Glad somebody else asked....! I've been watching, listening to, and reading about the band for a quarter of a century or more and yesterday was the first time I've ever heard Simon being called anything other than Simon... Title: Re: Matty Groves Post by: Amethyst (Jenny) on November 03, 2006, 03:06:58 PM I don't know...
Simon?? Title: Re: Matty Groves Post by: Alex Lyons on November 03, 2006, 03:27:40 PM It's years old, in fact I'm sure there's a post on here from Simon detailing the origins. Dates back to the sessions for the Albion Band's lost classic 'Light Shining' down in Deal (1982 I think that'll make it). Ordering a meal in a restaurant, going for the footballer special, all prawn cocktails etc, as "Norman Normal" and it just stuck. Summat like that anyway....no real meaning/origin though, unlike Swarb's "Compo" which is pretty self explanatory ;D
Have a listen to something like 'The Other Boot' (or anything mid 80s & live) and as well as some pretty stunning music you're sure to hear Peggy use it.
