Title: Fairport Font
Post by: Chris on December 25, 2006, 06:08:06 PM
Anyone ever fancied typing something in the
(http://www.fairportconvention.com/fclogo.gif)
font?.....

It's known as Koster Xmas Special, and is available here (http://www.myfonts.com/search?search%5Btext%5D=koster+xmas+special) for the princly sum of $6....

Unless you know which font-type you want, I would recommend TrueType.

I've ALWAYS wanted to know where you could get this font.

Thanks so much Chris....and a Christmas name as well!

You should have the option to choose evaluation mode.

Download the WinRAR 3.62 trial from here http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm

That should do it :D

Should be interesting to see what people do with this for next Cropredy, what with inkjet t-shirt xfer sheets and even temporary tattoo sheets :o

But with excessive use will the band not need to re-brand. As opposed to re-band which they have numerous times ;D

Zipped files should open automatically in Windows XP without actually installing the program.

If not, you can install the evaluation version, and it will hapilly work beyond it's 30 day limit.

OK, I know this sounds a bit thick, but I've never downloaded a font before - does it add itself to the list of fonts in the drop-down box? If not, how do I use it? I think I saved it to the right place, but it didn't drop-down when I tried it ... do I have to log out and log back in again? I am running XP by the way.

 ???

Ensure it's in the windows/fonts directory and it should appear on the list, you shouldn't need to log out.  And welcome, fellow Dead Can Dance fan :)

Hi GoatBoy - Thanks for the welcome   ;D
and thanks for the advice, I shall have to try again. I thought I had stored it in the right place but evidently not. Can't wait to try it out!

Are you sure you're not just overlooking it in the font list, it's difficult to read that size and I embarrassingly admit to re-installing it three times before noticing it ::)  The pictures below show where it appears in Words font list on my machine and how it should appear in the fonts directory.

Well, same here. I think I shall give up now. Every time I try to install it I get the messge that it's already there. I can't see it and it DEFINITELY doesn't come up in my list.
All I've got between Kartika and Latha is Kristen ITC in my fonts directory.  :(

Please forgive me if I'm being condescending, from that info' it seems you haven't extracted the .ttf file from the archive, you need to 'unzip' the .zip file and place the resulting .ttf file into the \windows\fonts directory.

Done that.  I can find it in there on a search but it doesn't come up on the font list in Word.

Have you rebooted since copying it over?

No.  Will it require this?  I'll give it a go!

Technology - isn't it a wonderful thing  ;D

I suspect the font folder is only checked during boot up - like the registry.

Post by: Barry on December 30, 2006, 07:45:00 PM
Nope .... that didn't work either  ???

Going to try this ..... (From Word 2003 "help")

Installing new fonts

Close any open Windows applications, such as Microsoft Word or Microsoft OutlookŪ.

In Control Panel, click Appearance and Themes.

Note  If you are using Control Panel Classic view or Microsoft Windows 2000, double-click Fonts, and then go to step 4.

In the task pane, under See Also, click Fonts.

Note  If a folder tree appears instead of the task pane, click Folders on the toolbar, and then under See Also, click Fonts.

On the File menu, click Install New Font.

In the Drives list, click the drive you want.

In the Folders list, double-click the folder that contains the fonts you want to add.

Under List of fonts, click the font you want to add, and then click OK.

Notes

To select more than one font to add, in step 6, hold down the CTRL key, and then click each of the fonts you want to add.
You can also drag OpenType, TrueType, Type 1, and raster fonts from another location to add them to the Fonts folder. This works only if the font is not already in the Fonts folder.
To add fonts from a network drive without using disk space on your computer, clear the Copy fonts to Fonts folder check box in the Add Fonts dialog box. This is available only when you install OpenType, TrueType, or raster fonts using the Install New Font option on the File menu.

Right, that worked.  what I did was to extract the font (TTF file) to "My documents" and then follow the instructions as above thus actually installing the font rather than just copying the file to the directory.

Nope, the font dir is dynamic. Dunno why people have had probs, but I'm glad you figured it out, Barry.

Fonts need 'installing' into the Fonts directory - which isn't the same as just saving said font into the directory.

It did for me too, but from the MS article it hints that registry entries are made, so it possibly depends on what version of Word or whatever WP you're using.

Worked straight away for me in Word and Photoshop.
