I wonder what chance of Jerry playing with Fairport then?  That is if he's still playing with Big Brother as he did in 2006...

I'll be at the Iron Horse on May 27.It's a long drive(over 4 hours)but it is -again- the closest gig. Luckily I can combine it with the trip for my nephew's grad. from Amherst College. While he's having a last evening with friends my sister and I will treat ourselves to the show.

School called off because of snow (o.k., it was two inches, but we're wimps in Virginia) AND I find Fairport's US tour dates.  Making a good day better!   ;D

Thanks Chris, I've been wondering/hoping they'd do a US tour, and hadn't had the time to check.  Good, I missed them the last couple years, and Baldwin's Station is supposed to be a great place to see a concert.

This may or may not be acoustic - no doubt this will become clear in the fullness of time.....for those that need proof I'm not making it up, check here (http://www.folkandroots.co.uk/Features.html)

"There's something special to look forward to at the end of the summer
this year with the launch of the very first Isle of Wight Folk and
Blues
Festival in beautiful Ventnor on the south coast of the island. With
the
revival of the IOW Rock Festival and the success of the atmospheric
Bestival, the island is fast becoming a mecca for music lovers of all
ages and tastes, and Ventnor itself is home to a burgeoning local music
scene as well as the fast-growing IOW International Jazz Festival which
fills the beautiful well-preserved Victorian spa resort with music
every
April.

Spurred on by the success of the Jazz Festival, its organisers, Phil
Snellen and Geri Ward, have joined forces with island-based promoters
Vaguely Sunny to create a new annual event focusing on the best in
contemporary and traditional folk and blues music which will take place
for the first time over the weekend of 21st-23rd September 2007.

Headliners Fairport Convention first played on the island back in 1968
at the very first Rock Festival and after 40 years of genre-defining
musical adventure and nearly as many personnel changes they will be
playing Ventnor Winter Gardens on Sunday 23rd April. Emerging from the
60's underground, Fairport were originally dubbed the "British
Jefferson
Airplane", and they evolved a highly original folkrock sound that saw
them appearing on Top Of The Pops and getting enthusiastic radio
support
from esteemed DJ John Peel. During their long career, the band have
made
some seminal records, including "Liege and Lief", their 1969 classic
album which was launched with a sell-out concert at the Royal Albert
Hall and which was recently voted 'Best Folk Album Ever' by Radio 2
listeners. In its time, Fairport has included in its ranks such
luminaries as singer sandy Denny and guitarist Richard Thompson and
their musicianship has gained them a worldwide following.

Certainly one of the more unusual acts booked for the new festival is
the Scottish band Salsa Celtica which, as the name suggests, blends the
rhythms of Latin American music with the authentic sounds of
traditional
Celtic folk instrumentation. It is musical hybrid that has proved
extremely popular, seeing the band rising from their origins on the
Scottish club scene to their current status as stars on the
international festival circuit. They have recently been nominated for
three awards in the 2007 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, including "Best Live
Band" and "Best Traditional Track" for the beautiful Grey Gallito which
features folk superstar Eliza Carthy.

You may have heard that there's a very vibrant young folk scene of
emerging artists that are taking the musical traditions into the 21st
century with a new approach to song structure and instrumentation. This
so called 'nu folk' is embodied by another act booked for the inaugural
festival, the young London-born singer and musician, Lisa Knapp.

Lisa Knapp is fast emerging as a highly distinctive artist from one of
the most creative and active underground music scenes of recent times.
She merges a radiant style of traditional folk and self-penned song,
with fiddle, hammer dulcimer, strings, banjo and sonic delights from
the
technological age.

Lisa was born and grew up in South London's Tooting area. She was
brought up in a musical family where sing-alongs around the piano were
common, the old Bush record player was put to good use and the school
provided her with violin lessons. Lisa's musical development led her
through drum and bass, teenage raves, acid house and an electric guitar
bought to learn Jimi Hendrix songs.

Then, in her teens, she came across folk music when she heard a
friend's
record collection. She listened to the extraordinary voices, the vivid
stories and the superb musicianship of Annie Briggs, Shirley Collins,
Martin Carthy and Pentangle and she was hooked. "At the time I was
completely out of step with my friends and was one of the few young
people there. Yet there was a special, all inclusive vibe within the
club that felt right to me."

Then, just as everything was falling into place, serious health
problems
put music on the back burner for a number of years. During this time
she
met her now partner, Irish fiddler, Gerry Diver and had a child.
Encouraged by Gerry, she gradually returned to music and recorded her
version of the traditional song 'Blacksmith' for his debut album.
Influential rock producer Youth (The Verve/U2/Paul McCartney) heard the
track playing in a studio on London's Tin Pan Alley, Denmark Street and
offered to work with Lisa, producing a highly acclaimed remix of the
track which fuses the traditional fiddle sounds of folk with the vast
array of sonic possibilities offered by contemporary sample-based beats
and rhythms.

Vaguely Sunny's Vic King caught Lisa's act at the recent Celtic
connections Festival in Glasgow and was very impressed by what he
heard.
"She has a great voice in the tradition of the great English
traditional
folk singer Shirley Collins," says Vic. "As English as a walk through
an
apple orchard, listening out for the cuckoo in early summer, but with a
very modern edge to her music, helped by the use of tape loops."

With a new album out soon, Lisa Knapp is one of the rising stars of the
UK folk scene and we are very excited to be bringing such an exciting
new talent to the island for what promises to be a weekend of gorgeous
music at the very end of the summer. Tickets will be available soon
from
the Festival Office at 6, Pier Street and further details of all the
great bands booked for the festival are available at the official
website http://www.iwfolkblues.co.uk or call 01983 856206."

Title: Re: Acoustic Dates 2007
Post by: steve-n on April 24, 2007, 10:06:19 AM
As Chris has mentioned it, a few thoughts from the sauna that was Cox's Yard on Sunday evening. Much to the surprise of the Stratford audience, TTL opened for FAC. Roughly the same set as for the Wintour with Danni's voice just about holding out.

Due to some unexplained technical glitch, it seemed that Chris was a bit restricted in changing instruments. The first half closed with a storming violin/mandolin Canny Capers rather than the usual violin/violin interplay. Agree with Chris that Spring Song and The Vision work well acoustically - so,surprisingly, does The VW Song! Other highlights were Beth's vocal on WKWTTG, Lancashire Hills, and John Gaudie(with Chris by now on violin), which closed the set.

S&J - already looking forward to Worcester on Wednesday.

Title: Re: Acoustic Dates 2007
Post by: Chris on April 24, 2007, 02:17:28 PM
The lead on Chris's fiddle was much shorter than usual, which restricted his movement. When Beth needed his chair, the furthest he could go was the floor of the stage beside her....just!

I didn't find out why the lead was so short....

Title: Re: Acoustic Dates 2007

I blame global warming.

Actually re-reading my original post, I really haven't given TTL credit for a great performance. They've really come a long way musically since Tewkesbury. It was a bit of a shame that they couldn't all fit onto the stage to take part in MOTL but Cox's Yard, lovely as it is, is the venue equivalent of a broom cupboard.

S&J - still looking forward to Worcester!

Just in from the Huntingdon Hall - and no, no TTLs in evidence. Very good night though, in spite of the fact that the hall was, unusually for FAC, not completely full. Certainly a memorable evening from my point of view in terms of having two of the biggest laughs I can remember from the 16 years I've been going to see Fairport. First was Simon almost getting away with a quip about a Brazilian, but not (I'll leave the context to your imaginations). Second was Hiring Fair, which was given a big atmospheric build up by Simon and started beautifully, until about 90 seconds in Gerry dropped a tambourine and shattered all thoughts of Cropredy sunsets etc. After a number of comments between the band, plus a stand up apology from Gerry, with Simon continuing to play his guitar all the while underneath, Simon made a valiant attempt to continue. But alas, full on giggles were too much and Simon was unable to sing more than about two more lines before collapsing. So the lad from the Hiring Fair will have to remain lonesome for another night at least. Was very funny though, and we got Slip Jigs and Reels instead.

Definitely a great way to spend a mid week evening, and an ideal bridge for the gap between the Wintour and Cropredy.

Cheers

James

Reminds me of St Albans a few years back when Maart had spent ages getting his bouzar in tune while the band quietly waited and quipped. On the very first chord (can't remember which song) he broke a string. SN had to leave the stage to recover!

Title: Re: Acoustic Dates 2007
Post by: steve-n on April 26, 2007, 10:54:17 AM
Also had a great evening at Worcester.  Can't add very much other than to say the chaps seemed really relaxed, even before the Hiring Fair. Ric, in particular, was on overdrive - his intro to Sophisticated Lady which involved Morris dancing and Rastafarian Old Holborn got almost as big a reaction as Simon's Brazilian (if you'll pardon the expression).

After Sunday's hiccup, Chris had a full range of instruments - you don't realise how much depth the bouzouki gives until its not there. The recovery after the Hiring Fair also highlighted for us what terrific musicians the guys are - a couple of words from Simon, a nod here and there, and straight into Slipjigs and Reels. Another example, Canny Capers is a twin violin showcase, but it's not until you sit directly opposite Gerry that you realise how much work he puts in. (Oh, and sorry if it's been mentioned elsewhere, Gerry got a round of applause as a new grandad - perhaps the reason for the falling tambourine!)

Sadly, all we have room for is a quantity of "Sense of Occasion". This is dictated by the Airlines' need to cut back on what they'll put in the hold or let you take in the cabin, the need to take sufficient personal stuff for 5 weeks away as well as minimal instrumentation, and the fact you can no longer rent a good old Ford Econoline (or similar..) but have to squeeze everything into a Chrysler Voyager (or similar...).
Health and Safety I expect....
