You'll just have to steal something from the newsagents, Ollie, but make sure you've got a "buyer" first.

Any idea on what tracks. I'll order by May 31st if it has some good rarities. I already own all of FC, so some of the offshoot tracks would be grand.

Gone to do the washing up and wash the car, no doubt!  Not to mention mowing the lawn and re-painting the front of the house...

Or was it birthday and Christmas presents for the next couple of years...?

Sorry Ollie, couldn't resist - hope you enjoy the album when you get it.

I think I'm gonna have to get myself a copy...

More info from the Fairport website on tracks

Thanks to all of you who have pre-ordered your copy of 'A Box of Peggs'.

Peggy is delighted with the response so keep 'em coming.

We have a few more details to whet your whistle. The box has a cribbage board theme and feratures 26 previously unreleased tracks drawn from Peggy's extensive career featuring various FC line ups, Jethro Tull, The GPs, The Ian Campbell Folk Group, The Dylan Project, Richard Thompson and Beth Neilsen Chapman.

Even after 18 months of hard slog and wrangling with record companies, the compilation is still being put together and we hope to include rarities from Marc Ellington, Mike Heron, Julianne Regan, Nick Drake, Dan Ar Braz, Ralph McTell, The Uglys, annA rydeR, Bob Fox, Simon Nicol, Excalibur, The Dave Peace Quartet, Steve Ashley, The Crawdaddys and Murray Head.

As we have previously mentioned, subscription orders are being taken now and the completed box set will be shipping in early August, just in time for Cropredy!

I'm SOOOO glad that I convince my Mum!

I'm kinda hoping that it's not the booklet for the box. He said in Cropredy 06 program that it would be to co-inside with the box set release.

Re Nick Drake
Talented as he was, he was never going on to bigger and better things, his mental state saw to that
It is probably because he was the way he was that his music has the lasting resonance that it posesses
remember he sold precious few lps during his life and was only retained on island as a pet project by Chris Blackwell
his music stands as his monument

Title: Re: A Box Of Peggs

I reckon Nick Drake would eventually have got out of performing. He'd probably be presenting Match Of The Day now or be just back from the World Cup cricket.

Hippy Peggy indeed...that is a cosmic phot  ;D

Now all Mr Pegg needs to do is persuade SWARB to write a book too. I suppose it would need a Parental Guidance sticker on it though.

AAAARRRRGGGGHHHHH!!! Somebody has let the pedant out again...

Has anyone else wondered if that's an apostrophe next to the second G on the picture of the box set on the website - and if it'll be there on the final article?

There's no sign of it in the write-up...

Technically, it's correct. Peggy's surname is Pegg. Singular.

I'm wondering if it's intentional, sort of a play on words/punctuation: "a box of Pegg's music"
After all, Peggy is unique: they can't possibly have meant that to be plural!  ;D ;)

Title: Re: A Box Of Peggs
Post by: Anna on May 24, 2007, 03:14:30 PM
Ah!  But cribbage peg(g)s come in the plural.  And there is only one Pegg (in this context anyway, while being fully aware that he has a family that also bear the same name...)  Depends which way you want to work the pun I suppose.  But it does rather spoil the line of the title, visually speaking.

Ok, pedant hat firmly put in the drawer.  I'll go and do some work now...

It's a play on words: Box of Pegg's is another way of saying Pegg's Box (box associated to Pegg)

Anna will I'm sure will back me up (as she first mentioned it..) look at the position of the apostrophe ....

Between the two Gs...  should be between the final G and the S...

Where's Lynne Truss when we need her??

Title: Re: A Box Of Peggs
Post by: Jim on May 24, 2007, 07:54:16 PM
the apostrophe is beside the final G
viz
P
E
G
G'
S

so its right

Title: Re: A Box Of Peggs
Post by: Nick on May 24, 2007, 07:55:16 PM
No, It is in the correct place (to the right and slightly above the second G). If you read it as being between the two Gs then it would be below the first G which would make it a comma and calling it A Box of Peg,gs would just be silly!

Title: Re: A Box Of Peggs
Post by: Bob Barrows on May 24, 2007, 07:56:57 PM
'm wth Jim here. If it was a comma, then yes, it's between the two G's. As an apostrophe, it's correctly placed. I believe the interpretation of Nick's is the correct one ...  ;D

Ok Shirl, let's see if I can help. First, I take it that you are using IE7 or Firefox. If not, this may still be helpful.

First and easy step, delete all your browser's local files and cookies. In Firefox this is Tools ->  Delete private data. In IE it's done from Internet Options I believe.

Then, again if using Firefox, if you have Firefox with Adblock enabled, whitelist the site by right clicking on the Adblock menu bottom right.

I know IE has something similar.

IF'n this doesn't help, can you be more specific when you say that when it comes to paying you get nowhere? Are the payment forms never appearing at all?

Finally did the negotiating with "himself who holds the purse strings" and ordered mine last night.  Not sure if I'm going to get the bonus CD and/or name on booklet, but I really don't mind either way.

Now, where's the book on whether it'll be out in time for Cropredy?

I have just come back from Peggy's house and I had a sneak preview of a couple of tracks from his box set.  Wow we are all in for a treat.  I heard Jams O'Donnells Jig played by Jethro Tull with some blistering guitar playing by Martin Barre, and a song by the Ian Campbell Folk Group recorded in a Folk Club in 1966.  The sound quality on both was excellent.  Because Peggy has played with so many people, this box set is going to different from the others in that there is so much variety.  He also mentioned that the cut off date to get your name in the booklet is a week today (Thurs).  So all I will say is if you are thinking of buying it or have already done so I don't think you'll be dissappointed, it really is going to be great.

You'll probably get your name in the book, but the 1st 500 got the CD. Those who order it will get it 'early August in time for Cropredy' but the shop release date is August 27. More info here (http://www.fairportconvention.com/general_news.php#news2)

If you choose not to, please don't ask for a copy afterwards....

One is being asked to take pot luck.....to fund the production, for which you are likely to be justly rewarded.

If you choose not to, please don't ask for a copy afterwards....

I was tempted with the box set, but have no intention of spending 40 quid on what may well be a compilation of tracks I already have - as I have many CDs that Peggy played on, and also have his solo albums... If there was a tracklisting, I might find out this isn't the case.

There will be, and likely before the release date - but if you want the extra CD and / or your name in the booklet, you need to commit sight unseen.

I think that's a reasonable offer.

I spent the money on something else, instead,  as I think the offer is rather underwhelming without a track listing. Not fussed about the name, and the extra CD may well be a CD of muffled bootleg quality live recordings or dance remixes of Peggy's greatest hits. I'll be waiting for the tracklisting before I get this one... If I can afford it after splashing out on an extravagance that I shouldn't have got!

There's a lot on it!

...and it's got the Julianne Reagan 'Who Knows' on it  :)

This was on a charity compilation which foolishly I bought on cassette rather than CD and I've been itching to get a more robust copy of it ever since. I reckon is the finest interpretation of that song I've heard. I have a photo somewhere of her singing it  :-*

Agreed.

And seconded. Her decision to stop singing led to the loss of one of the finest voices to have graced the Cropredy stage as well as the cheery company of one of the nicest co-workers a band could ask for. (And we continue to ask her plead with her to reconsider pretty much every year...).
But they're all lovely, those guesting girls, aren't they? We are lucky chaps.

How could you do this to me in my hour of financial need Peggy? Absolutely killer collection from what I can surmise. Hope there's no Tull on the bonus CD or I will be a goner, surprised at the inclusion of the normally average I am your Gun but Pegg knows best. I'm presuming the Under Wraps mentioned must be the acoustic one, great track, maybe weakest album, but I think Dave at least liked making it, I know Martin loves it, and oddly the same songs constituted one of their 5 greatest tours. The Tull album I've heard him not to like, is to me, one of their best, Roots to Branches, and I know he did not like the never ending world tour to new and unusual spots in 93-94, with Ian's voice frequently doing the demented Popeye bit. But it's been getting better!

Apparently, 2 packages have arrived at work for me... I'm at home - typical. Could be A Box of Peggs and/or might be a King Crimson/Projekcts set I ordered from the USA.  Won't know until tonight, when my wife brings them home (and almost inevitably will not enjoy the latter; I think she'll quite like the Peggy set, though, as I'm slowly turning her on to things Fairportish).

Mine's here!!!  As I've got a 5-CD changey thing, I bet you can't all guess what's happily playing it's way through.  It's just gotten onto CD2 - playing through in order just the once, then it'll be random play all the way.

There's some good stuff, and some great stuff.  And my name's in the booklet (YAY!!)  I don't think it's signed - unless I haven't noticed it yet.  No problem, just a small mission for Cropredy.

I guess it's OK to say what's on the bonus CD now?
It's a Live Peggy & PJ gig in Banbury (18th May 2007 for the pedants), with enhanced VIDEO Extras too.

Couple of interesting snippets in the book:

No-one seems to be able to remember what WR0008 was?
(Woodworm Records release)

There's a reference to a Sandy tribute in a Spice Girls song.  Now, I'm not familiar with their canon of work, so can anyone enlighten me?  I promise not to rush out & buy it...

Really enjoying dipping in & out of the CDs & the book. Well done Peggy & Nigel.

If you google Sandy Denny and Spice Girls you come up with this:

"The Spice Girls’ song “The Lady is a Vamp” accidentally namechecks Sandy Denny. The CD lyric sheet refers to “Sandy Denny, summer love” rather than “Sandy and Danny, summer love”."

It is rather marvellous - I'll try to do a review soon-ish.  Lots of rare and hard-to-come-by stuff in amongst lots of stuff that FC/Tull fans will already have.  Not to mention lots of work with other bands - some of which you'll only be aware of if you're a full-on DP completist.

I didn't order until I knew the setlist, but ended up getting it from amazon for 27 quid or thereabouts.

It came today, and I'm pretty pleased with it - the book is good, if a little cluttered, but the music speaks for itself... Only done two CDs so far, but thoroughly enjoyed them. A real mix, but generally in the folkier direction.

Although it arrived a couple of weeks ago, so far I only managed to listen to CD 1 and the bonus one.
However, CD 1 had 3 rounds so far.
The astonishing thing I find with it, is that despite this compilation of various groups and stretching over years and years, it sounds homogeneous (not to be mistaken with dull or boring). So, a selection job well done and it reveils even more a constant line of musicianship / work.
Hope to get to the other CDs soonest.

Peter

I love this compilation, because there are so many different bands/styles/musical together.
And Nigel's book is a good read.

'Polly On The Shore' from the Box set on the free CD from 'The Word' (Sept. Edition). In the summary of the tracks ,there is a picture of Dave Pegg and they credit him with the vocals. I think it's Simon though.
Brilliant track with Peggy's arrangement & music.
On a par with the 9 version with Trevor Lucas.

In October's Edition of 'The Word' , Box of Pegg's has a review as part of a 3-set piece on 'Mothership Fairport',

All you ever need from Peggy was the conclusion!

Having listened to this once through on the mobile audio device and with no track listing to hand, I can safely say that the set represents excellent value.  Great to hear some of the Dan Ar Bras pieces I recall from Cropredy 88(?), plus the excellent version of RT's "Let it Flow" (FPB would have benefited from the electric approach), some great 1985 onwards FC tracks etc etc.  Must sit down with the booklet now.

The JT version of Jams O'Donnell's Jigs is not a patch on the metal version FC played c. 1989 or so - perhaps someone should compile FC - The Metal Years??

Staggeringly good version of Sloth on disc 3.  One of the very best Sloths ever.  If you're a major Sloth-head, you're going to need to hear this version.  It's by the Rising For The Moon lineup (with Bruce).  Really clean and punch.  Swarb sings it with great subtlety, and Jerry and Peggy really shine on their instruments.

I know that the Sloth isn't exactly an endangered species out there in the Fairport racks, but this one is a very handsome specimen!

I bought "A Box of Pegg's" from http://www.zavvi.co.uk for £24.00

Wow, that's cheap?  How come's it's selling for so little now?  I see the likes of Cropredy Capers (which I still need to get) are still at a much higher price.

 ???
