Title: Real anorak question....
Post by: Nic O on April 16, 2007, 02:31:44 PM
Can anyone help with this trainspotting query?

On the mono photo of the band on the inside sleeve of Fairport Convention (first album) aside from being reminded how gorgeous Judy Dyble was (sorry, is) .... there are two guitars in the foreground . The right hand one appears to be a Gibson Les Paul (though think Richard mainly played a Gibson 335 back then).  But what is the right hand one? From its shape it seems to be Fender Jazzmaster ... but was it? And if so, whose guitar was it? Richard?

It is at times like these you need a real gear head like Maart!   ::) ::)

Didn't they hire some guitars for specific tracks on that album?

True .... there's also a pic of Simon playing a Telecaster ... and from his own account Simon didn't get his own Telecaster until a couple of years later.

Did Martin always use the same sparkle Ludwig kit, or did he use other drums for studio work?

Like to have a look at that photo...didn't realize the first album had a gatefold sleeve? Is there any other photos of RT with a 335? Can someone scan one in?
Cheers,
Slippy :o :o

Dunno about the LP - but the CD has a multi page sleeve!!!!

RT is playing what is surely a 335 (or similar) in two of the colour pix

I'm fairly sure the highly decorated guitar was Richard's. But I could be wrong, and I don't know what make or model they were (sorry!) but it was a photo taken at the Savile Theatre, October 1st 1967. On the same bill were the Floyd, Tomorrow (with Keith West) and the ISB. We were at the bottom of this list!
I am certain of this because the dress that I am wearing was hired for that particular gig. It was early on in the career so all guitars were Simon's or Richard's. Ashley is holding my autoharp and appears to be growing out of Richard's head.... Beautifully un-posed....

I'm not being much help here, am I? ::) :D

Is there a scan of this picture available anywhere?

If I can find the copy of that particular CD reissue, I'll scratch my head and get back to you. RT and I didn't have a huge arsenal of guitars to mix'n'match on: they tended to just be replaced one at a time. And Nic is wrong about my not having a Tele early on: I imagine he's remembering me describing changing to one when Richard left after Full House. As you'll see in the BBC box set one of the Speakeasy snaps of me and her Dybleness has her with the electric Autoharp and me with a highly desirable (and brand spanking new) maple-necked hi-gloss black item with white purfling purchased from Chappell Music for the princely sum of £150 as a special personal import. How posh is that!

Good work! They didn't only hire guitars, they hired frocks.  ;D

Looked at the pix again - on digital.

I take back the Les Paul and 335 references - think I was off-beam totally. It appears RT may well be playing a Les Paul, BUT the guitar in the group pic looks like a Gibson 400 Special - the tailpiece, body etc all seem to fit. That would have been some guitar to have owned in 1967!

But still puzzled about the highly decorated Fender
