Title: Nearly Fairport's second female singer!
Post by: Edthefolkie on May 04, 2007, 11:33:25 PM
Don't know if anybody goes back this far, but the photo is of Peter Bellamy, Heather Wood and Royston Wood.

Heather was approached to join Fairport but she suggested Sandy Denny instead! Well that's one version of the story......

I have never seen this shot of the Young Tradition before - it's brilliant. The photo was taken by Jean Ritchie's husband at a US festival around 1968. Cool gear eh - bet you didn't think folkies could look like that!

There is another Fairport connection - Jean Ritchie, who is a lovely singer from Appalachia, sang Matty Groves and the band got it from either Jean's or Hedy West's singing.

See Jean's site http://www.jeanritchie.com/ - there are some splendid pictures in George Pickow's Performers Gallery.

Cheers - Ed

From the days when a shirt was really a SHIRT.  Glory days indeed...   ;)

Another connection being Royston Wood, of course, who sang with the Albions and with Richard & Linda.
