Title: Full house lineup live 1970 clips on youtube
Post by: NeilMcLaughlin on June 14, 2007, 03:31:33 PM
If you go to youtube and search Fairport Convention 1970, you'll find some recently
added clips, you'll find Sloth, Journeyman's Grace, Dirty Linen and Sir B.  Great stuff!

Oh my goodness!!  I've just watched the Journeyman's Grace clip!!  It's astounding.  Really great quality (even if the cameraman does seem to aim his camera in aseemingly almost random manner) - is this from a commercial release?  Can we buy it?

RT sings the second verse!!  Swarb has a ridiculous beard!!  What more could you want?  Knocks the Angel Delight and official BBC versions into a cocked hat.

I'm off to watch Sloth.....

This is fantastic.  Did I say it was fantastic?

Jules

I will go search for this. Is it the maidstone show? If I could find a live version of Lord Marlborough on youtube, I will die a happy man.  :)

Amazing stuff....just when you think there can't be anything left in the cupboards, this little lot shows up ;D

Sloth is very inspiring- no noodling (unlike most of the versions in more recent years), just great intense, ensemble playing. I can only hope for something similar at Cropredy this year!

Dave Mattacks plays a blinder here as do the whole band....There have been several fine Fairport line-ups over the years, but I reckon the chemistry between these five players was pretty special (Richard and Swarb in particular)...witness Swarb's Full House reunion on his Smiddyburn album. Looking forward to sparks flying in August! :D

No, it is not the maidstone stuff, which is why I figured it needed brought to people's attention.  I too would be very interested in purchasing a DVD of this material if it is commercially available. If anyone does have any more info on where this came from prior to showing up on youtube, I'd love to know.

On a bit of jesting note, if they miss putting "never saw Lord Marlborough on youtube, and thus, died an unhappy man" on your tombstone (if you never do manage to see such performance) they will be missing an obvious bet,
Mindwarper.

This is seriously good. The performances are flawless, and the sound quality excellent. I can't believe I haven't heard of/seen these before. It's recorded at about the same time I first saw Fairport, and I'd love a DVD if anyone knows of its existence. It's MUCH better than the Maidstone DVD.

What´s more to say? Amazing!
While watching JG I was suddenly overwhelmed with feelings: this is what made me "fall for" the band at the beginning, although only in recorded form. 1970 I was still 4 years away from enjoying the  band live

I've been fascinated this weekend by these clips on Youtube, dirty linen, patrick spens, now be thankful.  I have watched them  over and over.

Being a newcomer to Fairport  (1998.)  I don't know a great deal about other Fairport line ups and watching this line up I have been utterly fascinated and awestruck. Dave Swarbrick, his voice is just something else and his presence?  I just don't know how to describe him??

The overall sound of this line up is so vibrant and energetic   I was 8 when all this was going on.  I feel I missed out on something very very special.

Under the counter deffo - close 'em down!

why? if it wasnt for the bootleggers all of this stuff ould be lost
now if the bands and record labels were sensible and made this stuff available then there would be no need in the first place
huzzah for the bootleggers say i

It seems the real question is the selling of this stuff, I don't know of many who have the strength of character to turn down a freebie however they may feel about bootlegging, as seen by the number who have looked at the youtube clips.

So close em down for selling and profiteering but can I have their merchandise please ;D

The man's a legend.  It's still amaxing how a somewhat short statured folk violinist joined a bunch of young rock musicians with one of the best women singers of all time, and ended up being the leader....and doing such a great job too!

Nobody sings like Sandy, but I think Swarb is, in his own way, a superb vocalist.  His work on Now Be Thankful alone is enough to secure him demigod status.

And then there's the fiddle playing.  The sound of the fiddle has always enchanted me.  I like Fairport records before he joined, but the sound of the fiddle means that I love the records with Swarb many times more.

Get buying some of the back catalogue. Full House, Angel Delight etc

I was listening to the AT2 double CD yesterday which is the 1982/3 Crops which featured Swarb post 'the temporary closure of FC' but before he took sick. The live versions of some of his best numbers sound even better than the originals. Don't know if this is still available?

Sadly both The Boot and AT2 seem to be out of print.  I have The Boot on cassette but would love both on CD.  Maybe they'll be reissued sometime....I hope so!

AT2 is (not surprisingly!) Cropredy 1982...no Thomo, but lots of lovely Trevor... It's a single tape.

1983 was released as The Boot (double tape).

There was a limited CD reissue of 1000 a few years back but they tend to go for about 40 quid a set on eBay.

Record Collector Price Guide 2008 lists the value of AT2 on tape at 20 quid and the three 2-tape sets - The Boot, The Other Boot ('86)and The Third Leg ('87) as 25 quid each....

Sian, I totally agree with you. I love looking at these old clips. I was first introduced to FC in 1990 and I've always preferred the DM, Peggy, Ric, Maart and Simon line-up thinking, perhaps a little pompously, that this was the definitive. But, the more I see of the older line-ups, the more I veer towards them. Swarb's voice, playing and indeed presence is magical. Last year at Cropredy my sister and I sat spellbound watching Swarb's Lazarus. The man is, indeed, a genius.

Sycophantic, avert eyes smiley needed  :)

The link is the current line up playing in Sydney.  This has been on YouTube for a while I believe.

However:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7HtJfi1nudM

That should be Walk Awhile from the 1970 show (hopefully...)

And thanks to whoever posted these originally, and to those on the board who brought them to my attention.  Has anyone heard of this show before? It's the first I've ever seen of it.

Yes, you got it right to the one with the Full House Lineup.  I originally put this thread on here without any url because I wanted to let anyone interested in this particular lineup realize that you could put "Fairport Convention 1970" into the youtube search and see all of these from one spot (along with maidstone stuff if
you hadn't seen those) if you are looking specifically for this line up.  A recent thing that was brought to my attention is that if you are doing a search on any group/performer on youtube, once you get there, you can sort by "recently added", which keeps you from having to wade through all the stuff you've already seen if you are just trying to find something recently posted.  I think a lot of this stuff isn't all that difficult, but sometimes some of us need a little help with it anyway.  Thanks to the gent pointing to the latest addition, and having an url for the current lineup doing the same song on the page gives an interesting comparison/contrast opportunity right at fingertips.

I still haven't really heard anyone say much about these, it is just like they mystically arrived out of thin air.  I am curious how many people knew this stuff existed before it popped up on youtube.  Simon, do you remember it?  Did you know it still existed?
