Title: More instrumentals Post by: Ollie on July 01, 2007, 02:11:12 PM I think FC should do more instrumentals in their set. What do you think? Which would you like to see revived? Which would you not like to hear? For a start, I'd like to hear Flatback Caper, Jenny's Chickens/Mason's Apron, The Youngest Daughter and Fiddlestix, but I think I've had enough of Canny Capers

Title: Re: More instrumentals Post by: Mix (Mic) on July 01, 2007, 02:33:52 PM Portmeirion and Some Special Place for me please :)
Title: Re: More instrumentals Post by: Goaty on July 01, 2007, 02:35:32 PM Anything but Portmeirion, it's not that I don't like it, it just takes me to a place I'd rather not be :-[
Title: Re: More instrumentals Post by: Mix (Mic) on July 01, 2007, 02:37:29 PM Likewise Some Special Place for me Ewen :'( But I still can't resist listening to it!
I'll bring the tissues :) Title: Re: More instrumentals Post by: Goaty on July 01, 2007, 02:39:30 PM Likewise Some Special Place for me Ewen :'( But I still can't resist listening to it! Title: Re: More instrumentals Post by: Dr Monk on July 01, 2007, 02:41:42 PM I would particularly like to see Flatback Caper and some of the earlier instrumentals played at Cropredy. With Swarb no longer singing, and Trevor and Sandy gone, these are some of the few times you get to see tunes from the early albums played by the line-up that recorded them. (Which is not to say I don't love to see Chris's While and Leslie singing - I love hearing both) And apart from the anorak reason - they're some of my favourite tracks! Triple ply coming up :-* Title: Re: More instrumentals Post by: Greg on July 01, 2007, 06:17:22 PM It would probably need some rearranging but I'd love to hear Surfeit of Lamphreys, one of my all time favourite Fairport recordings. Royal Seleccion (spelling???) has always been a favourite of mine, and maybe a run through Mr Sands Is In The Building.
Title: Re: More instrumentals Post by: mikeatlargue on July 01, 2007, 07:43:29 PM I'd love to hear them do Si Bheag Si Mhor again. I know Simon likes it as he quoted "it's one to get lost in" They featured it regularly in the late 80s/early 90s but they haven't done it since then as far as I'm aware.
I love the longer stuff - this and Sloth as examples - do they leave them out because they would take out 2/3 songs, do you reckon? They must do Sloth at Cropredy this year - PLEASE everyone agree with me!!! And we must get MG twice this year? Title: Re: More instrumentals Post by: Mix (Mic) on July 01, 2007, 07:54:54 PM Yes and yes..... I agree with you ;D ;D
Title: Re: More instrumentals Post by: Amethyst (Jenny) on July 01, 2007, 07:59:48 PM Bridge over the River Ashe please.. or maybe Cherwell even. ;D
Title: Re: More instrumentals Post by: Ollie on July 01, 2007, 09:39:11 PM I'd quite like to hear Sir B again. Gawd knows how long that's been out of the repertoire...
Title: Re: More instrumentals Post by: the beat goes on on July 02, 2007, 09:22:44 AM What are the odds of M1 breakdown being revived?
Title: Re: More instrumentals Post by: Greg on July 02, 2007, 09:23:11 AM Ooh, and Jams O'Donnel's Jig... and the Brilliance Medley/Cherokee Shuffle... and Con Casey's Jig/Tripping Up The Stairs...
I could be here a while actually.... :) Title: Re: More instrumentals Post by: PLW (Peter) on July 02, 2007, 09:26:48 AM Bridge over the River Ashe please.. or maybe Cherwell even. ;D How about Bridge Over the River Ash with mssrs Leslie, Sanders, Swarbrick (and Beer and Lakeman if they are still on site)? Title: Re: More instrumentals Post by: PaulT on July 02, 2007, 11:57:10 AM & SN on Viola, Peggy on fiddle, DM on bass.
Title: Re: More instrumentals Post by: Bridgwit (Bridget) on July 02, 2007, 12:01:38 PM Surfeit of Lamphreys please!!
Double whammey - great FC instrumental and Maart to boot. :) :) Title: Re: More instrumentals Post by: Polly Oxford (Andie) on July 02, 2007, 01:55:46 PM Quote How about Bridge Over the River Ash with mssrs Leslie, Sanders, Swarbrick (and Beer and Lakeman if they are still on site)? Title: Re: More instrumentals Post by: David W on July 02, 2007, 02:42:38 PM beefy bass lines, huge power chords, soaring fiddle parts all underpinned by fantastic drumming - give me Jam's O'Donnells or Fiddlestix any time over Ric's twee instrumental noodlings.
Jackdaw ;) Title: Re: More instrumentals Post by: Jules Gray on July 02, 2007, 02:53:19 PM I tend to prefer the songs with vocals myself. Many of the instrumentals all blur into one for me. The main exceptions being the haunting and beautiful Battle Of The Somme, and the instrumentals which lead into Ye Mariners All....and that's because they do indeed lead into Ye Mariners All!
Jules Title: Re: More instrumentals Post by: Polly Oxford (Andie) on July 02, 2007, 02:57:22 PM Battle Of The Somme - isn't that Albions rather than FC? -please can someone remind me what it's on? I do love it to pieces on several versions though, am I just confusing easily?

But sir b mckenzie, royal section, and dirty linen all are great as well. Title: Re: More instrumentals Post by: Pat Helms on July 02, 2007, 07:33:58 PM They must do Sloth at Cropredy this year - PLEASE everyone agree with me!!! For them to omit Sloth in an anniversary year would be quite a shock! I wouldn't be too worried about it. However, this should be the year for A Sailors Life though! Its been 20 years (hard to believe!) and its time has come. Chris would give it the justice it deserves! While or Leslie? i think id prefer barow in furness's finest just dont let that tuneless tabor woman near it although if there was any justice she should have been tarred, feathered and run out of town in 87 Title: Re: More instrumentals Post by: Pat Helms on July 03, 2007, 05:13:51 PM While, please!
But you're right, Jim. I'd rather hear Slim Pickens (freshly risen from the grave) give it a try, than have Ms. Tabor attempt a reprise. I know someone said it was due, unfortunately, to a poor monitor mix on stage, but lightning CAN strike twice!! Its just not worth the risk. People's lives are at stake! ;) Title: Re: More instrumentals Post by: Jack O Diamonds on July 04, 2007, 12:16:49 AM They must do Sloth at Cropredy this year - PLEASE everyone agree with me!!! Title: Re: More instrumentals Post by: Chris on July 05, 2007, 10:04:09 AM Oh, I think he can do that if he wishes, can't you, Jack?!
In fact, I seem to recall that it has appeared before, some years ago. Title: Re: More instrumentals Post by: Staffan on July 05, 2007, 10:28:37 AM "Flatback Caper".
Or if our friends on stage want to keep the instrumentals short and concise- so we can have a magnificent "Sloth" - I'm very fond of the little nice "Peggy's Pub" , which, I believe has got an outing in the Peggy/PJ context? Title: Re: More instrumentals Post by: Staffan on July 06, 2007, 09:03:51 AM Come to think of it: now when there´s a number of brilliant guitar players at Cropredy, why not play "Hanks For The Memory" as a reminder of what musical context the early Fairport-would-be grew out of?
Title: Re: More instrumentals Post by: BPTNT on July 06, 2007, 03:10:24 PM Anything from the Full House reunion on Smiddyburn and Flittin' would make me very happy :)
