Title: More Please
Post by: Neil on July 02, 2007, 06:02:23 PM
So after taking the negative route what are the top songs you never get tired of and why?

For me:

Bring Em Down
Sloth
Spanish Main
Widow of Westmoreland
Suzanne

Just about sums up the Fairport canon for me from gentle introspective songs to experimental journeys via trad, who really needs more.

Really hard if not impossible.
So, just a spontaneous, momentary selection and in no particular order:
- Hiring Fair (just listen to the subtle guitar lines for instance on the OldNewBorrowedBlue album)
- Hexhamshire Lass
- Spring Song (yes, the very one)
- Rosie
- Walk Awhile

dear me, this could go on...

More surprises please would be my vote! Stuff that doesn't get wheeled out very often (Or at all!), combinations of people doing songs not necessarily from their era. I don't mind recent stuff, some of it is very good BUT the very special 40th anniversary event is not the time for it, this year I want to wallow in delights  :o

Any of those fab trad arr songs that Swarb ripped through, stuff like:

Hexhamshire Lass
Widow of Westmoreland
Jack O Rion

those would do me well

In no particular order:

The Ballad of Easy Rider (has that ever been played live?)
Lalla Rookh
Wizard of the Worldly Game
The Eynsham Poacher
Nottamun Town
Seventeen Come Sunday
Rising for the Moon
Sigh Beag Sigh Mor
Reno, Nevada
The Wounded Whale
She's Like The Swallow
The Islands
Dark Eyed Molly
After Halloween
The Golden Glove

That'll probably do for now - could make an interesting set list out of that!  I'm sure there are plenty of others too that could be added.

They played it at the L&L showcase gig at the Albert Hall I believe.  And possibly other shows from that era.

Oh yes please to Dark-eyed Molly and quickly off the top of my head:
                        Sloth
                        Nottamun Town
                        Spanish Main
                        A Sailor's Life

and almost any of the trad. instrumentals

For the 40th anniversary, I wish they would devote some extra time to Fairport 67, as I always wanted to hear their version of East-West (or is it Chilli Beans/Warm Nights), Crucifixion and It's Alright Ma, It's Only Witchcraft.

I wasn't thinking just about the vocals, but also all the little instrumental parts on the Fairport version were written by Swarb, and are very much in his style.  It's really a Swarb showcase, and I'm not sure anyone else could tackle the song as essayed on Tipplers Tales.  Of course Swarb will be there, but I can't see him volunteering to just play the fiddle on a song for which he once played such a central role.

Of course anyone could play the song in a different arrangement, but I thought Swarb's arrangement for Tipplers Tales was breathtakingly good.

I´m a bit confused if we´re talking of songs we never tire of and/or want to hear at Cropredy this year, but while some of the last posts have been in the vicinity of the late 70´s Swarb-Simon-Peggy-Bruce line -up I would very much like Simon to give "The Poor Ditching Boy" a go in August. He had a nice edge to his voice in the 70´s. His voice has mellowed and matured but if it´s still within his vocal range, I loved that version.
Are we talking of songs we never tire of in a broader sense (but still want to hear in August) here come a few:
One sure thing
Fotheringay
Genesis Hall
Crazy Man Michael
Sloth
Banks of Sweet Primroses (1971)
I Was Sixteen/John My Son
To Althea From Prison
White Dress
When First Unto This Country
TPDB
Hiring Fair
Hanks For The Memory
Rosemary´s Sister
Jewel In The Crown
The Deserter (Richards)
Im Already There
Some Special Place
Keep on Turning The Wheel

Bird on a Mountain - the current line-up would do it really well, especially with Chris singing (no offence to Peggy). Kinda reminds me of Spring Song....

Hopefully, FC film this 40th cropredy and release a dvd. Knowing that, they delve deep in the songbook and play songs that make everyone laugh, cry, and dance. World peace ensues and a wonderful time is had by all. The dvd becomes #1 on amazon and the world is a better place.

Seriously, I want Lord Marlborough and the spanish main.  Pretty please.

I suspect one was recording clips for the BBC website. The other two, I think, were personal. But would have been approved by the BBC, for sure.

No, not really - apart from to repeat that you were wrong - there were definitely 'stealth' recordings made of the set.

I think the cameras talked about were actually in the photography pit, for which you have to have a special pass for. Hardly stealth then.

There were several video cameras being used most of the the festival in the public areas.
The rest of us were referring to the absence / presence of video cameras in the pit area, for which authorisation would definitely have been needed. From the BBC no less for the Liege & Lief set.

I was in the front row on both Friday and Saturday nights and don't remember there being any notably sized video equipment on the Friday night, although tbh I was so engrossed in the set I wasn't really paying attention to much else. Saturday of course had a couple of camera guys either side on the stage itself and the two monsters in the pit, which I understood were for the DVD. :)

Those on Friday were hand-held, which is why I said I thought they were for personal use only.
