Title: Posting Links Post by: YaBB Master (Colin) on July 19, 2007, 10:56:30 AM There aren't any rules about posting links on this board, but please don't post only a link.
With the link there must be some explanation of what you are being directed to and why you would want to go there. For example it's not enough to post in Announce "Have a look at my web site here". The post should explain who you are and why it's relevant. Also don't just post a link to YouTube etc, without some information about what's there. This is a discussion board. Title: Re: Posting Links Post by: Nick on November 01, 2007, 10:27:40 PM It's taken a while to find the post that makes your post make sense Puggs. Since its in the Arms though I won't link to it from here.
There aren't any rules regarding hot links. There are some actions though. When you put a link to something on someone else's website, that someone else gets to hear about it each time that link is activated. In your case you put a link to an image into a post on Talkawhile. Then, every time someone looked at the Talkawhile thread, the link to that image was activated so that the image could be displayed. The person (or software) on the other end of the link will have noticed the repeated activity from Talkawhile and chosen to do something about it. Since it was a picture it's owner has probably set things up so that one or two views are allowed but repeated views become blocked. You would have to pay a royalty or get some other agreement to persuade the picture owner to let you see the image unblocked. This is why Yabb has often said please avoid hotlinks as they may end up being blocked. Since the requests to show the link come from Talkawhile this sort of thing might earn Talkawhile a bad name in the net community and that would not be a good thing. This sort of thing also happens a lot with people's avatar pictures. It is why Yabb says 'send us a copy of your picture and let us host it.' Otherwise you run the risk of the picture turning into a small rectangle with an X in it. Cheers Nick Title: Re: Posting Links Post by: Pugwash on November 01, 2007, 10:30:45 PM Aha! Beggin' y' pardon an' all, but If anyone is able to translate this, I'd be mighty grateful. I know what a hyperlink does, but I got lost after that! :-[ Title: Re: Posting Links Post by: Andy on September 26, 2008, 10:37:39 AM See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBCode
HTH Title: Re: Posting Links Post by: Nick on September 26, 2008, 10:59:08 AM BBC stands for Bulletin Board Code.
It is the set of things in square brackets that get put in your posts to change the way they look - make things bold, italic, etc. They're written in when you click on the various buttons above the space where you write your messages. There's one code in particular - [url ] - which causes text to be treated as a hyperlink, that you can click on to go to another web page. This is the code that's being talked about here. Until recently you didn't need to put the URL code into your posts to make a hyperlink. Previously you could just put the link. The board would find text beginning with "HTTP://" and automatically make it a hyperlink. However, someone has found that this is a security risk and so the board no longer does this automatic link creating. So now, if you want a link, you have to put the URL codes there yourself. It's quite easy to do. Just select the text of the link in your message and then click on the button with a Globe on it. What about the hacking HTML - this sounds bad, what does it mean? I looked it up but couldn't make head nor tail of it, the pages were long and in a funny language, can it be explained to a five year old child in one sentence? Then I might get it. (I even had to look up HTH, either you mean Hope This Helps or How The Hell ;D) edited to add, Ah Nick, you beat me to the post - thanks! The button just does the typing for you. Somebody found that you could embed all sorts of complex HTML into a link. |
