Hi all, I'm a long time reader of the forum, but a newbie to posting. On January 13 I am getting married. We both like so many different kinds of music that we are trying to represent most of it. I was just curious what, if any Fairport anyone here may have played at their own weddings? We chose two, maybe slightly odd choices in The Happy Man (it's joy of life and drinking!) and for the FINAL song of the evening, Best Wishes, because its a great thank you to all the people travelling (some very far)to our wedding.
Mind you, I could have done an all Fairport set, but.....compromises must be made! Cheers!

Well my daughter ended her evening with MOTL, because such a momentous occasion amongst real friends has to!  {:-)

A friend of mine was hired as a DJ for a wedding a few years ago and came to me for suggestions for a waltz. I suggested White Dress and it worked perfectly.

At my wedding back in '03 we had our wedding band play "Madeline" with the singer substituting my wife's name "Andrea." Of course no one in attendence (except for us) had a clue what the tune was. Laking a fiddle player, a saxophone played the fiddle melody. Though the band was quite excellent, this was a bit of a mistake. Luckily it's only a 3 minute song.

"Sloth" would've been a real problem :)

Yah... "the wheel" certain conjures up images of marital bliss  :o

The 'in the immediate future' Mrs. Lysander strolled down the aisle to the strains of MOTL, climaxing (if you'll pardon the expression) as the refrain began, with her meeting me at the steps of the chancel (the ledge). We signed the register accompanied by Portmeirion and departed the church as man and better half, to the dulcet tones of Mock Morris.

Most of the guests didn't understand  ::)

Haste to the Wedding?

I recall someone on here saying they had it played as guests arrived at their church service and thinking that was a top idea.

I am not allowed to comment - I am married, after all  :-X

When Fairport played at our wedding in 2003, Come Haste did have a rather special ring to it. So I'd be voting for that one (well, Royal Seleccion #13 it's called on albums). Now Be Thankful? Mmmm. Well it wasn't played at our wedding. Curiously only at the soundcheck  ::)

That was my wedding - we didn't actually have it played, but my sister sang it (without the assistance of helium!) at the reception.  Unknown to me, my brother-in-law had printed off the words & pinned them to the lych-gate, so all the guests saw them on the way in.

I got the idea from a sleevenote on an English Country Band CD - traditionally, the tune was played by the church band (in pre-organ days) as the bride arrived; this was definitely the case in the Bishops Cleeve area, but I don't know if it occurred elsewhere.

Interesting choices all, and some of them were considered-White Dress, Who Knows, Madeleine, Royal Seleccion but dropped for various reasons. For the waltz, I forgot that we are doing Like An Old Fashioned Waltz, but also up for consideration were Widow of Westmorland's Daughter,Walk Awhile,Portmeirion, The Rose Hip,John Gaudie,Close To You,
and Rosie. The thing I'm noticing though is people are picking what's special for them, regardless of what the guests may think!

"Widow of Westmoreland's Daughter" - just don't introduce it to any aged relatives with Swarb's gag at the White Bear, following Simon's admonition not to take notice of any gynaecological advice in the song...

"Have you heard about the gynaecologist who papered his hall through the letterbox?"

Rarely do I pass through Maidenhead (oo-er) without thinking of this line...

We chose Portmeirion for our wedding music.

Perfect music for our perfect day.

"The Prisoner" was filmed in Portmeirion.  

Some might therefore say - how very appropriate for a wedding...

Well,not a fairport track but my wife walked in to Swarbs 'I left my heart in New South Wales ' but apparently you have to wait 2 mins 28 secs before the rythms ok to walk to! but a fabby piece of music and everyone loved it

Well, 9 days to go now until the big day, and I just wanted to thank everyone for their replies! For the record, we chose Happy Man, Best Wishes, Like An Old Fashioned Waltz, and the Shannon Bells medley from Swarbrick 2 as our Fairport and friends selections. Now, once the wedding is over, and after the flight to Ireland for the honeymoon, the real musical party will start, hopefully involving barrelfulls of Guinness and some good seisuns at the pubs in Donegal where we are staying! Wish me luck folks!
