Title: Jimmy Cliff
Post by: Tasha on October 09, 2006, 09:16:46 AM
Peggy, I’ve recently read a very interesting book called Brum Rocked on about the history of Birmingham’s rock scene. I have a vested interest as my parents are from there and went to many of the clubs at that time!  ;) Anyway you are mentioned in the book a fair few times and I was particularly interested in the story about when you put Jimmy Cliff up at your parents place and he walked down to Breakfast on his hands :o :o Have you ever played with him since and have you kept in touch with him? He seems to be a guy of great integrity.
Thanks.

Hi Tasha, yes Jimmy stayed at our house and is a great chap. I nearly met up with him when he played womad festival about 3 years ago. My daughter stephanie was the public relations director for Womad and she mentioned to her boss that I had played with Jimmy in his first english band.  He said "Let's get your dad to introduce him" I was honoured and a little nervous to be honest. I turned up at the festival and got all the right passes and was told to be at the side of the stage 5 mins before Jimmy was to go on. I thought to myself, hang on a minute what if Jimmy freaks when he sees me ( I had long hair when I was 19!) or worse still doesn't remember or recognise me. I asked Steph to call him at his hotel so I could alert him to what was gonna happen. Jimmy was overjoyed to chat on the phone and really looking to us meeting up. Imagine my feelings when arriving at the stage after worrying what I would say for the intro I was confronted by a big security guy who was just not gonna let me on the stage despite  Steph. and me explaining that I was expected to do the intro. So , like the well mannered nice guy I am, I exited the site as quickly as possible. Well I would have had my car not been broken into in the artists car park. So much for womad and festival organisation. The shops were good there and nice flags too. So < Hope this answers your question. Cheers, Peggy.
