Title: Swarb with A.L. Lloyd
Post by: Mindwarper on February 01, 2008, 06:15:40 PM
Hi,

I am a fan from the USA. Thank you for taking time to chat with us. I love old seafaring songs and you appear on many. With Louis Killen on Goodbye, Fare Thee Well. With Ian Campbell on Lowlands Low. With Martin Carthy on Polly on the Shore. The many Fairport seafaring songs. There are lot of  examples.

But some of my favorites are with A.L Lloyd, specifically the Song "The Bonny Ship The Diamond" It is such a robust song. I believe you were on his last lp "The Great Australian Legend
A Panorama of Bush Balladry and Song" that also featured future Fairporter Trevor Lucas. Lloyd narrated on Babacombe Lee. I am amazed that you show up on many old recording. Did you ever sleep ? :)

I guess my question is were you drawn to seafaring music?  Did you and Bert Lloyd play live? Do you have  unreleased tracks? Any stories or memories from that era? Anything on the Bonny Ship session?

Thank you for all the good tunes.

Michael Gardner

thats a lot of questions but i will try ,yes we played live many times, too many stories to relate and fingers not up to typing for a long time etc. I am drawn to sea songs as was he. Later in the yr there may be a suprise for you that i am unable to talk about now. bert and i despite the age difference were good pals, mabe because of the age difference,    he treated me most kindly etc and of course to work with him was a joy.to be privy to his thoughts and to be guided by him was special. the list of songs he gave to us all is enless   SOVAY,BONNY BLACK HARE, THREE DRUNKEN MAIDENS,REYNARDINE,BYKER HILL. TO NAME ONLY A FEW. swarb
