Title: Isle of Wight Folk & Blues Festival 2007 Post by: JohnT on May 09, 2008, 12:44:47 PM Interesting article just on Radio 4's 'You & Yours' - regarding last year's Jazz and Folk & Blues festivals, and the fact that many of the artists (especially those at the F&B) have still not been paid!
Brief interviews with "Fairport Convention Leader" Dave Pegg; Musicians Union man; ? from 'The Hamsters' and one of the festival organisers - lots of talk and excuses from the latter, but no actual answers as to when people might be paid. But she seemed unapologetic about the fact that the people who had generated that business (ie the performers) hadn't been paid. What a disgrace!

Title: Re: Isle of Wight Folk & Blues Festival 2007 Post by: Waterloo Wonderer on May 09, 2008, 04:03:04 PM Have the organisers not heard of insurance. Will anyone want to perform at the Festival after hearing the spokeswoman on National Radio.
How dare people want paying for their labours. After listening its an awful headline but quite frankly it sounded like An Isle of Wightwash. However there may be a lesson for all festival organisers as in these days of economic uncertainty how long will it be before organisers of a festival are made bankrupt. Title: Re: Isle of Wight Folk & Blues Festival 2007 Post by: Simon Withers on May 09, 2008, 04:45:31 PM ......But will give give a direct answer yes or no, will the musician's be paid?
like blood from a stone, the lady organiser/spokeswoman can not be proud of herself as to how she came across during the radio interview. I'd certainly not wish to support her enterprises - can not someone else take over the event by demonstrating lack of confidence in the current ownership? They will do more damage to the Isle of Wight's economy if they keep this up. They already have. Its also amazing how many festivals run close to the wind or at a constant loss, and I am not just talking about small festivals here but some big name events constantly running at several tens of thousand of pounds loss. The organisers just carry the burden with overdrafts and mortgages. Glastonbury ran at a loss for the first fifteen or so years of its existence. However, rule number one is pay the artists and suppliers first, then negotiate with the rest.
