Title: RT at Brampton
Post by: ColinB on July 21, 2008, 10:17:21 AM
A fine set from Mr Thompson at the Brampton Festival last night. I caught the end of Chumbawamba who sounded rather good and I started the evening with the Uke Orch of GB. Their version of Anarchy in the UK is something else!

RT's voice sounded a bit rough on some of the lower notes - either that or there were gremlins in the PA - but his guitar playing was as good as ever. Set list included One Door Opens, Crawl Back, Walking on a Wire, Hot For The Smarts, Dad's Gonna Kill Me, 1952 VBL, Johnny's Far Away, Bright Lights, Drunkards, WKWTTG, She Twists the Knife Again, Woods of Darney, Bathsheba Smiles, Cooksferry Queen, Beeswing, Valerie and Wall of Death.

It might have but it's all under cover at Brampton. We managed to get seats quite near the front as some Cumba fans only listened to his first 2 or 3 songs and then left. Their loss was our gain.

I think we were sitting just along from Maddy Prior. Not seen her up close before so I'm not 100% sure but she disppeared backstage at the end so it was probably her.

BTW, isn't RT playing at Cropredy this year? There's no mention of it on his web site. But I see he's playing at the Thirsty Ear Festival in Santa Fe at the end of August. What a great name for a festival!  8)

He's not on the list for Crops. In fact he's in Spain on the Wednesday, but is due in the UK by the 16th...

...so you never know, he may be a special guest on Saturday night.

Er, yes. But he's in Spain on the 6th and then next gig is the 16th, in the UK. Sorry if I was unclear.

I'm sure I read somewhere that he dropped a heavy hint at a recent gig that he will be at Cropredy.

Personally I will be quite surprised. He doesn't often do two in a row.

As I'm not coming to Cropredy I'm not too bothered. But he was on good form dealing with hecklers - " are you talking to me?"   ;D

He did a nice bit talking about Sandy Denny comparing her to how Nick Drake has had his songs used on TV and how he's helping to keep Sandy's name alive.

Yes. At his gig in Camden, Maine, July 1.....while introducing WKWTTG as a tribute to Sandy he alluded to singing it this August at a "field in Oxfordshire"! Paul and some other friends had the impression he caught himself just in time to not say Cropredy and thus make an announcement of his participation.

There's going to be some sort of a tribute to Sandy so I suspect he's involved in that.

I'd be surprised if he wasn't. He'd better not bring rain tho!  :)

Did it rain in Brampton? - Abso-bloody-lutely, but by Sunday it had worn off, and Sunday night when RT was on, it had cleared up nicely.
