Title: Leslie sings Denny
Post by: Dr Monk on September 01, 2008, 05:21:41 PM
Chris has always been a fairly natural fit for Swarb's vocal parts, mainly due to his similar range, but Iremember remarking ages ago that I'd like to hear him give some of Sandy's songs a bash.

Since that then he's performed Tam Lin, which sadly I've yet to hear, and Reynardine, which I love.

Are there are any othe Sandy songs that we think might suit Chris?
Personally I'd love to hear him sing Rising for the Moon.

I always prefer to hear Sandy's songs interpreted rather than imitated - one of the reasons I think Chris While's more bluesy voice has given some of her songs new life, and why Chris, Simon and RT are all interesting to hear doing her songs.

Are there any other male singers that we think might do some of her tunes particular justice?

(To avoid Gower Flower's wrath perhaps we should avoid doing this as lists!)

PJ Wright does a fabulous version of Bushes and Briars

I really like Swarb's reading of "It Suits Me Well".

Not strictly a Sandy song, but I'd like to hear Chris L sing "I'll Keep it With Mine"

I'd like to hear Chris do that. Come All Ye? Autopsy? Perhaps Quiet Joys as well?

Farewell Farewell?

I think Chris could easily do Bushes and Briars.

Ha ha! Some lists are less irritating than others, Dr Monk. 8)

I think Chris would make a fine job of singing Loving Hannah, and possibly When First To This Country as well. :D

Phew! When I saw the title of this thread, I thought it referred to our very own Andy Leslie; now, I've never heard AL sing, but I got a mental pic of said gent in a long blonde wig warbling WKWTTG. I think I need a lie down and a large glass of Laphroaig.

(Sorry Andy!)

Back on topic - I'd like to hear the current line-up have a go at Rising... Chris' voice would be ideal for lead, with SN/DP (&GC?) on harmony vocs.

Please dont let Chris anywhere near Sailors Life --- but he`s free to do anything else he pleases . .  [;-)
Thinking about it ---I dont think anyone is capable of doing a remake of Sailors Life . Opinions please  [;-)

Huh? What about June Tabor!??  ;) ;)

Seriously, Chris While would do it with ease ... I mean it's not really a vocalist's piece (as FC did it ... ). Yeh, Sandy made it one, but ... let's face it: she was only in the first half of the thing ...  :)

Hmm. I'd LIKE to disagree with you - but somehow know where you're coming from

I think the folk tradition is always about re-interpreting and re-imagining songs and I don't like to think of anything as sacred.

That said, some recordings do have a certain air about them that are pretty hard to match and are as much about the sound as the arrangements. Sailors Life works with it's tinny telephone mic as a violin pickup and the gradual building of electric guitars thruogh old valve amps just as the feel of Exile on Main Street seems never to have been recaptured live and some things just sound better on vinyl (and age wise I'm deifnitely of the CD generation).

Perhaps re-doing older songs from the repertoire has to also be about re-interpreting rather than just doing them with a different singer. Something like sailor's life could work if really approached from a different angle, but the magic of the Unhalfbricking version woud be pretty hard to recpature if that arrangement were followed as is.

Love Ollie's idea of hearing the chaps do Quiet Joys btw.

I suppose in a sense he already has. He sang backing vocals to Sandy on her Gold Dust album. Normally I don't like posthumous remixes, but that one works pretty well for me.
