Title: Cropredy 2009 - First Band! Post by: Chris on September 07, 2008, 09:55:28 PM I know this is stupidly early, but I picked up a newsletter this weekend that clearly states this band have been booked for Cropredy 2009 - apparently Peggy saw them somewhere in France & loved them....
The band? Churchfitters (http://www.churchfitters.com/ehome.php) A big quote on their myspace site From Peggy - "I knew as soon as I saw Boris's instruments that the Churchfitters were going to be interesting. However, on watching their set I can honestly say that they are the most musically inventive quartet that I have seen in decades. They received a standing ovation from the festival. Go and see them and you will understand why. A must." DAVE PEGG, FAIRPORT CONVENTION AND CROPREDY FESTIVAL" Title: Re: Cropredy 2009 - First Band! Post by: Ollie on September 07, 2008, 10:03:59 PM Just youtubed them. They look really good. Just realised that they were part of the interval music at Shrewsbury. Here's their great version of South Australia - http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=pgUuoch3vis&feature=related
Title: Re: Cropredy 2009 - First Band! Post by: Jan_ on September 07, 2008, 10:14:36 PM I saw them about a year ago at Colchester - the place was packed. They were very exciting, quite Bretonish. We bought a couple of CDs - time to have another listen, I think.
Title: Re: Cropredy 2009 - First Band! Post by: Nick Reg on September 07, 2008, 10:21:06 PM They're listed to play at Biddulph FC very shortly. The next season also includes Iain Matthews , Boo, Megson, Julie Fowlis, Vin Garbutt and several more . Looking good.
Title: Re: Cropredy 2009 - First Band! Post by: Malcolm on September 07, 2008, 10:38:26 PM I see that they do To Althea from Prison on one of their albums. Credit card out now... :)

Title: Re: Cropredy 2009 - First Band! Post by: Dr Monk on September 08, 2008, 12:16:34 AM Just watched a vid - they look great!
The review of Fairport's Petersburg gig in the Russian paper Kommersant reports that Aquarium have been invited to play next year too. See the 'Fairport in Russia thread' for more details and a link. Title: Re: Cropredy 2009 - First Band! Post by: KascadeDan on September 08, 2008, 06:59:57 AM Wow. They are pretty amazing.
Title: Re: Cropredy 2009 - First Band! Post by: Chris on October 14, 2008, 07:21:36 PM From a Q & A on RT's website....
"I try to get to Cropredy every 2 or 3 years. The 'big' reunion years, where the vintage lineups stagger back on stage to salute the old regiment, seem to fall on the 2s and 7s, and we had a great one last year. I'll be back in 09." Title: Cropredy 2009 Post by: Trog (Iain) on January 21, 2009, 07:11:19 AM Any Idea who is playing at Croppers this year?
Title: Re: Cropredy 2009 Post by: Andy on January 21, 2009, 07:23:45 AM No-one has been announced yet, so the only certainties are Fairport and the winners of the BBC Young Folk Awards (http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/events/youngfolkaward2009/), who get offered a slot as part of their award. Not that they have to take it up, but I can't see why Megan and Joe Henwood won't be there.
There's a certain amount of expectation that Richard "Rain God" Thompson will be there as he seems to alternate years and wasn't about last year. When acts are announced, you'll seem the on this page (http://www.fairportconvention.com/cropredy_line_up.php) and no doubt discussed here. Until they are officially announced, don't get excited if an act says they'll be at Croppers as we have seen several fall by the wayside in the contractual negotiations over the years. Hope this helps. Title: Re: Cropredy 2009 - First Band! Post by: Chris on January 23, 2009, 01:53:31 PM Caught the Churchfitters last Saturday in the depths of Suffolk and a newish Arts Centre (New Cut AC) in Hailsworth....I think they'll go down very well if booked!
Infectious tunes, interesting arrangements some slightly dodgy choreography (! - a la Spinal Tap...). Different! Recommended! Title: Re: Cropredy 2009 - First Band! Post by: Bridgwit (Bridget) on January 23, 2009, 02:13:24 PM They certainly sound interesting!
I love it when the names of the bands start to come out, especially if I've not heard of them. Trawling my way around the net finding out about bands is one of the best parts. :) Roll on August! {:-) Title: Re: Cropredy 2009 - First Band! Post by: Pat Helms on January 23, 2009, 02:43:08 PM some slightly dodgy choreography (! - a la Spinal Tap...). Chris, Please be so kind as to clarify!!! All bass numbers? Giant troll props? DWARVES?!?!?! :D Title: Re: Cropredy 2009 - First Band! Post by: Sian on January 23, 2009, 02:48:14 PM Right so far that's Megan and Joe Henwood (young folk winners) Churchfitters RT ooh :) Title: Re: Cropredy 2009 Post by: Andy on January 23, 2009, 02:51:35 PM Also, see http://www.talkawhile.co.uk/yabbse/index.php?topic=29024.msg412963#msg412963
Title: Re: Cropredy 2009 - First Band! Post by: Chris on January 23, 2009, 02:52:05 PM Please be so kind as to clarify!!! All bass numbers? Giant troll props? DWARVES?!?!?! :D Not quite that severe - but over-expressed hard-rock poses for what was really only light folk-rock....brought a smile, anyway! Andy - none of these are confirmed, but I've overheard RT say he & the band are due - and there's the quote I posted above from RTs website....and the Churchfitters said that Peggy had invited them in a flyer I saw for their current tour. So at least the 'rumour' is first-hand in both cases! Title: Re: Cropredy 2009 - First Band! Post by: parkwood on January 23, 2009, 02:57:51 PM Churchfitters have been back in UK for a few weeks and are playing Colchester Arts Centre next Monday... see you there!!
Title: Re: Cropredy 2009 - First Band! Post by: Amethyst (Jenny) on January 26, 2009, 11:32:19 AM Sid Kipper has announced in his newsletter (The Trunch Trumpet) that he will be appearing at Cropredy on August 15th (I presume he means on stage).
Title: Re: Cropredy 2009 - First Band! Post by: Big Dave on January 26, 2009, 12:11:35 PM With the prospect of the new LJE album, I got to wondering what the chance of a Cropredy appearance would be?
Title: Re: Cropredy 2009 - First Band! Post by: Polly Oxford (Andie) on January 26, 2009, 02:02:23 PM - and Edward II, please, Simon and Gareth at the same festival, ooh yes....

Especially as we are away for their Feb 27th Southampton gig. Title: Re: Cropredy 2009 - First Band! Post by: PaulT on January 30, 2009, 10:09:11 AM Peggy announced last night from the stage at Tewkesbury that Richard Thompson is confirmed for Cropredy this year - I assume the Friday night, as Peggy said 14th August.
This could help manufacturers of sou'westers & galoshes to deal with the recession... ;) Title: Re: Cropredy 2009 - First Band! Post by: Keith on January 30, 2009, 01:20:55 PM Or sun hats, going by the last couple of years ;)
Mrs Keith will be going for a walk elsewhere. Title: Re: Cropredy 2009 - First Band! This could help manufacturers of sou'westers & galoshes to deal with the recession... ;) If the "Liege & Lief" line-up do play the Barbican in late July, may we be treated to a full set at Cropredy too, please? :) It was on Swarb's site. As much as I'd like to see it again at Cropredy, I doubt it will be half as exciting as it was in 2007. Is that rumoured then? Title: Re: Cropredy 2009 - First Band! Post by: Keith on January 30, 2009, 03:23:41 PM Wouldn't want to see it again - just in case it wasn't as good. But a Full House would be rather good.
Title: Re: Cropredy 2009 - First Band! Post by: GubGub (Al) on January 30, 2009, 03:25:58 PM But I guess that if they play the Barbican, they will do more than just L&L. That would be worth seeing. Otherwise 40ish minutes would be a bit short for a stand alone show.
