Title: Rebus namechecks Fairport shock! Post by: Edthefolkie on September 30, 2008, 12:38:56 PM Another literary mention for our music, following RT in High Fidelity !
The wonderful Ian Rankin has the following in the Rebus novel Exit Music ...... "Caravan"! Rebus commented. "Canterbury's finest...didn't know people still listened to them." There were other sleeves he recognised: the Fairports and Davey Graham and Pentangle. "Somebody studying archaeology?" he guessed. (Cheeky s*d - Ed) Rebus namechecks Dick Gaughan, Bert Jansch and John Renbourn too. And I know he drinks Deuchars and Laphroaig...excellent taste eh? Title: Re: Rebus namechecks Fairport shock! "A Piece Of My Heart" contains references to both Sandy, Fairport and RT for example. When I asked him, Peter Robinson admitted to being a huge RT fan. There´s always a nod in RT:s direction in the Alan Banks novels. One even seems titled after a RT song, "Strange Affair" 8) Title: Re: Rebus namechecks Fairport shock! Post by: leahdon (Donna) on October 08, 2008, 02:17:03 PM Phil Rickman regularly refers to folk bands/singers in his Merrily Watkins books, in particular Nick Drake and occasionally FC.
Best FC reference was when one of the characters tries to hang himself and fails. The other characters notice that the music playing in the background is from Babbacombe Lee, and for the readers who don't know the reference, Merrily thinks to herself "Babbacombe Lee... that's the man they couldn't hang..." or summat like that. |
