also the beret'd one sung meet on the ledge .. introduced by the presenter as " meet the ledge "  ::) and recommended the incredible string band circa late 60's for x factor type shows.
he also chatted about the 1000 yrs project, fairport, cross cultural music, and reconciling sufi mysticism with his english background. this was then followed by " dad's gonna kill me " and discussion regarding what his remaining musical ambitions are.

Thanks for pointing this one out, would have missed it otherwise.

Richard was fairly blunt about x-factor type singers, they may have fantastic voices but they don't know how to sing a song.

Good stuff!

This was originally broadcast on the BBC News Channel - in fact a day or so before the Andrew Marr show, and was the programme that he was reported to have had a sore throat on.

yea he was... i just don't get why they don't do their research ( it is only respectful to do so ) although to be fair this one had done a bit and asked * some * good questions although her questioning about the sufism bit was irritating.

Saw this last night on BBC News 24 - the interviewer had done some research but she kept interrupting as if her questions were far more important than the answers, which became very annoying.  RT was bang on point about the X-Factor etc winners: there is more to being a great singer than the mindless vocal gymnastics that pass for R&B/soul these days..

Thanks for this Sam, and thanks for the i-player link Tim.

I thought it was rather sweet.  Especially liked the way she spoke of Folk Rock as something he'd just invented last week.  A bit like interviewing Johnny Rotten, and saying "So punk rock, what's all that about then"...

Having Richard sitting in front of you singing Meet On The Ledge (albeit a rather quirky version); now that's worth telling your kids about!

But was it as good as "Meet the Ledge"?

The Hardtalk thing was a waste of time. The interviewer (who I used to think was good) had obviously just had a couple of printouts from "Wikipedia - Richard Thompson" handed to her ten minutes before the interview and knew nothing about traditional/folk/ folk rock music (or Richard Thompson) at all. The confrontational/challenging ethos of the program 'HardTalk' lends itself to political figures being held to account, less so to musicians whose agent's have obviously ****** up a booking.

Agree with most of what has been said above. I thought it was very disrespectfull to not have even read up the correct title of the song "Meet on the Ledge" (Meet the Ledge??!). Apart from that, her whole attitude seemed to be: "Oh, aren't you really intelligent for a 'pop' singer?" Pity, because as someone has already said, she is normally a very good and sharp interviewer.

Worth watching to hear RT vehemently denouncing certain popstars as ****.

Full marks to him for not getting drawn by her silly questions about the Gaza situation.

And a pretty helpful geography lesson to show that Islam in Morocco is no further East than the UK ;D

I've just watched this on BBC iPlayer - and, yes, the interviewer clearly wasn't as knowledgable as she would have been interviewing a politician - but it is still an interesting watch. Richard was patient and restrained, but also clearly 'his own man' and quite in control. Worth catching for most fans, I'd say...

Very good review of "1000 of Popular Music" at the Barbican, in today's Guardian. I went to see him at the Corn Exchange, Cambridge last night. Unfortunetly, only caught the second half, because of an earlier emergency at work, but worth it none-the less, even for a 30 second conversation with RT about the origins of Sufi Islam, at the merchandise stall afterwards.
