There's a nice half page interview with Peggy in this month's Classic Rock magazine (March 2009 with Axl Rose on the cover) Together with talking about the tour he confirms that the band are playing at Glastonbury this year and also, regarding Cropredy, that there is "someone very exciting lined up to top the bill on August 13th". He confirms that the band have been after HIM for a few years and that finally his schedule coincides with Cropredy.
Any educated guesses?!

Sounds like James Taylor to me. I think it has he who they had been after for year. That should be good it is true. Is that FC's first trip back to Glasto since '71?

1983? They were on a sunday afternoon bill with John Martyn, I think. It's all a bit hazy now...  ;)

JT was on the BBC yesterday (Andrew Marr show?) and Mike said "Wouldn't it be brilliant if he was at Cropredy"  [;-)

They've played fairly recently too (90's or early 00's).  I'm sure of it.  But can't find any evidence to support my claim!

FC have been hoping to get James Taylor to appear at Cropredy for ages haven't they? Let's hope they have succeeded for 2009.  {:-) 8)

I look forward to seeing JT....although i'm a bit worried after reading some of the reviews of his new covers album  :-\

James Taylor has been talking/performing on Radio 2 this morning, and is gigging in the UK in early July.  I suppose he might come back again in August!  Or perhaps he could enjoy a month's holiday here!!

Yes, reading this thread  it's as if James Taylor is officially booked to play now. From memory Peggy was also quoted saying -a long time ago, mind- that alongside James Taylor, Steve Winwood was very high up the wish list.  
But then, it can be anyone. We'll see.

JT looks a lot like Robert Duvall these days.  Saw him in California in 2002.  He was good, if unexciting.

And Mr Winwood lives a lot nearer than JT.  Somewhere in the Hereford/Worcs/Warks area I think.  I'd love to hear "Keep On Runnin" at Cropredy!

Personally I'd much rather hear some of the Traffic songbook!

Peggy did reveal two definite Cropredy bookings on stage at Yeovil last night. One obvious and probably mentioned elsewhere (bring waterproof clothing) and one reasonably obvious...

Axl Rose..on the cover of Classic Rock??  I can't believe it, as the magazine rarely features anything about Axl, Guns, Slash etc etc!

Don't keep us in suspenders then.. who is the reasonably obvious one??

Simon Mayor and Hilary James have a 4 page" private collection "showing off their various instruments in this months  Guitar and Bass magazine . I place this thread here as Peggy has sold them some of his old mandos  --as mentioned within the article  . A good read and some seriously covetable instruments they own too .

Let's just say that on Saturday, before the Fairport set, he'll more than likely offer to lead you through the roads of a major city in England and show you something that'll make you change your mind...

Looking forward to it, he's long overdue for a set.

Me, I absolutely love Steve Winwood in Traffic. Then anything post-Arc Of a Diver leaves me stone cold, although I hear his last one is quite good - never heard it. Is Winwood the Traffic man these days or the 80s/90s hitmaker?
(Winwood guesting with Fairport doing the Traffic version of John Barleycorn would be most appropriate!).

More the former than the latter, though there's still a bit of that there.  Put it this way, he's happy to play guitar on stage these days....

OK confession time - I only really know of Windood as "Keep on Runnin" and those 80s hits. he's just not someone who has crossed my radar to any great extent - so why should I get excited about him headlining Thursday night as now seems likely?

What sort of stuff does he do - blues / folk / rock - what should I expect?

Traffic were one of THE great rock bands of the 60's and 70's.  There's a very folkish element to some of their material, some awesome acoustic work, and some spectacular rock jams.  Think very British, very pastoral, very very bloody good.  You need Traffic in your life.  My own personal view of Stevie's post Traffic (and don't forget Blind Faith, which came in the middle either) is that 90% of it is a major disappointment, but he's still got his mojo working.  It will be very special I reckon....

That's pretty much spot on. As said before, Winwood is very much a 2 headed monster; if you like one, you may very well dislike the other. One head being Traffic (and what led up to it, and Blind Faith, but also maybe his first two solo albums, which were a kind of transition) and the other head is this very slick FM friendly (to me-)faceless pop/soul.
Traffic are one of England's best bands ever and should not be mistaken for Winwood solo. A very unhealthy band to be in though; lots of vey dead musicians there.

I'd love to hear some of the Traffic material live.

Having seen Winwood live recently, I can assure anyone expecting a bland mid 80's AOR set will be in for a major disappointment.  The set featured Traffic and Blind Faith stuff, plus the two big Spencer Davies hits.  The only consession to the solo stuff was one of the 80's hits and stuff from his recent solo album, the recent material having a sort of jam/Latin/blues groove to it.  The mega long version of Mr. Fantasy was worth seeing on its own...
