Title: Julie Covington...Plus
Post by: GubGub (Al) on February 09, 2009, 04:19:45 PM
This may be a slightly naughty post and it may not be in the most appropriate place (Mods?)

Julie Covington ... Plus was the CD release of Julie Covington's first album on which Messrs Thompson, Nicol & Lucas (amongst others) played. I am very keen to get hold of a copy of this CD, not particularly because of the Fairport connection but because I remember enjoying tracks from it when the album was originally released more than 30 years ago. I have been surprised to discover that, not only is the CD no longer available, but it is in fact rarer than hens' teeth! The only copies to be found are going for silly money which will not find it's way to the artists and is therefore, in my book, profiteering.

If anybody can point me in the direction of a copy of this album I will be most grateful. I will happily pay a sensible price or make a contribution to charity or the PRS or other appropriate body. Any ideas?

Meanwhile I shall continue the search...

I feel your pain - I have a vinyl copy (but no record player!) and would love the CD. It also has the "Only Women Bleed/Easy To Slip" single (which I also have) as bonus tracks.

It's a rather intriguing record - sung by Julie, produced by Boyd, arrangements by John Cale, and perfroming songs by RT, Sandy, Kate Bush et al!

Where are you jamie - I am sure a kind person on the board will have  record deck from which you could access this rather wonderful sounding alvum.

I was a huge Julie Covington fan in the 70s - very fond memories of Rock Follies in particular!  8)

I was hoping this post was about her touring or even playing at Cropredy....

But it was not to be  :(

Just checked Amazon - the CD is on offer for £76!!!!!  :o

I've got her CD with her brilliant version of I Want To See the Bright Lights on,is that the one ? If so and you want a copy please get in touch and i'll send it.

I've also got Rock Follies series one on DVD,a bit cringe inducing but watchable.

I've only got the vinyl version of that album, but I've got the CD of her earlier album 'The Beautiful Changes', which is rather lovely.  Julie Covington could do no wrong as far as I'm concerned (shame that has to be in the past tense, but she's not exactly active, musically, these days, is she?!).

I remember seeing her in Godspell many, many moons ago - I'd only gone so that I could drool over David Essex, but it was Julie's singing that I came home raving about!

I tried to find it years ago when I first heard her on tracks on one of Guv'nor CDs, and I'm sure I had her singing on a vinyl of Cats, or am I completely at sea this morning? I know I drew a complete blank at the time when I tried to find out what had become of her since. A great shame.

Yes, she seems to have "retired" from both music and the stage sometime in the 90s. Even her fan sites have no new information. I am going to see Jeff Wayne's War Of The Worlds later in the year and had hoped she might be coaxed out to sing the role of Parson Nathaniel's wife, which she originated, but it seems not.

Still deciding about that- very tempted, but I really don't want to be disappointed...

I watched the video of the last tour on Sky a couple of weeks ago and enjoyed it. It looks pretty spectacular and musically is faithful to the album. Justin Hayward and Chris Thompson were in good voice and the guy playing the Artilleryman was very good  so I am looking forward to it.

The only slightly weird element was the animated face of Richard Burton!  :o Maybe they'll have improved on that for this tour.

I've got the live DVD, and it is very good. Russell Watson is the artilleryman, and the band did include both Chris Spedding and Herbie Flowers.

Loved that series!  I was a little too young to understand most of what was going on, but I loved it all the same.  And Julie was my favourite.

I'd love to hear this album too.

Drifting a little further - Tristan was resplendant in tails at the Dome Christmas concert - a far cry from halcyon Sky days!

My thoughts entirely.  A bunch of very very talented musicians who almost certainly put back the appreciation of classical music by rock fans by several millennium.  And I speak as somebody who's seen them.  Horrible.

??? I thought it helped appreciation of Jazz by Classical fans... It certainly broadened my kids appreciation of music in a wider sense.

See, there you go - jazz and classical.  Two strikes already.  Add in bland AOR, and they're OUT!

I saw them at DMH and thought they were excellent (possibly the best sound I've heard at DMH too, from a tiny PA for the time).  They did what they did, you can't knock 'em for that, and I don't recall anyone outside forcing people in :-\

Sorry mods - topic creep ::)

I liked Sky. Still got several commercial cassette tapes around here somewhere.

According to IMDB, Julie Covington appeared in "Samuel Johnson: The Dictionary Man" in 2006 ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0811052/ ), so she had not entirely retired.

Having covered, progressive rock, classical rock fusion the songs of Richard Thompson and the undeniably great Julie Covington it may be now time to get back on topic in some way.

The thread was originally about Julie Covington covering a number of RT songs with a band comprising many a Fairport alumni and produced by Joe Boyd, seems to be in the correct place

Yes, my timing was clearly off when I started this thread!  ::)

I have acquired a couple of copies in the interim. There is some nice stuff on there but I am not sure that I could wholeheartedly recommend it to people coming at it from a Fairport direction. The Amazon review gives it three stars. That seems about right.

I sort of know what you mean - also, you really need to turn the bass up on this record as it's too tinny. Joe Boyd produced it and he doesn't like the record or the cover. But a great selection of songs and musicians, and she was a great singer. I love it I have to say - even I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight with the drama student-esque vocals!

Found this on ebay.

Interesting, but a pity it's not a genuine award.

Small print at the suppliers website here:  http://www.ukmusicawards.co.uk/info.html

Smacks of sharp practice to me. Scoundrels!
