thankyou   ;D

And the extra - if slightly tenuous - Fairport connection with Jazzbirds is that Jill Swarbrick-Banks painted the picture, (which I now own) which inspired the song

There is a tiny picture of the picture on the player ;D

Mostly done via the clever internet, some people (Simon Nicol, Jacqui McShee, the oboe player Sanchia, and I) were physically recorded in my house- in fact in the room in which I am now typing. Julianne Regan, Robert Fripp, Ian McDonald, Pat Mastelotto (both in the US) and Celia Humphris, (France) sent their contributions by email and others were recorded in Norfolk..

Alistair co-ordinated everything and did most of the recording, Tim added his ears and vocals where needed 8)

The track listings are long and complicated.....

Released on July 20th and should be available all over the place  8)

Excellent songs, really strong, not that I haven't enjoyed your recent output, but on first impression these are some of the strongest tracks you have been involved in, for a long time. I look forward with antiscipation for the full release. Some excellent artwork on the site too, reminds me of Edward Gorey.

Apart from C'est La Vie and one other, I have written all of the songs in collaboration with Tim and Alistair and on one song, John Gillies, and I am really proud of them. There will be more snippets from the other songs at some stage.. I'm not going to put whole songs up until they are released. That's the plan anyway.... ::)

My website isn't currently set up for selling, but Jon the Manager is sorting all that out. It will be available via HMV and all that sort of malarkey, but details aren't yet in place..

Tis a nice old harp isn't it? The first one to tear my fingers to bits..
The photos were taken by my late uncle, a tutor at Hornsey School of Art in London.. he wanted to try out his new camera so we drove out to the countryside in Hertfordshire for him to practise taking these kind of publicity pictures.
He only developed 3 of them at the time, but gave me the negatives which have been lying in a drawer, unnoticed for over 40 years, surviving many moves, a house fire and clearings outs.

I discovered them a few months ago and wondered what they were, so had them put onto a disc, thinking they were too old to be useable, but lo and behold.. pictures of my youth.. ;D

Just having a listen on MySpace.  Was noodling about in Facebook with the music on in the background, and suddenly my ears pricked up - great hook in Harp Song; "I closed my ears for 30 years, then the music called my name".  I just HAVE to hear the whole of that song. :-)  Suits my current mood perfectly!

I've been really meaning to post a review of this album. This is my third attempt at getting it online. I wrote the bulk of it ages ago but then thought I'd lost it until a recent disk tidy-up revealed it again just in a different place. I tried to post it again last night but for some reason it vanished when I hit the send button. So, third time lucky...

My reference point for this album is Pink Floyd's Meddle. Not that Jude has gone all prog on us (well, maybe just a bit.) As with Meddle, Talking With Strangers is an album of two parts; a collection of songs that build up to a showpiece, magnum opus which occupies the whole second half of the disk. And like Echoes, Harp Song builds quietly, adds layer on layer, ends grandly and at its heart contains one giant wig-out. Epic stuff.

And also, as Meddle was for Pink Floyd, Talking With Strangers is a grand statement from an artist who has found their place, knows that this is what they're good at and knows that this is where they want to be. Jude has found her sound.

It is a different sound from its predecessors; more pastoral, jazz-hippy, more earthy and natural sounding. The synthesised sounds are played down in favour of wood and strings - dulcimers and harps dominate this time. The flute solo in the middle break of Jazzbirds is the closest reference to Spindle and The Whorl, though its more like a final nod to that era before heading off for pastures new.

It feels that this album was put together specifically by and for Jude. Spindle, The Whorl and Enchanted Garden were lovely slices of Ms Dyble's world but I often felt that the words and music were formed separately from different mindsets; they were brought together but not made together. Strangers is more cohesive, with music that clearly understands the singing.

To hear this new sound taken further, the title track, Talking with Strangers is basically Jude and a piano. This is very new but familiar at the same time. Breathy backing vocals reinforce key phrases but otherwise this sparse arrangement gives acres of space around the words. If Jude were to appear on TV, this would be the song that I'd hope she would play.

There are echoes of Trader Horne here. I think this is Tim's presence, giving Jude someone to harmonise with and allowing songs to become conversations at times. Dreamtime and Never Knowing give me false memories of those days in the early 1970s. Grey October Day is Tim doing what he does best. Dark, brooding and full of restraint and sadness. He and Jude take alternate verses in a song of missed opportunities. This should soundtrack that moment in the film where the lead couple go their separate ways and its dark and they're sad and contemplative and there are images of rainy streets at midnight with headlights glinting in the puddles.

My favourite moments generally involve Jude singing with Julianne Regan harmonising. These two voices go so well together! I hope that this can be developed further, as a full duet between these two would be very fine indeed. As it stands on this album, Julianne's contribution is lovely, understated, and perfectly complementary.

So that will do for now. I could say loads more, particularly about Harp Song but I think I'll leave it for discovery. I'm still finding new layers in that song after more than a dozen listens. I'll just finish by saying the obvious - this is a beautiful album and you should own a copy forthwith.

Cheers

Nick

she may be my buddy but i am not just saying this...

this album is magnificent. " dreamtime " is hair stand on end stuff.. it is the best thing i have ever heard jude do. i had heard a lot of these songs in fledgling form, growing and evolving and bits being added etc.  the finished songs are the result of a lot of work ... beautifully produced. jude's voice sounds strong and the harmonies are delicious ( i am a sucker for harmony ) and i think this album represents her more than anything she has done before.

would love to review it further and will asap, but for now please re-read what nick said and then some . it is beautiful.

congrats jude.... truly x

Well mine hasn't made it to North Wales yet, so I'm a bit jealous of the ones that have already flown the Atlantic....still, patience is a virtue and all that  :)

Next chance is Monday so I hope Judy´s CD can blow away my first-day-back-at work-for-five weeks-blues then!  ;)

Mine arrived (Autographed!) from Burning Shed today. Managed to give it a spin, and it sounds fabulously mellow and jazzy with a prog epic towards the end. Marvellous stuff! Shame we don't hear more of Julianne Regan these days.

I bought a copy on Saturday ay the Barbican. Haven't listened to Harpsong yet - not enough spare time - but the first few tracks are absolutley beautiful.  Album of the year so far, definitely - and I can't see anything beating it (unless Jude has another album up her sleeve...)

Just a quick signed/numbered cd update, nearly all are en route, and the very last will be posted today/tomorrow. Can people let me know if they don't have them from a week today please. I did a lot of USA/Canadian copies on Wednesday, so those should be arriving today/tomorrow. Thanks, and thanks for the great responses :)

I am always happy to sign things and I will be doing a signing stint at Crop (15.10 - 15.45 on Friday.. ;D)

There's a 5 star review of TWS up on Amazon.com   http://tinyurl.com/ntt64u

Extract "here you have Dyble's finest commercially available recording since the Trader Horne album, and I think even in fact her overall single most desirable album to own! I say most desirable, because the music just hugs you and you want to hug it."

Title: Re: New Track bits from Judy Dyble (Me)
Post by: PaulT on July 21, 2009, 09:23:59 AM
I've now listened to the whole album through twice - I can honestly say it's the best album I've heard for years.  I may be biased - after all, it's our Jude, and some of my favourite players from the early 70s are on there (Fripp, McDonald etc) - but it gels so well together.

The shorter songs are all lovely, while Harpsong seems to me to enscapsulate all that was good in the much-maligned "prog" era - top musicianship & production, strong melodies, natural development of themes - without any of the bombast of the era.  I keep hearing little echoes of lots of other bands - eg early Crimson (obviously), Floyd, Trader Horne, Stackridge - so I guess it could be described as a very "English" album. But it transcends that.

Hats, fezzes & tiaras off to Jude & her collaborators... top marks!  ;D

Mine finally arrived in North Wales today....having suffered rather badly due to the vagaries of the UK postal service.  Anyway, now rehoused in a new CD box I am listening to it and think it is truly wondrous.

Incidentally, was about to get huffy about receiving an unsigned copy until I realised Jude, Tim and Alistair all have miniscule, and very neat, signatures!

Any undecideds out there really shouldn't be.  It's everything you could possibly hope for and a lot lot more.  I will be listening a lot over the next few weeks I'm sure....

Many thanks to the cast of thousands!

Just in and no CD - but I'm really not worried. I'm sure it will turn up.

What has arrived is a letter addressed to Richard Thompson at our house number, but with the road misspelled and with the post code for the other side of the road! Which is drifting off-topic I know but I thought might raise a smile. I haven't heard that distinctive guitar drifting out of any windows but will let you all know if I do!

Oh thank goodness!

Anyway just to prove that I have it here is photographic proof courtesy of daughter #2's new camera of me clutching the CD before I disrobed from biking attire. I am  so glad I made the effort to get this - it is lovely. Two listens so far whilst cooking and dining and planning for Cropredy, and many more to come. Love the "King Crimson" moment segment which pops up as a bit of surprise! Also had to look out my ELP albums to remind us where C'est la Vie came from.

Next job is to order tickets for the 100 Club.

Great reviews. While reading the netrhythms one, I suddenly realized why the "strength of strings" line triggered a nagging voice in the back of my mind while listening to Harpsong ... Strength of Strings is, of course, the title of a great song by Gene Clark (lyrics here (http://www.lyricstime.com/gene-clark-strength-of-strings-lyrics.html) ) and it appeared on the wonderful No Other album.

So now I wonder, was it a deliberate reference? Or were both you and Gene inspired by the same reference, literary or otherwise, of which I am unaware?  :)

No Bob, in my case it was a reference back to a line in Dylan's 'Lay Down Your Weary Tune' a song I used to sing with early Fairport ('and rest yourself 'neath the strength of strings') can't remember who I first heard singing it though! and the strength of the autoharp strings, both in fact and in sound..

I don't usually delve too deeply in to the whys and wherefores of lyrics though :D

D'oh!! Of course! Being one of the Dylan songs that the Byrds covered, it was probably the inspiration for Gene's song as well ... unfortunately it's way too late to ask him  :'(

If I had my collection in alphabetical order, you'd be between Dr John (or Ian Dury if I include LPs) and the Easy Star Allstars. But I prefer a more random system...

I bought the CD at the CD tent yesterday and have just listened to it for the first time.

What a fantastic album!!!

I was expecting to enjoy it.  I was expecting it to be a good album.  But I wasn't expecting it to be as good as this.  It really is a GREAT album by any objective standard.  A true classic and one that I will keep bringing out to play for many many years to come.

THANK YOU

Absolutely stunning album, especially "Harpsong", I've hardly stopped playing it.

Only one complaint Jude, I had to buy a stronger set of reading glasses to read the lyrics and credits, and I'm still struggling!
Bring back vinyl I say ;D

I tried really hard to make the credits and lyrics bigger, but I was really constrained by the illustrations and borders on the pages. And too many words! Apologies!

I will put the lyrics and credits up on my website or myspace somehow.. Vinyl will be available in September!!!

I'm feeling very guilty because I bought the CD over the weekend and have not had time to listen to it yet (though that is true of a number of albums). However, I have put it on my Ipod and am off to the gym shortly. Is it suitable for a bit of cross training or should I listen to it in a more relaxed state?

Harpsong might be suitable for a 20-min workout: starts slow, builds up to a stirring wig-out in the middle, and ends with a soothing cool-down.

However, you might want to put on your Something Nasty in The Woodshed instead

I gave it a go. Actually it was all quite a good pace for me today as I was a bit tired so it stopped me from pushing myself too hard. It is a lovely album Jude. I particularly like Grey October Day. This is probably a stupid question but is your singing consciously influenced by Joni Mitchell? I just hear little echoes of her phrasing in there, which is delightful.

I'm concerned that my earlier post about listening to the album at the gym might have sounded a little flippant. That wasn't my intention. Sadly the only places I really get chance to listen to music in my everyday life these days are at the gym or in the car. I do a lot less travelling for work than I used to so I have lost that opportunity to listen. I don't really enjoy working out all that much so it is a lot better if I can lose myself in some music to distract myself from the pain and boredom. It does not need to be fast and frantic to work. The only things I have had to give up on at the gym are early Genesis & Leonard Cohen!  ;D But I have first encountered and grown to love lots of new music on the exercise bike. It is so much the better if it enables me to forget where I am. I was listening so intently to the lyrics on Talking With Strangers today that it certainly did that. I might actually have some time at home this weekend, a rare opportunity to actually sit and relax in the company of a few CDs and this will be top of the pile.

Title: Re: New Track bits from Judy Dyble (Me)

Well for a start there's a whole bunch of oddities people here on Talkawhile, on Facebook and on Myspace..at least 80% of whom I haven't yet met, but have been nattering to for the past few years....

...and 10 of the musicians and artists and designers who have worked on the album... I haven't met them yet either.

...so that's what happens when you start talking with strangers..some amazing things tend to happen  ;D

yeah got mine in HMV oxford yesterday.....played it first thing this morning, love the arrangements although the long track at the end made me wake up when it when heavy with some cool drums and robert fripp guitar licks and some sax....love that kind of off pattern drum rhythm.....and great voice throughout :)
