Title: Simon Nicol & Elton John
Post by: ColinB on November 05, 2009, 04:54:17 PM
A friend of mine Stuart Anthony, who is a massive Nick Drake fan and is featured in the Drake feature in the current edition of Acoustic Magazine, brought this to my attention. Some line-up.  :o

Elton John's demo sessions at Dick James Music Studio in 1968. Here you can listen Elton John singing songs of Mike Heron, John Martyn, Nick Drake and Beverly Martin arranged by Drake's producer, Joe Boyd.
The sessions featured Elton John - vocals/piano, Linda Peters (later Thompson) - vocals, Jim Capaldi - drums, Simon Nicol - guitar, Pat Donaldson - bass.

I have this on CD.Wish I had it on vinyl.
It's interesting but I prefer the originals when it comes to the Drake songs.

It might have been mentioned elsewhere but there's a Cropredy report in Acoustic Mag. Haven't read it yet.

The review mentions Maart playing fiddle in the Bad Shepherds - did I miss something?

It also has that guy in it who played for Fairport some years ago, what was his name, oh yes, Ric Saunders!

Was that an ironic spelling mistake?  ;)

Fariport Convention's annual festival?
Sounds good. Will Pixie Lott be playing?

That's nothing compared to the fact that I was never booked for nor did the said session. I've never heard the results either but have heard it mentioned "in dispatches" occasionally. I think the guitarist was Polly Palmer, but it might just possibly have been RT.

My path and Elton's have crossed a couple of times, but only in the early days, around about the "Your Song" period, but we've never, so far as I can remember, sat down and made music together. Consumed a large quantity of VSOP with him at the Krumlin Festival before going on stage with FC and falling asleep, but that was another story and another era.

Strictly medicinal!

Sounds like it could be worth sending an email to the Beesweb Questions and Answers section. Here's an excerpt from the latest Q&A...

How did you get the quasi-sitar sound heard on 'Book song' from Fairport's second LP - a piece of ivory in front of the bridge/underneath the strings, just like a real sitar, maybe? Max Cuthbert

Not so much of the quasi, Mr. Cuthbert. Just like a real sitar? How about a REAL SITAR?? I took sitar lessons for a while (’67 – ’68), in a class with Andy Somers – well, you had to, didn’t you? Our teacher was Nazir Jaurasboy (sp) of London University Dept. of Oriental Studies. He had house concerts at the weekends, featuring all the cream of Indian touring musicians, which were stunning, and really stayed with me.

Are there any other sitar players in Fairport?

Would help if I included the link - http://www.richardthompson-music.com/questionsandanswers.asp

Joe Boyd was asked about this session on the RT list (the caps and typos are his, not mine):

THE ELTON JOHN/LINDA PETERS SESSION WAS FOR A PUBLISHER'S DEMO. I THINK
THERE ARE BOOTLEGS AROUND ON THE INTERNET. AS I RECALL, IT WAS JERRY DONOHUE AND MAYBE PAT DONALDSON AND EITHE MIKE KOWALSKI OR GERRY CONWAY IN THE BAND.
WE PRESSED 100 WHITE LABEL COPIES AND NO ONE KNOWS WHERE THE TAPES ARE.

Well there's probably no point in asking RT about it. How about Gerry? Can someone ask him if he remembers anything about the session?

At this rate there'll be no-one from the line-up posted at the top of the thread apart from Elton - or was it Reg?!

 ???

Like Simon I wasnt on it either, I'm afraid. ;D

I have to admit to dozing off on a few occasions though :-[ but not when Fairport were on stage.
