Title: Re: Peggy & PJ - The Nightjar Club, Hereford Thurs 3rd Dec Post by: quodlibet (Ian) on December 05, 2009, 08:33:19 AM How was it? As expected, jolly good & as entertaining as any occasion I've seen them. Less well attended than it ought to have been, with quite a few empty spaces & a more reserved audience than turned out for the Unthanks recently. Odd, a downbeat act = upbeat audience. Upbeat act = downbeat crowd, (although the girls did well on Del Shannon's "Runaway"). That's Hereford for you. Good mix of material from LJE & few Fairport instrumentals + Sandy's "Bushes & Briars" & some Buddy Holly & Shadows (Shadows walk now off to a tee) among others. Highlights for me were "Lily Of Barbary" & "Flatback Capers". Had a nice chat with PJ about the recent "Babbacombe Lee" production and the pitfalls of sequencing tours without taking account of geography. Well done to Nigel for arranging. I thought it took the guys a while to get warmed up in the first half.
The second half was great -yes, we did our best at "Runaway" (a lovely adaptation, as was the one of the Buddy Holly song"It doesn't Matter Any More") and Peggy's Lonnie Donegan story is always good ;) |
