Title: Knebworth - FC and Led Zep
Post by: Mr Cat (Lewis) on February 10, 2010, 06:39:52 PM
When FC played at Knebworth, what was the line up and what was the set-list?

Incidentally, on a LZ/FC note, the Wikipedia entry for Robert Plant mentions a possible recording session with TAW's very own Judy Dyble in 2009....

Lineup was Swarb, Peggy, Simon, Bruce....others will need to provide the setlist, I'm afraid...

I suspect that Mr. Cat is enquiring about the 1979 Knebworth set list?

Indeed, although I am grateful to Bob for reminding me of what was played during the 2 guest appearances from Mr. Plant..

Oh! I didn't think he could be asking about that given the ease of finding it:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knebworth_Festival_1979

... unless Mr. Cat, you were asking about the FC setlist ... that will take some more digging  :)

Edit: to no avail unfortunately

Hi

I was at Knebworth that day. I can not remember the set list but I seem to remember it was similar to the farewell farewell gig that I attended earlier in 79.

I was at the first. I vaguely remember Chas'n'Dave and Led Zep.

I'd had a lot of interesting tobacco-like substances.

When FC played at Knebworth, what was the line up and what was the set-list?

My guess would be that it was a similar, truncated version of the set they later performed at Cropredy that night:

    * Royal Selection #13
    * Walk Awhile
    * Dirty Linen
    * Journeyman's Grace
    * Adieu Adieu
    * John Barleycorn
    * Me With You
    * White Dress
    * Stagger Lee
    * Hen's March Through The Midden / The Four Poster Bed
    * The Eynsham Poacher
    * Flatback Caper
    * Mother And Child
    * Bridge Over ... The Oxford Canal
    * Sir Patrick Spens
    * Red Guitar
    * Lark In The Morning Medley

Far fewer songs would have been played - for sure.  However, whatever songs they did play were very likely on this list.

I don't think a definitive set list exists - I'm a member on FBO, the Zeppelin mailing list and asked if anyone there had anything, but have drawn a blank I'm afraid.

I was there too. I have no idea what FC played that day although I do remember it was a short set.

....and since no one can recall a single tune they played - obviously, not one of the most memorable sets as well.

In truth its almost certain to have been a selection from what's on the Farewell Farewell album (tracklisting below)...with maybe a Sloth thrown in for good measure...

I'm sure I remember a ropey old tape recording of it 25 years ago (bought from a head shop in Guildford called something like the Divine Frog), but I might be imagining it all.

Side one

   1. "Matty Groves/High Road to Linton/Orange Blossom Special" (Traditional, arrangement by Fairport Convention; Trad., arr. Fairport; Ervin T. Rouse) – 8:34
   2. "John Lee" (Dave Swarbrick) – 3:18
   3. "Bridge Over the River Ash" (Trad., arr. Fairport) – 2:40
   4. "Sir Patrick Spens" (Trad., arr. Fairport) – 3:17

Side two

   1. "Mr. Lacey" (Ashley Hutchings) – 3:36
   2. "Walk Awhile" (Swarbrick, Richard Thompson) – 4:13
   3. "Bonny Black Hare" (Trad., arr. Fairport) – 2:40
   4. "The Journeyman's Grace" (Swarbrick, Thompson) – 4:35
   5. "Meet on the Ledge" (Thompson) – 6:18

1997 30th Anniversary Edition (Encore Encore): Extra tracks

   1. "Rubber Band" - 3:05
   2. "The Hens March Through the Midden/Four Poster Bed" - 3:37
   3. "Flatback Caper" - 6:38
   4. "Dirty Linen" - 4:20

I think I remember that shop too, but maybe I'm imagining it too.  If it is the one I think I remember it always seemed a bit like Mr Benn's shop, and you were never quite sure it would be there next time you walked past!

So Swarb denies the 1970 Troub Zep jam happened, but Peggy maintains it really did occur.  Maybe Swarb had gone to bed...?

I think this is a bit like Stills and the Croz disagreeing about where they first sang together (Joni's or Cass's I think)...can't remember which side of the argument Nash comes down on...

It always brings to mind that old Post-modernist mantra... There is no one truth; there are many truths.

This is my truth...tell me yours  :)

Nash agrees with Croz.  Nash nearly always agrees with Croz.  Unless Stills is in the room.   ;)

You have to remember that we are talking about the early 70s, which were effectively the same 'decade' as the late 60s and you know the saying -

'If you can remember anything about the sixties, you weren't really there.'

I am of the same age group and I can't even remember where/when I met my husband!

So you see, never trust a hippy, especially in the memory department ;)
