Title: Most moving concert ever....
Post by: RichardH on June 13, 2010, 10:36:25 AM
Yesterday's Kate McGarrigle tribute at Royal Festival Hall.

Not just the Wainwright/McGarrigle bits but the entire Thompson family on stage together. Not just usual suspects Teddy and Kami but other son and daughter and grandson.

And whose eyes could not have moistened when Linda sang "Go Leave" accompanied by Richard. Just the two of them, alone on stage...

Sounds absolutely wonderful ! RT & LT together alone...something that will probably never happen again...but you never know, stranger things have occurred !

Oh, I think it may well happen again....they were both quite comfortable.

What is more unlikely is the Thompson family all on stage - but was that Jack or Zak on the far left? They were both listed in the programme, but only one showed up....

Agreed abour the concert being the most moving - I certainly haven't witnessed anything like that before - it was almost a wake, rather than a gig...

It was I believe  Zak singing with Kami and Teddy. Jack I think played some bass on one number sitting down at the back.

Many thanks Simon.  Were you there (or are you getting to any of the other shows)?

I bumped into Simon going backstage after the show....

The most moving concert that I am ever likely to witness.....

Another excellent review (The Independent).

http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/reviews/a-celebration-of-kate-mcgarrigle-royal-festival-hall-2001364.html

It mentions The Walking Song as being by Rufus about her, whereas I think it was the other way on, unless it's a different song with the same title. But the reviewer was obviously genuinely moved.

It now appears it was (unofficially) recorded too....

There was a guy sat in front of me recording it - for personal reasons, I'm afraid I wreckerd his recording. I don't normally, but he was definitely giving the impression he was intending to boot it (i.e. sell copies).....I suggest you listen all the way through to ensure that it isn't this copy (incomplete or quite noisy at times)

This one doesn't read like that...says all the right things in his listing...'Support the artists - buy the records - go to the shows ', lists all their websites etc etc and is obviously a fan not a commercialist.  He does say there is phone noise (his!) in the second half....still...

The RFH traditionally has hideous accoustics >:(

Nothing traditional about it!! The accoustics are just hideous - like the Fairfield Hall in Croydon, where I warn that it will cost you £8 to park for 3-4 hours and £10 for 4-5 hours. best to use your Freedom Passes ;D

Stephen, are you quoting yourself?  :-\  ::)

Might have to agree to disagree on this point - the acoustics are wonderful in the RFH, have seen various concerts there over the years ranging from classical, to FC with Waterson:Carthy in 2002, Brian Wilson's premiere of "Lucky Old Sun", etc. and have always enjoyed the sound of the room. The QEH is a nice-sounding room as well  - have seen Judith Owen, and Gordon Giltrap in there this year. The major gripe I would have with the South Bank complex is that it looks hideous from the outside (60's architecture to blame) - not a great advertisement for the jewels within.
Actually, while we're about it...saw FC's winter tour @ Croydon Fairfield Halls in 2008, not the worst-sounding venue I've been to by any means. Was surprised by Chris Leslie's wonderful revival of "Reynardine" for the first time that night, and Ric bringing "Mock Morris '89" out of the vaults too - both pieces came across very effectively in this venue !

Stephen, are you quoting yourself?  :-\  ::)

What odds are you offering? ::)
Also, is qouting yourself a euphemism?  :-\

 ;D

Well, from the evidence I reckon the odds should be quite low.

And if it's a euphemism then I'd worry greatly about the term "double-quotes"  :o

What I'm really asking is whether StevenGiles is actually two people using the same login to Talkawhile? In which case I'd like a quiet word please, Steven  ???

Cheers

Nick

No, there's only one of me ::) I couldn't see an edit button, so I quoted what I was correcting if you see what I mean!

No problem Stephen  ;)

I have to check these things, and I do get worried when people start talking to themselves!

I shall edit this thread back into a sensible shape a little later on. As you were..!

Cheers
