Post by: GubGub (Al) on July 13, 2010, 11:31:52 AM
Here is the draw for the first round of the 2010 FC Cup (names picked out of a hat in the traditional manner). Games to be played between 13 & 15 July.

Group A

Rising For The Moon v The Five Seasons
Unhalfbricking v Bonny Bunch Of Roses
Full House v Angel Delight
Rosie v Nine
Tipplers Tales v Jewel In the Crown
Gladys Leap v The Wood & the Wire

Group B

Expletive Delighted v A Sense of Occasion
Fairport Convention v XXXV
Babbacombe Lee v Who Knows Where The Time Goes
Gottle O Geer v Over The Next Hill
What We Did On Our Holidays v Red & Gold
Liege & Lief v Heyday (making up the numbers)

Top four in each group go through to the quarter finals based on numbers of goals (votes).

Edit: Top idea. I've moved it to a new topic and put in the groups.Colin

From the pools panel at Kirk Central, eschewing trying to predict a result for teams that I'm not overly familiar with. Perhaps a couple of surprise results there, but we'll have to see how the rest of the voting goes before drawing any firm conclusions. Mainly home wins, the cup's traditional whipping boys GOG aside, and although a strong effort from some of the more unfamiliar faces of Heyday, there was only really going to be one winner there. A cup upset seems unlikly for plucky Tippler's Tales, up against some very strong opposition although as you can see, an early lead has been established based on the romance of the cup. The heard it first factor weighing in heavily there. In the battle of the minnows, Expletive came off strongly against SOO, however I can see this being a close-run match over the next three days or so. The Full House v. Angel Delight game looks like the one to watch, and with some very strong sides already drawn against each other, I can see one of the unfancied sides maybe even making it as far as the quarter finals this year. Tough draw in some places.
Always liked Tippler Tales, but it doesn't stand up against Jewel in the Crown.
Never 'got' Over the Next Hill and for all its faults Gottle O Geer has a couple of classic tracks.
Shame no 'Old, New, Borrowed, Blue'.

Some tricky decisions there.  A couple that could have gone either way (Holidays, Rising) and one where a pin was employed (Gottle) as I don't like either but in the main the expected heavyweights have come out on top.

BTW, given that there aren't sixteen matches, how does the competition arrive at a final two?  is it like the actual FA Cup where certain albums only arrive in later rounds?

Sorry Colin, I didn't think of that one. I was trying to restrict it to studio albums and ONBB is predominantly live.

Yo may have spotted a flaw in the organisation!  :-[ Quick rethink. I shall employ a group system as follows:

Group A

Rising For The Moon v The Five Seasons
Unhalfbricking v Bonny Bunch Of Roses
Full House v Angel Delight
Rosie v Nine
Tipplers Tales v Jewel In the Crown
Gladys Leap v The Wood & the Wire

Group B

Expletive Delighted v A Sense of Occasion
Fairport Convention v XXXV
Babbacombe Lee v Who Knows Where The Time Goes
Gottle O Geer v Over The Next Hill
What We Did On Our Holidays v Red & Gold
Liege & Lief v Heyday (making up the numbers)

I understood that Old, New, Borrowed and Blue, Live Convention and Farewell Farewell got a first round bye and that Before Your Time, despite not officially being a FC album would also come in at the second round (in the same way that Swansea and Cardiff play in the FA Cup).
I especially look forward to Simon Nicol's cup predictions...  ;D
Perhaps we should have him, Peggy and Swarb on a couch commenting on the results as they come in on a special programme hosted by Adrian Chiles.

Before Your Time would have to face a playoff against House Full first. Perhaps it is best to stick to the group system this season and revise the eligibility rules for 2011!

Group A

Rising For The Moon v The Five Seasons - not the most entertaining match
Unhalfbricking v Bonny Bunch Of Roses - a hard won contest
Full House v Angel Delight - only because Poor Will was playing
Rosie v Nine - a walkover despite Big William own goal
Tipplers Tales v Jewel In the Crown - surprise upset, Jack Orion scores a hat trick
Gladys Leap v The Wood & the Wire - a narrow victory

Group B

Expletive Delighted v A Sense of Occasion - another fairly dull fixture
Fairport Convention v XXXV - there's life in the old boys yet
Babbacombe Lee v Who Knows Where The Time Goes - an easy victory
Gottle O Geer v Over The Next Hill - GoG never looked likely to score
What We Did On Our Holidays v Red & Gold - no surprise there
Liege & Lief v Heyday - not the drubbing that was predicted

As you are going to adjudicate Dave I shall offer my predictions:

Group A

Rising For The Moon v The Five Seasons This line up getting into their stride in their third outing.
Unhalfbricking v Bonny Bunch Of Roses An energetic performance from the veterans seeing off the much fancied young experimentalists.
Full House v Angel Delight. No sloth here. A tightly fought contest which nobody deserved to lose.
Rosie v Nine A well organised and muscular perfomance, stood up to the opposition and brought 'em down.
Tipplers Tales v Jewel In the Crown. Beer fuelled determination sees off a side hampered by a surfeit of lampreys.
Gladys Leap v The Wood & the Wire. Gladys leapt and headed home.

Group B

Expletive Delighted v A Sense of Occasion. Over the ******* moon Jimmy!
Fairport Convention v XXXV. It's Alright Ma, it's only football
Babbacombe Lee v Who Knows Where The Time Goes. The BL boys live to play another day as surprisingly strong opposition run down the clock.
Gottle O Geer v Over The Next Hill. Cropredy capers employed to good effect in an otherwise uninspiring fixture.
What We Did On Our Holidays v Red & Gold. Colourful kit not enough to overcome a well rested opposition.
Liege & Lief v Heyday (making up the numbers). Crazy Man Michael makes his presence felt against hastily put together challengers.

Group A

Rising for the moon v The Five Seasons  Striker Denny has a couple of great moments here
Unhalfbricking v Bonny Bunch of Roses  A last minute penalty from G. Hall
Full House v Angel Delight. A draw at full time. Full House wins on classic penalties
Rosie v Nine A more experienced side wins over youthful enthusiasm
Tipplers Tales v  Jewel In The Crown Close, but the latter with more striking power.
Gladys´leap v Wood & The Wire  What a comeback!

Group B

Expletive Delighted v  A Sense of Occasion Three magnificent midfielders -P. Merion, Jams O´Donnells and Hanks - couldn´t touch the older side.
Fairport Convention v XXXV The U-21 side crushes a side with an average age of 35.
Babbacombe Lee v Who Knows Where The Time Goes The more inventive side wins
Gottle O Geer v  Over The Next Hill GOG really doesn´t play like a team, OTNH does!
What We Did On Our Holidays v Red & Gold   4-1 and a brilliant performance
Liege & Lief v Heyday An old and heavyfooted team aganst dazzling improvisation and flair, brilliant offensive ideas.

Group A

Rising For The Moon v The Five Seasons - bit of a solo show for Denny; if only they'd worked as a team like the Seasons.
Unhalfbricking v Bonny Bunch Of Roses - mammoth freestyle show at half time from the Brickers stole the show.
Full House v Angel Delight - very close match,
Rosie v Nine - a match decided in the first half. Some shocking playing from both sides in the second half.
Tipplers Tales v Jewel In the Crown - some ghastly foul play in the 80th minute coupled with a glorious 88th minute goal lead the Tipplers to victory.
Gladys Leap v The Wood & the Wire - it seems some people's feet were too busy dancing.

Group B

Expletive Delighted v A Sense of Occasion - a glorious show and not a word spoken between them. That's teamwork that is.
Fairport Convention v XXXV - draw.
Babbacombe Lee v Who Knows Where The Time Goes - All together more coherant and consistant side, though some moments of magic from both.
Gottle O Geer v Over The Next Hill - GOG were quite litterally trampled underfoot. Difficult to recover from that.
What We Did On Our Holidays v Red & Gold - Good playing from both sides, but some cheeky tactics (including the use of guest strickers Lowther and Lacey) lead to a rare home win.

There is some more analysis to be done on this. We need to establish group tables by reference to goals (votes) to determine the quarter finalists.

Where's Big Dave?

Righto,

The draw for the round of 16, knockout stage is as follows. Games to be played between now and 10am tomorrow morning.

Full House v The Wood & The Wire
Tipplers Tales v A Sense Of Occasion
What We Did On Our Holidays v Rising For The Moon
Expletive Delighted v Liege & Leif
Babbacombe Lee v Unhalfbricking
Nine v Over The Next Hill
Fairport Convention v Jewel In the Crown
Gladys Leap v XXXV

A couple of tantalising fixtures in there. One between Denny debut and Denny return. Another between the man they couldn’t hang and the word they couldn’t spell! Favourites Liege & Leif appear to have picked up an easy away tie but time will tell.

You are lucky I don't call them Standard Liege & Lief!  ;)

Here's my ten pennorth.

Full House v The Wood & The Wire  Sir Patrick spins and delivers a perfect ball into the back of the net.
Tipplers Tales v A Sense Of Occasion  The pub team still rising to the occasion.
What We Did On Our Holidays v Rising For The Moon  Youthful exuberance wins out over more mature but ponderous tactics.
Expletive Delighted v Liege & Lief Something of a drubbing by the plucky Belgians.
Babbacombe Lee v Unhalfbricking  Dying's very easy, scoring's very hard!
Nine v Over The Next Hill  Polly on the scoresheet!
Fairport Convention v Jewel In the Crown  Full time shows the wiser.
Gladys Leap v XXXV  A performance worthy of honour & praise.

Expletive Delighted v Liege & Leif   Masterclass in attacking foils unusually quiet display from the reinvigorated, freshly strengthened side
Babbacombe Lee v Unhalfbricking] in a closely fought battle the youthful team proved just too innovative for hard working JBL
Nine v Over The Next Hill  roared on by the crowds Nine saw off the challenge from the OTNH mob with some ease
Fairport Convention v Jewel In the Crown  Closest fought game of the round but a muscular performance saw off the innovative attacking skills of the FC team
Gladys Leap v XXXV  With a mixture of youth and experience and good choice of subs GL were just too good for a lacklustre XXXV showing

Some of my matches are in extra time and some have already progressed to the penalty shoot-out.  Yes, it's as close as that.

Every track has to 'step up to the plate' and try to get past me into the goal.  I scoop up the tracks that are off-target and send them, like Gareth Southgate and Chris Waddle, back to the centre circle.   There have been tears and dashed hopes - and that's just from me!

Funnily enough, that one was pretty clear cut for me as were all of these fixtures but four of my favourites went out at the group stage through being drawn against tough opposition. The previous round gave me much more trouble. Interesting isn't it that the much fancied Angel Delight is out of the tournament whilst A Sense of Occasion soldiers on. As the president of FAFA (the Fairport Album Football Association) I have to enforce the law that no scoreline can be changed after a result has been declared, especially if it benefits a team I don't like!  ;D

Not a problem BD. It is all in hand.

This round is looking very interesting. There is one fixture with only one point between the sides at the moment and it may not be the match that people expect.

Not in this inaugural tournament. We are sticking to the studio albums. If we run the tournament again we will revise the eligibility criteria to include live albums and possibly organise the group stages slightly differently.

So, here are the results of the first knockout stage in our tournament, including one very tight and exciting game with the lead changing hands throughout. The general trend seems to have been for teams of a certain vintage to overcome the more recent upstarts but that may be a quirk of the way the draw has worked out.

Full House v The Wood & The Wire         31 - 4
Tipplers Tales v A Sense Of Occasion         24 - 10
What We Did On Our Holidays v Rising For The Moon   28 - 7
Expletive Delighted v Liege & Leif                    1 - 33
Babbacombe Lee v Unhalfbricking         18 - 14
Nine v Over The Next Hill            28 - 6
Fairport Convention v Jewel In the Crown      18 - 17
Gladys Leap v XXXV            25 – 9

The draw therefore for the quarter finals is as follows. Games to be played by 10am tomorrow, with the semi finals later in the day and the final on Saturday.

Fairport Convention v Gladys Leap
Full House v What We Did On Our Holidays
Liege & Lief v Babbacombe Lee
Tipplers Tales v Nine

Some interesting games in prospect there with the Liege & Lief boys (& girl) in particular having finally picked up an opponent worthy of them.

I assume that the semis will be played at a neutral venue and that the Queen will be on hand to present the trophy to the winning side? I understand that Katharine Jenkins has already been approached to sing the traditional (sic) pre-match "Now Be Thankful" and that even now Richard Digance is already telling people that he's just going along to "see my mates". Sadly there are reports that FAFA have been heavy handed in clamping down on unauthorised merchandise sellers and that anyone approaching FC Cup venues with anything other than branded Leon's vegetarian platters in their coolboxes are being turned away, non-Wadworths tankards are being confiscated at the gate and that a hastily-convened criminal court is overseeing the proceedings against 21 attractive young folkies who turned up in Show of Hands-branded orange minidresses. Reports have it that a 'Karen' is helping police with their enquiries after obtaing media-stamped tickets from tournament commentator Mike Harding for the party. Fans are reminded that there are no deckchairs permitted beyond the half way line. On a lighter note, it is hoped that increasingly frail 91-year old ex-president Simon Nicol will be loaded on to the back of a golf cart and wheeled around the stadium at the closing ceremony. Really tricky this one - First album versus comeback album, West Coast rock influence versus West Oxfordshire folk influence - rock wins out.

Two classics but Full House for me - one of my top 3 FC albums

The two high concept albums battle it out but RT and Sandy bring LL home and dry.

Battle of the underdogs but Nine is one I listen to again and again so a narrow victory for Trevor and JD.

Ah, that is the beauty of it. There was no seeding. Matches drawn purely out of a hat like the FA Cup so any team can come up against any opposition. I have ambitious plans for how to run the 2011 tournament if we hold one which will make it even more open.

And so we reach the semi final stage. Results of the quarters are below. I am genuinely surprised that some of these were not closer and in particular that the not very well hung squad from Babbacombe did not put up more of a fight. Fairport Convention have had a slightly easier passage to make the semis after two tight battles in earlier rounds.

Fairport Convention v Gladys Leap   21 – 14
Full House v What We Did On Our Holidays   25 – 10
Liege & Lief v Babbacombe Lee   25 – 10
Tipplers Tales v Nine         7 – 28

The draw for the semi final is as follows. Games to be played by midnight tonight.

Full House v Nine
Fairport Convention v Liege & Lief

That looks pretty straightforward to me. The final looks predictable but I may yet be surprised.

I'm slightly disappointed that these two fixtures did not get drawn the other way round which might have been interesting but as things stand...

Full House v Nine  No real contest here despite the high regard in which the opposition are held. Disadvantaged of course by being two short of a full squad!
Fairport Convention v Liege & Lief Probably the most difficult tie for me to call in the entire tournament. Almost everything falls in the face of One Sure Thing but that opening few seconds play from the legends just edges it. Come All Ye echoes from the terraces.

Title: Re: The 2010 FC Cup

Full House v Nine - a close one, Nine played out of their skins, but Full House were playing Poor Will (some controversy here) and then Nobby Thankful came on for the last two minutes and scored the goal of the tournament.  Earlier goals courtesy of Spens, P (Full House) and Althea (Nine).  Final Score 2-1

Fairport Convention v Liege & Lief - alas, this was a walkover for the L&L superstars.  F.C.F.C. can congratulate themselves for getting this far, but today they may as well not even bothered turning up.  Goals from Matty Groves (2), Tam Lin (2) and "Crazy Man" Michael.  Controversially (again), "Sir" Patrick Spens had no sooner finished playing for the Full House team, than he turned up in the dying minutes of this game and scored a belter for L&L.  Final score: 6-0

Nine was great to begin with, but faded badly in the second half.

Liege and Lief were cohesive and really well organised, and reminiscent of the Total Football of the Dutch Masters. Striker Matty Groves was accused of some showboating before being ingloriously fouled by Lord Darnell, but substitute "Crazy Man" Michael brought things under control again for the last five minutes.

On the surface the easiest round but as it's fantasy and based on opinion not perceived truth, then the pluckiest two teams deserve to be in the final, the Nine album not the most attractive on the surface but the willingness to battle and fight there way to the final always there and the  creative first line up get to show their spirit and surprise the opposition, although if they have the stamina to go the distance in the competition remains to be seen.

So on to the Final - as I'm going to be away for the weekend with no internet access I would take this opportunity to register my vote now.  (Oohn the audacity - match fixing - whatever next!)  On the assumption that the final does indeed turn out to be FH v L&L then my vote goes to Full House.  Liege & Lief is undoubtedly a milestone, without which etc etc but I've always found it an album to admire rather than wholeheartedly love, whereas i fell in love with Full House the first time I took it out of its gatefold sleeve & popped it on the old dansette.

Can I ask the organising body if we can we have an official ruling on whether Poor Will or Nobby Thankful are eligible to play if Full House do get through?

I know Poor Will was on a suspension for 31 years, but is he now considered part of the team?

And Nobby Thankful - is he now considered a 'proper' Full House player?  Despite now starring as a striker for XXXV, I know that strictly speaking he's on loan from The History Of F.C., and before that only ever played one-a-side matches.

These matters need resolving before the final gets underway as they may greatly affect the outcome.

Oh heavens. It is that can of worms is it?

The view of FAFA is that Poor Will sneaks in as part of the original squad albeit relegated to the subs bench.

Nobby was never really a part of the team and was brought in on loan from the Compilations league without ever having been wholly integrated. As such he is cup tied and ineligible for the final.

Title: Re: The 2010 FC Cup
Post by: GubGub (Al) on July 16, 2010, 04:12:28 PM
Sir B is in the same boat as Nobby.

Benny is cup tied by virtue of having played for his eponymous team, eliminated at the group stage.

The Full House side will have to get by on the strength of their original signings and that should be enough for anyone!  :)

Poor Will was removed from the original team due to his inability to play in his assigned position. that original decision should be upheld, if he is allowed to play do we get to bring in Sir Pat and the Quiet one for the final if as most believe the final match is a foregone conclusion.

Surely the beautiful game should be based on the original line up not late substitutions.

Semi Final results:

Full House v Nine   30 – 7
Fairport Convention v Liege & Lief      3 - 34

And so here it is, the fixture we have all been waiting for, the final of the 2010 FC Cup. 22 teams began this tournament and we are now down to the last two. Many hard battles have been fought along the way with some much fancied sides being eliminated at the group stage. The draw, however, has been kind to the two heavy hitters who have made it through to perhaps the final we all anticipated from the start. The winners of this match will of course go on to play in the Folk Rock Champions League against teams from the Richard Thompson, Sandy Denny and Albion Band Cups.

Celebrities and minor members of the aristocracy are taking their seats in the royal box as kick off approaches.

Before that Katherine Jenkins will take the podium to sing the anthems and lead the crowd in the traditional FC Cup Final hymn, Now Be Thankful.

The referee is having a few last words with the two team captains and….we are underway. The 2010 FC Cup Final has begun.

The players have played extra-time and penalties and are still level. So the Management team have come on for the final shoot out.

Dave M, Dave S, Simon & Richard have all scored for both sides. Peggy will now have to take two to even up the sides. Peggy & Ashley both score. Peggy hits the bar, whereas Sandy tucks her shot coolly in to the corner.

So my result is:

Full House v Liege and Lief

Both wonderful albums, but my preference for Sandy's beautiful voice has to edge it.

ps. nothing against Dave Pegg, but as he was only a manager for one of the sides it was easier for him to be the one that missed. Though in musical terms I don't think he has ever missed for FC.

Although the classic and venerated line up of the L&L side looked to have this one sewn up in advance, the more robust and earthier FH side just shade a win. New signing was Pegg impressive at the back with the solid and dependable Nicol playing the holding role just in front him, leaving mercurial front pair Thompson and Swarbrick to play off each other in a seamless fashion which was just too much for the normally reliable L&L side, who have pulled off similar victories in this competition for many seasons now. We are lucky that the draw gave us such a memorable final, and had these two finely-matched sides met in an earlier round the result may well have gone either way but, that's football for you, on any given day one club can beat another.

In a post match interview, Spens expressed sorrow at his team's defeat, but declared how pleased he was not to have to end up playing against himself.  Last time that happened, he said, he fouled himself quite badly and as a result was sent off, which didn't seem quite so fair for the Spens who was the innocent victim of the dangerous tackle.

Denny was superb in goal, stopping shot after shot from the FH star Swarbick. However, Thompson was just as enormous in the opposing goal, and the game was scoreless at the end of normal play. After two overtime sessions, however, the strain of playing with only 4 vs. 5 began to tell, and early in the third overtime, Denny unexpectedly left the net, took the ball the length of the field with nary a challenge from a defender, and blasted the ball past a leaping Thompson into the upper corner of the net.
The FH manager said he intends to lodge a protest with FAFA, but he could not deny that his side was too tired to continue much longer. Thompson is looking quite disgruntled in a corner of the locker room away from his teammates and one has to wonder if his days with the team are numbered.

the final was almost ruined by the pre-match announcement that Sandy denny would be leaving L&L straight after the final to work on her skills with trevor lucas, jerry donohue gerry conway and pat donaldson in a as yet unnamed group and Ashley Hutchings had signed a pre contract agreement to join Steeleye Span for the next season.
Looking a bit rocked at the start the L&L  side quickly settled down in a closely fought contest with L&L's numerical superiority nullified by a sterling, muscular defensive display from the FH backline.
and although L&L were well led up front by Ms Denny the team work of messrs Pegg, Swarbrick, Thompson, and Nicol for FH more than made up for percieved deficiencies in the vocal attack dept.
then as penalties loomed large The new found confidence of the writing tipped the balance leading to Thompson getting a slothful head on a long ball which was to end up in the back of the net.
0-1 to the Full House lads although the scoreline did not represent just how entertaining the final had been

This was always going to be a lively game with Rakish Paddy matching the Flatback Capers of the full house midfield, the creativity and beauty of Liege and Lief in the end could not cope with the much more physical side of Full House. This however was a cleanly won game based on dogged determination and team play it was only the motel linen that was dirty and the Full House crew were not bid a farewell farewell by the Liefers sending them home instead in need of a physickal.

I was 12 years old in 1969 when my older cousin introduced me to Liege & Lief.  We listened to it at his house fairly constantly.  When Full House came out in 1970 I bought it, and its songs have remained permanently etched into my brain ever since.  If we're talking about which album is "better", then I'd have to objectively say Liege and Lief for forging new ground in the musical universe, and, of course, for Sandy's incredible voice. But if we're talking about which do we like more, and have an attachment to, and all of the other intangibles which put a musical work into a special place for us, then I have to say:

I do declare L&L to have won out, but the final decision is up to Gub as he started all this! Whatever way Fairport win and that is enough me!

Full House v Liege & Lief

Regardless of line-up changes. Poor Will's split personality on the subs' bench is somewhat confusing - will it be the original or the enhanced one who comes on to score the winner?

Full House v Liege & Lief

The winners had an extra player on the field - up front - and she made all the difference.

Well that was incredibly close and exciting!

The final score in the 2010 FC Cup final is...

Full House v Liege & Lief  17 - 19

By a narrow margin Liege & Lief are declared champions for 2010.

I suppose it was inevitable really and yet I am still surprised. I had always suspected the Liege & Lief was an album more admired than loved but it seems it may be most people's favourite after all.

I now wonder if there is any fixture in which it would be defeated. For me personally there are probably about half a dozen but FAFA will now have to consider how to run the tournament in future without the result being a foregone conclusion.

Congratulations then to Liege & Lief and good luck in the Folk Rock Champions League where they will most likely come up against Fotheringay, Rise Up Like The sun & I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight.  ;D

....And fair play and all due thanks to GubGub for organising a brilliant 17 page thread.  Well done all competitors for a superb and cleanly played competion, a rarity in itself these days.  I have heard on the grapevine that Gub has been head hunted by FIFA to organise their next footie bash!  ;D ;D ;D

So who will be in the Champions League? Off the top of my head, the three mentioned by Gub - plus No Roses, The Tain, Moving Hearts, The Man in the Moon Drinks Claret, Chemins de Terre, The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter, Alright Jack.

Any more for any more?

Thanks Gub, very enjoyable.

Now we have a champion, this could lead to several more tournaments. Firstly, we should let the best of the English teams join in. Once we have an English winner, the many strong teams from Scotland, Wales and Ireland join for a UK tournament. This can be followed by European and finally a World cup.

I recon an RT only cup would be enjoyable and a little less predictable.

Would that be RT only or with Linda too??

I think you'd have to include the Linda albums.

Happy to arrange it if people are up for it. Somebody will need to start a thread for me though as I am unable to do that, or I can post the first round fixtures here and someone can seperate it off for me.

Still reading older threads, sometimes page after page and sometimes at random. I saw this thread several times but didn't open it until this morning and spent a very enjoyable hour or so reading it, it made me laugh out loud a couple of times. I think every new member should read this because it is hugely entertaining (especially for Fairport fans) eventhough the outcome is predictable.
