Threads like this really don't tell us anything. All we end up with is a list of all the available turns.
Next weekend when Cropredy is a month gone the 'Cropredy 2010' topic will be moved to a less prominant location and we will start looking forward to upcoming tours.

We will have a topic about suggested acts for Cropredy 2011, but not just lists, more a discussion.

Can I just ask, has any suggestion here ever resulted in an actual booking?  :-\

Well, since it seems that pretty much every musical act in existence has been suggested, and therefore most if not all of the acts booked must have been suggested, it merely falls to us to prove a causal link, and assure ourselves that we have not fallen into the logical pitfall of "post hoc, ergo propter hoc".

If I remember correctly, they tried to get the RULTS line up together sometime last year, but it all fell apart. My guess is that JT then tried to get Home Service back together as a result of that.

It would be great to see The Home Service or that vintage Albion line-up at Cropredy. Either way you get Tams, Taylor and Gregory on stage together. Or you could have a sort of evolving set where one band merges with the next. This is fantasy after all.

First and foremost: Robert Plant.

He's touring again, for a start.  He has a new album coming out.  Who can say that they didn't get a shiver down their spine when he came out for "The Battle Of Evermore" a couple of years back?


After that, well, does it matter?

Would love to see Ray Davies. No-one has a better back catalogue for festivals and he would be a wonderful headliner. Proved at Glastonbury this year he can play to and engage with a big crowd, rather than just go through the motions as so many "names" do.

For the folk side, will be great to see Home Service.  How about Salsa Celtica, Lau, Demon Barbers and Imagined Village? Would also be nice for Bob Fox and Billy Mitchell to get a decent length set

Seriously? Someone at the Fairport office went through the Bands I'd Like To See thread and thought "Oh, hang on - you know who we've forgotten ...". Actual question. In which case, good work on the Quo front, Jim.  ;D

I think Shane meant has a suggestion here caused a band to be booked.

Given the number of suggestions that get made on here it is highly likely that some will coincide with actual bookings (in fact I'm surprised that only two suggestions made it; I would have thought the number would be higher) but those are only coincidences.

The question really is, has Talkawhile ever had any actual influence over the line-up?

I can think of two bands whose inclusion may have been influenced, albeit ever so slightly, by posts on Talkawhile: wRants and Leatherat. All other bands, as far as I'm aware were either connected to Cropredy by some other means or came to Talkawhile after playing the festival.

Of course, If SftBH and/or Circus Envy end up on that stage we shall claim all the credit  :) Never mind the ability, it's the chat that counts!

Not after last time! Biggest disappointment of my gig following life!

Amen to that, i was never so glad to hear WSOP in my life, because i knew it would soon be over

I missed that year, but I remember thinking that the people who gave their set bad reviews must be wrong. I'd have loved to have seen them...

Then, the other night, I caught a concert from the same year by Procol Harum at Union Chapel. Sadly it was a case of sitting patiently through endless, excruciatingly boring numbers waiting for them to play something from the classic back catalog. Yes we did get A Salty Dog, Shine On Brightly, Homburg, Conquistador & the inevitable Whiter Shade Of Pale, but for the most part the rest of the set was sheer tedium.

IMHO of course.

it would be great if richard thompson was there next year, mainly just to do a guest slot with fairport, he really adds some wushter (soon to be on urban dictionary if you're interested) to the music with his input on leccy guitar.  

also, i reckon paul weller would be a good addition. does anybody agree or is it just me?

Paul Weller is brilliant live - but don't think that Cropredy would suit and vice-versa

Can't see why not - he talks favourably about Fairport in the Island documentary, and was involved with The Imagined Village.

I'm not his biggest fan, but there's always the bar.....   ;)

And let's put "I was a road for WISHBONE ASH on there as well." Maybe a turn from Showaddywaddy, Buck's Fizz featuring the bloke from Dollar and Lieutenant Pigeon without the old woman on piano. Can I mention the cross between **** MOD acts and Dogs from Easterenders? Paul Wellard.

i was thinking of going to download this year to see slash but the thought of all those stages intimidates me, lol. and it seems pointless. two acts that you want to see are bound to clash at some point.

copredy has got it right with the one stage.

Its funny how its almost become a USP now...when it used to be what always happened.  

Funnily enough i was thinking just the other day about that old Reading thing they used to do - 2 main stages next to each other...1 being used and the other being set up...and a VIP section just in front between the two (aka a 'target' for the large bottles of, er, um 'excess water' flying from the 'cheap seats'...) ;D

Good call for The Popes...we had them in Southsea a few weeks ago and they were storming. Cheap Trick would be very good for the "you'll know more of their songs than you think you do" slot.

I'd like to see Motorhead play at Croppers, just to see how long it takes the field to clear.The sound of chairs being folded up in a hurry could well drown out the band.

Hmmmmmm. Niiiiice open minds. All very well objecting to one act, but a whole genre? Give us an idea where you draw the line, it must be a bit blurry around the Steely Dan, Grateful Dead, Frank Zappa, Herbie Hancock, Carlos Santana, Average White Band, Georgie Fame, Jaco Pastorius, John McLaughlin areas. I bet you don't hear any jazz down the Lowick Community Hall.

Lol.  I am joking of course...  I mean, I've got plenty of jazz in my collection (well, 3 CDs and a Reader's Digest vinyl box set).  I was going to make a joke about Jazz Mags.  But I've wisely decided against it....

I don't dislike Jazz at all...I just don't really get much of it (I remember seeing Art Blakey a few years before he died...everyone was in raptures...I was bored senseless).  Its not a question of a closed mind...I'll listen to anything.  Can't guarantee to like it though.

Coltrane though.  He was cool.  So don't give up on me just yet  :)

I am astonished at this anti-Jazz sentiment. Is it all aspects of the Genre, just bibbly-wibbly, just trad., just bebop, just swing or what?

I admit to being surprised as well, I would have thought some lovely chilled out jazz would be just the thing on a warm afternoon.. someone like Theo Travis for instance..... :)

As I've said before didn't used to be a fan of Jazz. But, after the wonderful set by Martin Taylor, definitely a convert.

Though as one of my favourite bands, Gong, have a definite jazz feel, perhaps I've always liked it. Confused.

What about "The Hollies"?

I like Jazz - Soft Machine,  Miles Davis Electric period, E.S.T, Phronesis, Neil Cowley, Polar Bear, Acoustic Ladyland, Get the Blessing, Kit Downes Trio, The-Quartet, TrioVD, Portico Quartet. There's some great music out there, and a whole load of it from young British bands. Not really keen on trad jazz, though.

I must say I agree about scat singing. Excruciatingly embarassing. It's this "I don't like everything from Scott Joplin to George Benson or Courtney Pine" that amazes me. It's not all the same!  Putting something in a box and then despising it is just what has happened to Folk for so long. It's all Music!

Yes, I agree with what your saying, as when I mention folk music to peolpe who have never listened to any, they usually say something like hey nonny no, or they know one line from all around my hat!.  

Sorry, but when rock music moves close to jazz music then I start losing interest.  Of all the names you list above, I'm only a fan of Grateful Dead, and even they leave me cold when they get caught up in freeform expression and long improvisation.  And yes I know that's not the only kind of jazz, but then the other kinds don't set me alight either.  It's just not my bag.  I'm not saying it's bad music, just that it's not my thing.

Theo's a genius on his instrument.  But, again, he's, imho, much better when crossing over to the Rock sphere (Gong, for instance) than when 'stuck' solely in the jazz genre.  Theo and Fripp are great, but haven't a chance of working in a festival field.

I don't know why but it surprises me to hear you are not a fan of Steely Dan. I'll grant that it has been diminishing returns after Aja but I would argue the run of albums from Can't Buy A Thrill to Aja is a 70s output to rival Stevie Wonder & David Bowie in terms of consistency and originality during the same period.

And just to bring it back on topic. Steely Dan for Cropredy please (though they are not by most accounts a great live band. Definitely studio animals.)

The worst album I ever bought was that Flying Teapot thing.  I thought they'd be a bit Pink Floyd-y.  Bought it, brought it home, played it, felt embarassed and somewhat nauseous, and promptly hid it in my wardrobe and tried to forget it existed.  Horrible!

I'll tell you what, if the Dan play, I'll definitely wear a fez. It would be quite amusing to see the look on their faces, wondering in some way if the preponderance of fezzes in the crowd was in some way a reference to one of their more obscure album tracks!  ;D

I love them live. The 2002 (ish) gig at Hammy Odeon is one of my best ever. All the accurate perfection of the studio work with a brilliant live feel. Brass section, excellent threads, Becker looking as if he knew where he was.  Last year or the year before they wheeled on Elliott Randall! Niiiiiiiiiiiice!!!

I can't imagine them playing outdoors though.

I used to love Showaddywaddy.  When I was a student, the guy who booked the bands was a mate of my mine and I convinced him to book them.  He agreed on the basis that, since I was the Deputy President and would be authorising the cheque, it was OK with him.

They were already booked elsewhere the night we wanted them.  Gutted.

We ended up with the Bootleg Beatles.  Tragic.

Saw Simon Fowler do a solo acoustic set at Moseley Folk a couple of years ago and he was superb. He has stated he'd love to play Cropredy as well. In either form it'd get a thumbs up from me.

Old Crow Medicine Show and / or Dave Rawlings Machine. Played the Troxy in London last night to a 2000 crowd. Had the joint jumping, especially when Gillian Welch & John Paul Jones joined Rawlings on stage....

All I can say is that there was much conjecture amongst the queue....I ws there for nearly 30 minutes....

And there was at least 5 in his band too.

Never seen them before, so didn't know it was usualkly just Dave & Gillian (I knew they were partners)....if so,  they borrowed a fiddler from OCMS too....

Very odd.  There's never been a Dave Rawlings Machine gig without Gillian (there's been a few solo DR gigs but not many)....and most of the time it is just the two of them.

Most of the Gillian Welch gigs are just the two of them

DRM gigs are Dave, Gillian and three of the OCMS bunch (Ketch on fiddles and harmonica, Willie on guitar and Morgan on bass) with occasional special guests, usually on mandolin.

They are since just before the album but prior to that most DRM gigs (and they've been going on for years) were just Dave and Gillian (and sometimes a few guests now and then)

there is always one or more band every year that fit into the bluegrass or rockabilly genre (i'm not saying those two genres are the same by the way). but somebody in the fairport camp obviously has a penchant for that american sound, and even though she isn't american i really think she is the hot property in the rockabilly genre. even people who have never enjoyed that kind of music before find themselves tapping their toes. it's infectious music.

I've wanted to see Spinal Tap at Cropredy for a long time now, even so far as drunkenly suggesting the prospect to Mr Pegg at the bar a couple of years ago. With the Harry Shearer married to Judith Owen who performs with RT connection, it's not the most unlikely thing in the world. The difficulty lies in persuading Christopher Guest and Michael McKean to match their schedules being busy Hollywood types, however, with Christopher Guest being a hereditary peer, he could perhaps combine some lordly duties with a couple of gigs this side of the pond.
Whatever happens, they must do a set as The Folksmen then transform into Spinal Tap, The Folksmen at Cropredy would be fantastic. By the way, Peggy didn't think it was a bad idea either !

Can I ask a practical question at this point?
Is there room on the Cropredy stage to do Stone'enge?

There's probably room at the stages on the fringe to do Stonehenge ;D

Just been on recent gigs expounding virtues of the Angie Palmer Band, she's on at the Brasenose on Sat 9th Oct.

We were chatting after the gig and she was saying they'd love to do it. She knows the festival and the village, I reckon they'd be just the job. All very nice people as well, would fit in perfectly. And they don't half rock when they get going!

Having seen them last night I would say The Jim Moray Band. Really energised, loud and driving folk-rock. He's a great singer, uses the electronics well, and the band are terrific. The drummer Dave Burbidge lifts the pieces very much in the style of Dave Mattacks, and the other two - Saul Rose and James Delarre are great musicians.

I know Jim isn't to everyone's taste on here, but as a live act they are obvious Cropredy candidates. At times I was hearing vintage folk rock - the match of anything from the 1970s.

Bill Kirchen. Used to be the demon guitarist with Commander Cody & his Lost Planet Airmen. He seems to do little gigs all over the place in the States, Don't know if he'd consider coming over here.

He'd do OK at Croppers as he has a great sense of humour and can't half spank the plank. Anybody who can shoehorn Iggy Pop, John Philip Sousa & Freddie King into one song has my vote...

ive mentioned this before but i saw family quite a few times and they were always good until poli left and professional drunk Tony Ashton joined, i saw them with him and they were (maybe not all) pissed as farts, ashton slumped over the hammond after about 3 songs and that was that, i never bothered myself with them after that

last time i saw cocker he was drunk as a skunk(belle vue kings hall, manchester early 70's after the mad dogs tour)

The best music from Family came well before that. The first three albums.

Best gig I ever saw was Family in Bournemouth Winter Gardens - America were due to open but one of them failed to show so Family did 2.5 hrs straight - they only stopped as John Whetton had recently joined and didn't know any more of their material. Chappo is still doing post retirement gigs (played Bedford recently) and would make a good addition to Croppers.

I saw them on tour with America. They'd just had a chart single and there seemed to be loads of young girls who'd just come to hear that.

how about the Urban Folk Quartet? This new band has all the rock and funky folky influences to go down great with Fairport fans and Joe Broughton is bound to put in some blistering fiddle tunes to really get the crowd going! Plus it's something really new...

An admission here that I know the band so am biased but I think if you saw them live you'd see what I mean!

I also think Jack McNeil and Charlie Heys would be brilliant floating across a Cropredy sunny afternoon field...

Having seen them the other night, I'm going to put in a shout for Johnny Flynn & the Sussex Wit.  Great music, played with real fire.

After seeing some band or other at the Robin, I was on the way out of the door when the dj played a Family tune which I thought was great.It wasn't the Weaver's Answer, but a laid back psychedelic type thing.I know this is a bit vague (and off topic) but do any of you Family fan types have any suggestions of what it may possibly might have been?

I was at Union Chapel in north London last night to see Ian Hunter do an accoustic set with his regular band and a string quartet- and a thought came in my head that this would be great for Cropredy.

That narrows it down to about half their stuff, Mike. Any more clues? Like a lyric? Was it acoustic? Brassy? Did it have violin? You know, that kind of question.

Aswad used to be one of the best live bands around, but then they went & did a Genesis!
IE: The drummer started doing most of the vocals & their material got much, much weaker, albeit it sold much better (naturally). I would love to see the Aswad who gave us 'African Children', 'Chasing For The Breeze' & 'Judgement Day', with Brinsley Forde on vocals again, but I'm not so sure about the current version.

"Supertramp" currently has an eight strong line-up, a brass section but incredibly no Roger Hodgson. Given a choice, I would much prefer to see Roger Hodgson back at Cropredy.

Fr the new up and coming acts, could I mention one or two highly talented bands from Liverpool- The Random Family and Sparkwood & 21. I first came across these two bands at a small festival, Music with a View in Coniston. These are two of a set of really good acts around the Liverpool area that I have grown to really enjoy. As Fairport are renowned for their support for emerging talent, It would be a blast tio see these two given a bigger stage.

If you are in or around Liverpool - Check if the Family Folk Up is on at St Bride's Church or the Company Store in Zanzibar- Acoustic/Indie Folk appears to be alive well and kicking at present

I saw Wilko Johnson on Friday and, do you know what, I think he'd be superb.

I keep going on about The Blockheads  , who i think are magnificent.

Getting  Wilko along would work great  because  he  plays with  the Drummer   and the fantastic Bass player Norman Watt Roy both from the Blockheads.

I  can see it  now Wilko and the boys finish off with "Back in the Night"   quick break for Norman to change his  suit [ which always ends up soaked in sweat ]  and  on come the Blockheads - Norman says" we are the Blockheads and we go like this:-"  and the riff of "Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll " hits a jumping crowd.

Back to reality now it's  mid October , cold and I'm a bit skint

Dave, their early 3 or 4 albums are really bluegrass, folky with a hard edge. The later ones have added an electric side. Plenty of fiddle, accordian and mandolin in evidence, throw in 3 great singers and for me it's a beautiful recipe! Very quirky lyrics too!  [;-)

Sparkwood & 21 were excellent when we saw them supporting the Clientele at Williamson Tunnels earlier this year, their album is really good. I'd also add By the Sea and the wonderfully named Misery Guts, who are probably my favourite of all the new Liverpool bands - their new EP 'More Human Than Human' is easily the most played item in our house at the moment.

I love them and both their albums are great. But, I wonder whether it would work in a large field, perhaps another one for the smaller venues.

My latest recommendation would be The Zombies

I'd tend to agree. They're a wonderful band but can tend to be a bit introverted on stage and are maybe more suited to smaller venues rather than a field of 15 000+. Something more intimate like Big Session would be perfect for them but sadly I couldn't see it working at Cropredy.

They were absolutely stunning at Weyfest this year. They also did not restrict themselves to just Zombie numbers, so we got Hold Your Head Up, God Gave Rock and Roll to You, and I don't believe in miracles.

Home Service & Corvus Corax would do it for me. And some reggae/highlife (I'm thinking E2, the "original" Aswad, King Sunny Ade).

Squeeze are very much working. Spent ths summer in the USA so no Crop but next year, yes please. They are about to start a UK tour supported by The Lightening Seeds, some dates already sold out. We're going to the Brighton gig.

Having just read, 'Jumpin' In The Fire: A life In Rock 'n' Roll', by Sean Tyla & having only just discovered through said book that Ducks Deluxe reformed & have been recording/gigging again, I'd like to propose them for consideration. His next band, the Tyla Gang reformed would be just as good. I'd love to hear 'Suicide Jockey' or 'Cannon's Of The Boogie Night', or even some of his solo recordings, such as 'Breakfast In Marin' from the Cropredy stage.

Have they been on before...?  I seem to remember Dave and Jo Ann Kelly playing at one festival together in the 80's and me being absolutely glued to the spot (and I'm really not a Blues fan as a rule), and I can't remember if that was Cropredy or not.

I think I'd rather see the Manfreds than the Blues Band.  But then I am a bit of a fan.  I'd certainly rather see them than Mann himself!

Was listening to that Bon Jovi gig on Radio 2 earlier, Jon Bon Jovi said that they are returning to the UK and Euroope for a tour next year and are looking to play some outdoor summer gigs in the UK.  Watch this space? The village shop should do a roaring trade in lighter so that we can all light them up during that gig.....(Straight jacket on and running for the hills........ ;D ;D ;D

I've seen Bon Jovi 4 times and they put on an excellent, professional show every time. In Hyde Park they played (and he sang) for nearly 3 hours.

But they're not really "Cropredy" are they  :-\ The Blues Band are tho, and The Manfreds. I'd be up for them  :)

Anyway, I haven't got one  ::) I'd love to see them there. They are a great singalong band and JBJ loves an audience. He did a little accoustic set once in the centre of Cardiff during lunchtime. Heather Lockyear (the then Mrs Ritchie Sambora) was there. Proper rock chic  {:-)

Can't argue with what you say Jules, I just think that despite all that, hearing loads of those great songs would be enough to do the trick, at least for me. Graham Nash in Hollies action would be truly fantastic, but it ain't gonna happen.

He did it in '84 (I think) and I'm pretty certain I read an interview a couple of years ago saying he wouldn't mind doing it again as a one off.  That may of course have been the RocknRoll Hall of fame thing which was somewhat hilarious/sad in Allan Clarke totally ignoring and pulling the mic away from one of the later members (can't think who it was..Sylvester?) whilst the 2 guys still running the band (Hicks and Elliot) weren't on stage as they were contracted to do a gig somewhere else.  An AC less Hollies is a rather ridiculous thing imho.
