Title: Top 3 favourite Fairport line ups
Post by: Henry Tompkins (Pete) on October 19, 2010, 07:24:16 PM
I'd be interested to know in what order you guys and gals rate Fairport's 3 best era line ups?
Mine would be:

1. What we did on our holidays era
2. Full House era
3. Rising for the moon era

Should I start compiling the 3 least liked now?  Probably have a soft spot for some of those too in truth.

1. Full House
2. Angel Delight
3. Debut album

No room for Sandy.  Gulp.   :o ;) :)

I was tempted to include the Manor Sessions lineup, but you'd probably think I was taking the p*ss.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to sit on the fence so hard I'll be able to feel the splinters, but as I'm a fan of all eras of FC, I think all the lineups have something to offer in their own unique way...but, here goes :

1. Current lineup
2. Nine Lineup
3. Angel Delight/Babbacombe Lee lineup

bonny bunch of roses

most line-ups have their own charms and there isn't one i don't like, but i do like my Swarb, electiric with a wah wah pedal ,a fag and a a cheeky grin

Tough call, but on balance:

1) Liege
2) Full
3) Nine

Nine
Full House
Liege

(but BBOR / TT came really close as well)

I too feel the need to sit on the fence. What should be my criteria for deciding. My instinct says

1. Full House
2. Angel Delight/Babbacombe Lee
3. The Maart years for their spectacular live performances.

But now I have to beat myself up for not including the Nine/Tippler's Tales/WWDOOH line ups which I love passionately too.

All of which goes to prove that Fairport are not really a single band but but about 17 different ones!  ;D

No Sandy David, how could you?   I know she was only in the band for 3 albums, but when I think of FC, she is always first to my mind.  :'(

I do genuinely and honestly believe the Full House era (live and on record) to be the pinnacle of all things Fairport.  My first Fairport was the early 80s version so substituting DM for Bruce (who I love, but let's face it, DM was a better drummer) that's the reason for my second choice.  And the debut lineup must be one of the most overlooked bands in history and I love them.  Sandy is one of my favourite vocalists ever.  I adore her.  But I answered the question honestly.  Honest!  (And I really do love the Manor Sessions too!).....

of course this is in recording terms for me having only got into FC in the late 70's during their hiatus.

However as a live band since then my fave line up is the one that never was - fairport 25th anniversary:

peggy, Simon, Maart, Chris, DM and Ric doing keys a bit.

Chris's performance that weekend was the singularly most amazing musical performance in the bands history. What a pity he plays it so safe these days.

Well he'd be hard pushed to maintain that level of tightrope walking!  Plus, of course, that following that gig, he never had to learn so many tunes so fast, or wing it on a hope and a prayer quite so incredibly.  In short - he can't play it more dangerously when he's playing in the same band he's played in for so many years, unless his fellow bandmates all agree to attempt some feat of daring do as a group.

All of which is true but he had been touring with the band for some weeks prior to Cropredy. I saw them in, I think, June. Probably the most electrifying Fairport show I have ever attended.

I can't see any 'feat of daring do as a group' in the near future sadly.  ^-^

Good call.  I often talk about that lineup as my favourite Cropredy 'main' performance (I guess I'd argue for some of the FH lineup performances above that) by the chaps.

1. The line-up I first saw - Angel/Babbacombe
2. The line-up I wish I'd seen - the 1st album (though the Barbican show last year came as close as it possibly could)
3. The line-up I'll be seeing on the next Wintour
