I must say that this is something I have been waiting for!  ;)
I hope we can start preorder our copies soon.
Will it be ready “til Christmas? ;)

Sounds expensive but I shall look forward to it! I wonder what the publication date is? A little way away yet I suspect.

We can (have done) register our interest on the website. That gives them an idea of demand which, in turn I assume, means 'the bigger the print run, the lower the price'.

This will be a fantastic book, as long as all surviving ex-members of the band have some input - Judy, Ashley, Iain Matthews, Bruce Rowland, Jerry D., Maart, DM etc. as well as input from Joe Boyd, John Wood (recording the band), maybe even Christine Pegg (in her capacity as original Cropredy co-organiser). If they use interviews from as many people as possible, it will be wonderful.

My only fear is that this may be a bit like some of the Genesis publications tomes. They are things of beauty but are heavily weighted towards pictures rather than text. We want the whole story, warts and all.

The coffee table format worries me slightly but if they are taking The Beatles Anthology or The Pythons books as their models it should be fine.

I'd much rather have an really exhaustive history (say the size of Electric Eden) for about £20 than some huge weighty tome with pictures of ticket stubs and old posters for £100.  I'd buy the former but not the latter.

"........ as told to Fairport expert Nigel Schofield"

Given the Free Reed boxset books by him it sounds promising, but I hope they get a proofreader to weed out the mistakes, given those same Free Reed books

Title: Re: Fairport book

Maybe there'll be no new interviews and they'll just use previous quotes....hence why Jude hasn't been contacted by anyone.

I do love the book that came with the Free Reed box.  If it has anything like the same amount of detail and research then it'll be fab.

The Beatles Anthology video series was brilliant. Something like that for Fairport would be great as well. The book should be great, providing it has as much great content as the 'Fairport unConventional ' book does, with more detail. Obviously coming from Fairport themselves, it'll be a more reliable source.

You may think that but I know for certain that some events are better remembered by audience members than by Fairport themselves. Can't say for definite, but alcohol may have been involved...  ::) :o ;D

what a masterstroke the chaps have pulled off by publishing this counterweight in latin!
that should frighten the horses and keep it out of the hands of the lower orders while latin scholars as myself will pour over it for hidden depths for years to come. plenty of work also for the catholic clergy translating it for those of you with no latin to speak of but a passing interest in the once popular beat combo.

till then, i'll just leave you with this maxim which has given me great comfort over the years, quid hunc errat quasimus est sic mondeo passat

ps : just one thing, i do hope the actual book is going to be proof read by someone with a working knowledge of the band and how their names are spelt, eg Simon Nichol and Ashley Hutching, if we are going to be asked to shell out a considerable sum i would  hope no basic errors like this will sneak through.

It's sort of a quote, it's an adaption of a couple of lines from one of Catallus's most famous poems.  And now we're so far away from the topic we can't even see it.

Have Fairport ever sung in Latin?

The missus has just got an email with lots of photos wot will be in the book.

The shot of the Full House lineup with an IBM 360 mainframe is IMHO worth the price of the book on its own. Resembles a still from 2001 with some of the actors from the Dawn of Man sequence on the wrong set!  ;D ;D

It looks as though it's being published digitally by a 'Lulu' type online publisher - if the first few pages that can be accessed via http://www.fairportconventionbook.co.uk are any guide - there the band and publisher would be the same, with Nigel Schofield the author.

THere are 124 posts of interest registered so far on the Fairport website. Maybe Simon N will be along soon?.....

That link doesn't work for me either.  I think a good idea for a Fairport book would be a compilation of all past Cropredy programmes.  I've been collecting them for a while now and they are really interesting and do show how much the festival has changed.  I was reading the 1983 one this morning and it reminds festival goers to "PLEASE, use the toilets on the site - the surrounding land is private and trespassers WILL be prosecuted."  Not something we have to be told these days, I hope!

Having thought about it a bit more, I think a compilation of the tour programmes would be just as interesting in a different kind of way and they go all the way back to 1976.

That's a great shame. I think there was maybe more interest than was declared, but that there was a certain hesitancy about just what we were going to get.  I'd have loved a Fairport coffee-table style book.   :(
