Title: RT Mastermind Post by: Jamie on February 06, 2011, 09:25:07 PM According to the listings in today's Observer someone's doing Richard Thompson as their specialist subject on next Friday's Mastermind. Anyone from these parts?
Title: Re: RT Mastermind Post by: Chris on February 06, 2011, 09:39:51 PM Not here, but on the RT email list.
Title: Re: RT Mastermind Post by: Dave Brzeski on February 07, 2011, 02:07:30 AM Not to mention the Fairport list.
Title: Re: RT Mastermind Post by: Jules Gray on February 07, 2011, 09:02:43 AM Not to mention the Fairport list. There's a Fairport list? Jules Title: Re: RT Mastermind Post by: Metro96 (Keith) on February 07, 2011, 11:25:10 AM Not to mention the Fairport list. There's a Fairport list? Jules He said not to mention the Fairport list :-X Title: Re: RT Mastermind Post by: Jamie on February 07, 2011, 11:39:57 AM I wasn't going to mention that he'd mentioned it, but now you've mentioned it...

Unfortunately, the 2 minutes ticked away and they scored zero because they couldn't get past the first question. "Who knows where the time goes?" Has anyone seen my coat? Title: Re: RT Mastermind Post by: michael from naas on February 08, 2011, 10:24:35 AM Seem to remember someone doing Fairport Convention as their specialist subject a few years back.
The format at the time was that John Simpson would chat briefly with each contestant, asking them how their interest in their special subject developed etc. Simpson told the contestant that he had never heard of Fairport Convention prior to doing the show! I got about two right.Must try harder on Friday Title: Re: RT Mastermind Post by: Andy on February 08, 2011, 10:25:30 AM John Simpson?
Shurely shome mishtake, John Humphrys I'd think. Title: Re: RT Mastermind Post by: michael from naas on February 08, 2011, 10:26:43 AM My mistake indeed.
It was never the same after Magnus Magnusson. Is my face red! Title: Re: RT Mastermind Post by: Amethyst (Jenny) on February 08, 2011, 10:42:28 AM I preferred Magnus.. I saw him once at an RSPB conference.. JH seems so patronising.
Title: Re: RT Mastermind Post by: Metro96 (Keith) on February 08, 2011, 10:57:56 AM I've been to a couple of recordings of MM in Manchester & JH comes across as a very nice man who genuinely tries to keep the contestants calm with his chat.
The chatting bit at the start of the general knowledge round is heavily cut in the edit and can go on for 5 minutes or more, rather than the 20-30 seconds we see on screen (this could be due to technical issues we are not party to and he is flanneling). Title: Re: RT Mastermind Post by: Jamie on February 08, 2011, 11:08:14 AM Seem to remember someone doing Fairport Convention as their specialist subject a few years back. Anyone got a list of the questions for that one? Title: Re: RT Mastermind Post by: Nick on February 08, 2011, 11:15:34 AM Seem to remember someone doing Fairport Convention as their specialist subject a few years back. Anyone got a list of the questions for that one? No, but I remember that Jude was one of the answers :D Title: Re: RT Mastermind Post by: Amethyst (Jenny) on February 08, 2011, 11:20:29 AM Steve Tilston also told a story about watching it and being really surprised when his name was one of the answers...
It was about who wrote a song for FC. Title: Re: RT Mastermind Post by: Zoe on February 08, 2011, 11:37:06 AM Steve Tilston also told a story about watching it and being really surprised when his name was one of the answers... It was about who wrote a song for FC. So surprised he choked on his fish and chips and drank his daughters contact lenses according to Keith Donnelly ;D Title: Re: RT Mastermind Post by: KascadeDan on February 11, 2011, 08:10:36 PM Just saw it.
The first question was too easy! ;D Title: Re: RT Mastermind Post by: Anne T on February 11, 2011, 08:37:19 PM Oh dear! He was winning after the first round, but the RT specialist's general knowledge rather let him down - twelve passes...
Ashamed to say I got 10 of the RT questions, but only 5 on Shakespeare. Title: Re: RT Mastermind Post by: Dan O. on February 11, 2011, 08:45:42 PM Had forgotten all about Big Muldoon, so had to pass on that one
Title: Re: RT Mastermind Post by: PLW (Peter) on February 12, 2011, 12:25:18 PM The chatting bit at the start of the general knowledge round is heavily cut in the edit They don't it at all any more. Title: Re: RT Mastermind Post by: PLW (Peter) on February 12, 2011, 12:25:54 PM Oh dear! He was winning after the first round, but the RT specialist's general knowledge rather let him down - twelve passes... Poor chap went all rabbit in the headlights. Title: Re: RT Mastermind Post by: Chris on February 12, 2011, 12:37:05 PM Steve Upstone, for it was he, is resident on the FC e-list if anyone is interested in asking him anything....
Title: Re: RT Mastermind Post by: Bob Barrows on February 12, 2011, 12:40:32 PM Whoooo - talk about shouting at the screen ... ! So close Steve!
Title: Re: RT Mastermind Post by: Poor Will (Bill) on February 12, 2011, 01:21:17 PM I managed a fairly respectable 14.
Title: Re: RT Mastermind Post by: Nick the Stick on February 12, 2011, 01:50:20 PM Anyone notice that the lady announcer at the beginning said the subjects included Stephen King? As did pressing the 'i' button on the remote.
Title: Re: RT Mastermind Post by: Chris on February 12, 2011, 02:05:13 PM Steve Upstone has just published a blog on his experience

I got about 7 of the RT questions right-not bad as I only just rushed in the door from collecting my son from uni. He seemed to get a complete mind freeze during the general knowledge.Still they are all easy when you are on your on couch rather than the big chair Title: Re: RT Mastermind Post by: Anne T on February 12, 2011, 09:20:35 PM My favourite part of "Mastermind" is matching the contestants with their specialist subjects before they start. Mr Upstone was the only one I got right in that episode...
