Title: Close to the wind...
Post by: Jono on February 20, 2011, 10:29:24 PM
Hey experts...

I'm having a moment(?!)  :o

The song "Close to the wind" is widely credited (according to google) as written by a guy called Stuart Marson.

Can anyone tell me if this is the same Stuart Marson who used to live in Bloxham (Oxfordshire) in the early '80s???

It's a 'moment' for me because I was bestest friends with his son Duncan and my mum/dad often mentioned how Stuart was friends with Ralph McTell and was a very accomplished guitarist/songwriter.

I'm just keen to know if by some weird coincidence, a song that I've known and loved for years was actually written by the father of my closest childhood friend; and I never knew!

Anyone know any more???

Pretty sure it is who you think it is - I recall Simon doing an intro to the song where he sang Mr Marson's praises, but made a point along the lines of SM not quite getting the breaks to allow him to become a full-time musician, which SN regarded as a shame. If I recall correctly, Stuart Marson was a scoolteacher by profession.

Btw really love the song.

Blimey! Well if that isn't him then I'll be blown!

Thankfully, my mum stayed in touch (by post only, how old-fashioned!) so I've got his address. I might write him a letter I think!  ;D

Better late then never, but yes, the same chap. I must have met him in passing - but he was a much closer pal of Peggy than I.

Thanks Simon - Seemed too coincidental to be a coincidence  ;)
