Title: Re: RT and LT at the BBC Post by: GubGub (Al) on April 14, 2011, 05:24:23 PM RT made mention of this a little while ago. I forgot it was on the way. Something to very much look forward to.

Too late for my birthday and to early for X-mas ... Better find some space in the "Holidays" piggy bank... :D Title: Re: RT and LT at the BBC Post by: Nick the Stick on April 14, 2011, 07:30:48 PM I've got that A Little Night Music. It's a good concert with a great band, Mattacks, Nicol, Pegg, Kirkpatrick, but suffers from the weirdest camera angles I've ever seen (you never get to see Simon's face, for instance) and Lida's voice is a bit rough.
Still worth having, though. There was also one with The Home Service which was brilliant. I transferred it to DVD and chucked the video. The DVD no longer works (AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRGH). Anyone got a copy? Title: Re: RT and LT at the BBC Post by: Will S on April 15, 2011, 08:29:59 AM That sounds like a great box!
On a related matter, back in the day I recorded an RT Big Band concert off the radio (1983 or 84, I guess). which was great. I can't remember now if that was a BBC recording or possibly from Capital Radio. Anyone else remember that and know if any of it has ever turned up on any official releases? Judging by some of the on-stage banter, Simon Nicol must have been playing the Cornflake guitar for at least part of the show. Title: Re: RT and LT at the BBC Post by: Staffan on April 15, 2011, 10:58:58 AM I have a very nice RT concert from a Swedish Radio broadcast, September 1983 on cassette. Nine songs and the line-up = Fairport FH minus Swarb. Excellent in several ways but I haven´t seen tracks from that FM show surface anywhere. My favourite RT period -Shoot Out...& Hand of Kindness

Is there really nothing from between 1987 & 2001? I can think of at least two Radio 1 In Concert appearances during that period and I'm sure there were more concerts and sessions.
Title: Re: RT and LT at the BBC Post by: DarrenWilliams on April 15, 2011, 01:26:03 PM I'm sure there was an Andy Kershaw session around the time of Rumor and Sigh. IIRC Andy Kershaw asked RT how he came to write Vincent Black Lightning to which RT replied 'I used my imagination!'

My guess is that it's down to Capitol Records. In 1987/88 he moved from Polygram to Capitol, then he parted company with them in 2001. Perhaps his contract with Capitol has prevented commercial release of sessions from that period? Title: Re: RT and LT at the BBC Post by: michael from naas on June 17, 2011, 08:41:36 PM I can only report report that it is up on my music streaming service and sounds tremendous! Mind you the first thing I did was listen to " A heart needs a home " and I am more or less typing through the tears.
On a related point I was watching the RT concert on last Thursday when her nibs arrived in from her book club. She said "Oh Richard Thompson, lovely,I'll have a glass of wine with you ".After a few minutes she said,"I don't suppose he'll ever get back with Linda"? In her defence she loves The Dimming of the Day and when she hears it always says,"that beautiful song, and they broke up"!. She did suggest that a Richard/Teddy or Linda/Teddy collaboration might work. Can you imagine? Teddy and Linda Thompson sing the songs of Richard Thompson. Freud would have a field day! Title: Re: RT and LT at the BBC Post by: michael from naas on June 17, 2011, 10:08:30 PM It sounds great, but without the Oedipal twang of Teddy and Linda singing "Don't renege on our love".
We'll see. A quick search of youtube doesn't throw up anything as pervy as that. Title: Re: RT and LT at the BBC Post by: GubGub (Al) on June 24, 2011, 08:30:27 AM My copy arrived yesterday. I've only just started listening to it but two observations so far.
I'm slightly shocked that some of the stuff on the first disc sounds more as though it was recorded in 1933 than 1973! Secondly, it is a shame that nobody thought to include musician credits for the ensemble recordings. Title: Re: RT and LT at the BBC Post by: Will S on June 24, 2011, 08:46:35 AM Keep posting the observations, Gub. I still have 2 weeks before I can lay hands on my copy (and probably a while longer before I can actually listen to it properly).
Sorry to hear the sound quality isn't so hot on some of the tracks - let's hope it improves as it goes on. Title: Re: RT and LT at the BBC Post by: quodlibet (Ian) on June 24, 2011, 08:53:02 AM My copy arrived yesterday. I've only just started listening to it but two observations so far. I'm slightly shocked that some of the stuff on the first disc sounds more as though it was recorded in 1933 than 1973! Secondly, it is a shame that nobody thought to include musician credits for the ensemble recordings. Indeed. The first Top Gear session sounds distinctly "off air", but an immense improvement on my old cassette copy. Also, a significant amount of the Hammersmith broadcast is missing, nothing at all from the '75 "In Concert" & a Barrymore's video is seriously truncated. There will always be something to quibble about, but lack of musician credits is a poor show. In all though, it's still a fine artefact. Title: Re: RT and LT at the BBC Post by: GubGub (Al) on June 24, 2011, 08:53:52 AM Sorry to hear the sound quality isn't so hot on some of the tracks - let's hope it improves as it goes on. It seems just to be the first few tracks from an acoustic John Peel session from 1973. Dramatic improvement after that. Title: Re: RT and LT at the BBC Post by: GubGub (Al) on June 26, 2011, 12:01:50 PM Have waded my way through all of the audio discs now. A valuable addition to the RT collection but there is probably nothing here to supplant versions available elsewhere. It is probably best to listen to to it session by session otherwise the track selection gets a bit repetetive in places.
The undoubted highlight for me is the acoustic session for Andy Kershaw in 1985 including a rivetting Ghosts In The Wind. I really hope some of the Capitol years sessions, including the 100 Club performance shared with Crowded House which, if I recall correctly included a performance of Persuasion with its co-writer. Title: Re: RT and LT at the BBC Post by: Jules Gray on June 26, 2011, 12:15:38 PM The undoubted highlight for me is the acoustic session for Andy Kershaw in 1985 Yeah, that's a great session. My favourite recording of Ghosts In The Wind for example (and one of my favourite RT performances of all time) is from the Live At Crawley disc with Danny Thompson (itself a BBC recording). Title: Re: RT and LT at the BBC Post by: John From Austin on July 15, 2011, 10:11:41 PM I got my copy and can't recommend it enough. Wonderful stuff.
If it hasn't already been mentioned, a substantial portion of the DVD comes from the same performance that was previously released as "Across a Crowded Room" on VHS and laserdisc. I believe this marks the first DVD appearance of this material. The balance comes from OGWT (hello, Jet Plane in a Rocking Chair), a few other UK TV shows, and the complete "A Little Night Music" in pristine video and sound quality. Title: Re: RT and LT at the BBC Post by: Jamie73 on July 16, 2011, 08:19:24 AM It would be great to have an Albions Live at the BBC complete with the 1980 BBC doc.
Title: Re: RT and LT at the BBC Post by: Col D on July 16, 2011, 01:47:31 PM If it hasn't already been mentioned, a substantial portion of the DVD comes from the same performance that was previously released as "Across a Crowded Room" on VHS and laserdisc. I believe this marks the first DVD appearance of this material. Three tracks were included on the 'Live in Providence' DVD, two of which are duplicated on the BBC box. So in total that's eight of the eighteen tracks from the video that have made it to DVD so far, spread over two separate releases. The tracks on the box are from the short-lived 'Late Night in Concert', a typically half-hearted effort by the Beeb really as most of the programmes were just cut down versions of commercially available videos. Title: Re: RT and LT at the BBC Post by: Mr Cat (Lewis) on July 25, 2011, 06:22:53 PM Finally arrived..As mentioned elsewhere some of the recording quality is poor: reminiscent of those live cassettes traded at record fairs in the 80's. Aside from that, much of the performances are excellent, especially the live 1982 and 1986 sets. I also enjoyed the solo acoustic versions of SOTL, Gethsemane and the more recent Warrior and FPB stuff. Yet to watch the DVD. I await the next few volumes of the Capitol era, other live shows (I am sure the in concert programme was an hour or so long)..

Jules I suppose we are used to a more pristine sound: the 1973 session sounds almost as if it is a recording of the recording, whereas the live material sounds really fresh and well recorded. It is only the 73 session which sounds muddy in case anyone gets the impression that the malaise extends into the 80's and beyond material..
