Absolutely wonderful. Congratulations! :) {:-) Thanks for the links Arie! Title: Re: Honorary graduand: Richard Thompson OBE, Composer and Musician Post by: Ollie on July 08, 2011, 12:37:28 AM I think he should replace the berets with mortarboards. :P
Seriously though, well done Mr T, a thoroughly well-deserved couple of gongs. Title: Re: Honorary graduand: Richard Thompson OBE, Composer and Musician Post by: Ian W. on July 08, 2011, 01:42:25 AM With all these fancy frocks, can we expect Glam-Folkrock as the new music ?

(That reminds me of a joke: Q: "Who lead the pedant's revolt?" ; A: "Which Tyler".) Sorry, Peter, is that "nit-pick" with or without a hyphen? :) Title: Re: Honorary graduand: Richard Thompson OBE, Composer and Musician Post by: Peter H-K on July 08, 2011, 02:18:19 PM It looks in the picture as if he's a graduate rather than a graduand .... Sorry, Peter, is that "nit-pick" with or without a hyphen? :) I'd have to consult my style guide. But then, I did misspell "led", so I'll have to go and stand in the corner .... :) Title: Re: Honorary graduand: Richard Thompson OBE, Composer and Musician Post by: Henry Tompkins (Pete) on July 08, 2011, 06:42:53 PM (That reminds me of a joke: Q: "Who lead the pedant's revolt?" ; A: "Which Tyler".) Hah! I like that. ;D Title: Re: Honorary graduand: Richard Thompson OBE, Composer and Musician Post by: ColinB on July 08, 2011, 09:36:53 PM At least he posed for photos unlike a certain Mr Dylan who received an honorary doc from St Andrews in 2004. I was living in the area at the time and by all reports Bob sat through the ceremony looking bored and couldn't wait to get back in his blacked-out people carrrier and bugger off. Miserable so and so.
If they'd given an award to Stephen Stills he would have at least stopped for a round of golf. :) But Aberdeen is a fine city. I studied there myself back in the 80s but at one of the colleges rather than the uni. From Beesweb - Catch of the Day... "Next day was the Graduation dinner, with all the Honorary Graduates, heads of Faculty, and City dignitaries, and a good excuse to get the kilt on." RT in a kilt? I wonder if he wore it in the traditional manner?! ;D Title: Re: Honorary graduand: Richard Thompson OBE, Composer and Musician Post by: Ollie on July 08, 2011, 10:59:36 PM I'm sure I've seen a piccie of RT in a kilt before. Cropredy 95?

It's in Patrick Humphries's RT biog. A picture of him and Danny Thompson, "The McThompson Twins". Title: Re: Honorary graduand: Richard Thompson OBE, Composer and Musician Post by: davidmjs on July 20, 2011, 11:17:02 PM Has anyone seen Dr Thompson on any of his recent UK and Irish dates? No, but I've listened to one, and bloody good it sounds... Title: Re: Honorary graduand: Richard Thompson OBE, Composer and Musician Post by: Chris on July 21, 2011, 05:25:13 AM He's reported as being on fine form!
Unfortunately, a household emergency kept me away from Dartford. Bum. Title: Re: Honorary graduand: Richard Thompson OBE, Composer and Musician Post by: JJ (Joanna) on July 21, 2011, 07:36:21 AM R.T. OBE was in concert at The Orchard Theatre in Dartford last night. First time I've seen him in a theatre atmosphere, it was fantastic. Third song in and all the house lights came on. The fire alarm had been activated and we all had to stand outside in the car park...you've guessed it, it was pouring with rain!!
Once the concert resumed, like the professional he is, he continued with the 3rd verse of the song he was part way through. To top it all he played a magnificant Vincent Black Lightning....very apt! Dartford is home town to Mick Jagger so he played a medley of Stones songs too. :) :) Sandy's 'Who knows where the time goes' was a tear jerker. What a range of emotions he portrays through both his work and his guitar. I am converted! ;) Title: Re: Honorary graduand: Richard Thompson OBE, Composer and Musician Post by: Mag T on July 21, 2011, 11:03:35 AM Dartford last night......I thought you might be there JJ, so looked out for you, but didn't see you anywhere! I quite enjoyed the impromptu 'open air' interval...bit damp though. Never had that happen before, especially having to wait for the fire brigade to turn up, presumably just to press a button of some sort, before things were allowed to continue.
On stage...one man + one guitar = absolute magic! An utterly undefinable equation. The sounds created from that lone guitar, were just remarkable. At certain points in the performance, if you weren't actually looking at the stage, it seemed as though at least three people were playing. Then add in the RT's amazingly strong and (at times) rather strange voice = total brilliance! ...... Extremely glad we went :) |
