Title: The Last Farewell - August 4th 1979 Post by: hurdygurdyman (Paul) on August 22, 2011, 03:55:23 PM Just having a furtle through my stuff and found the newspaper-style Cropredy programme from 1979, Volume No 1 (FINAL). Concert started at 4pm and included Bag O'Nails (Banbury), The Kitchen Band (Croydon), The Rollright Stones, Graham Smiths Greek Section, The Tanglefoot Band (Amberley Folk Club) Simon & Andrew Loake (Daventry Folk Club), Akeley Morris Men, Steve Ashley & Chris Leslie, Earl Okin, Tony O'Leary and Fairport Convention plus many surprise guests (? - I don't remember it raining).
Great quote " As to the future, who knows?...It might be nice to to have an annual Reunion Concert in Cropredy...Perhaps we should get together once a year and see if we can still play" It's a bit of a blur, (possibly, as an added attraction, "There will be a wine bar manned by volunteers on behalf of Help the Aged") but I recall it being an excellent fest. Who would have thought that all those years later I'd still be on the field. Any others TAWers standing on that field with me then? Title: Re: The Last Farewell - August 4th 1979 Post by: Barry on August 22, 2011, 03:59:14 PM Yes, I was there too. Although it was a different field to the one used now. It was a nice day.

And that taught you a lesson ;) Title: Re: The Last Farewell - August 4th 1979 Post by: Chris on August 22, 2011, 04:03:24 PM Indeed, I thought they were best on the bill, other than the headliners!

This was on account of some ill advised cider imbibement. Title: Re: The Last Farewell - August 4th 1979 Post by: folkicons on August 22, 2011, 05:11:56 PM Conscious and paying attention. Even missed the Theakston's bar giving away free beer. Booked the Kitchen Band and Steve & Chris for the folk club I ran at the time as a result of seeing them at the festival. Still got the t-shirts.

As it turns out, given the choice now, I'd rather have been at Croppers. Also, anyone know what happened to Simon and Andrew Loake? I saw them at Broughton Castle and thought that they were really good. Title: Re: The Last Farewell - August 4th 1979 Post by: Chris on August 22, 2011, 07:12:12 PM Andrew is definitely still playing - I recall seeing his name reasonably recently somewhere.
Title: Re: The Last Farewell - August 4th 1979 Post by: hurdygurdyman (Paul) on August 22, 2011, 08:19:39 PM Simon is still out gigging with a band called Lebedek and another one with his brothers. I do recall booking him around that time in a ceilidh band called The Big Banana Band - might be that one.
Title: Re: The Last Farewell - August 4th 1979 Post by: quodlibet (Ian) on August 23, 2011, 11:58:11 AM That was certainly a fab & emotional day & a great time had by all. Never thought I'd see them perform together again & had no idea they were about to perform in Italy the following week. Farewell indeed! I'm sure I'm not alone in hankering after those early days of small crowds, low key line-ups & a truly intimate atmosphere, however impractical that might be in reality.

Little did we know, eh? Title: Re: The Last Farewell - August 4th 1979 Post by: PLW (Peter) on August 23, 2011, 04:03:42 PM Yep, I was there too. I wasn't at Croppers I was at Knebworth that day. I had seen Fairport previously and enjoyed their set, but a lot of the crowd were not that interested in them. To atone for the sin of missing the farewell gig I have been to every festival at Cropredy/Broughton Castle Since then. |
