Recorded live to DAT in 1994 at the Assembly Rooms in Derby, the Paul Robeson Theatre in Hounslow, the Birmingham Library Theatre and the Chipping Norton Theatre. Ric, Fred Thelonius Baker & Vikki Clayton very much in a jazzy mode, with some lovely versions of songs old & new (to me) and a couple of jaw-dropping fretless bass features. On the "Speaking Volumes" label (SVL02CD), tracks are as follows: 1. Lucy's Lament (Clayton) 5.30 2. Granma's Hands (Bill Withers) 4.25 3. Lovely Joan (trad. arr. Sanders/Baker/Clayton) 5.02 4. Hen Hoe Down (Baker) - fretless bass solo 4.07 5. She Belongs To Me (Bob Dylan) 3.48 6. Thursday's Improvisation (Sanders/Baker) 11.45 7. The Hiring Fair (Ralph McTell) 6.46 8. The Birth of Robin Hood (Clayton/Hatt) 5.48 9. Crazy Man Michael (Thompson/Swarbrick) 6.05 10. Toccata and Blues (Bach/Baker) 15.20 11. A Little Turbulence (Sanders/Baker) 2.31 Well worth seeking out IMHO. It was probably around early nineties, an excellent night.

I seem to recall wondering if Ric was going to manage to get his chair to levitate, such was the energy of his playing. Title: Re: Sanders, Baker & Clayton: "Carried Away" Post by: bassline (Mike) on December 31, 2011, 03:40:52 PM That was a good little trio there.I too saw them in a tiny little room upstairs in a pub, and loved it.Fred's Toccata on the bass was stunning, as was Vikki's singing and as per the previous comment Ric was giving it some welly, striding around the stage like he normally does, although in his head 'cos he was sitting down.
Talking to him that night was the first time I had spoken to any FC member,now I come to think of it. I was glad of this cd release because it had Lucy's Lament on it, which I love,but it was omitted from Vikki's Midsummer Cushion album due to a mispress.In fact,I bought the mispress cd at that gig. Must dig it out and play it in the car.Thanks for the reminder.. |
