Title: Closing Time
Post by: mickf on March 01, 2012, 10:06:11 AM
I've always enjoyed Fairport's version of Leonard Cohen's 'Closing Time' which first appeared on the 'Jewel in the Crown' album. My one disappointment is that I've never heard them do it live.  Even when they toured after the album was released they didn't do it when I saw them.

Have they ever done it live and, if they did, are there any live versions out there?

I don't ever recall that "live" - also how often did they tour "Home is Where the Heart Is" from the same album?

I could be misremembering this but I seem to call a Mojo review of a concert from that era that mentioned them doing it. Would be great if they brought it back though

I'm reasonably sure they did that live on the Jewel In The Crown tour, 1995, as an encore. Seem to recall they wanted it to replace MOTL even? But I could be wrong.

They definitely played Closing Time around that period. I love the original of Home Is Where the Heart is but was always disappointed by Fairport's verssion. I always found it somewhat anaemic.

Indeed. The Clive & Christine version live with the mid-80s R.T. Band. Just sublime.

I also recall "Closing Time" being performed live quite regularly, for a while.

Towards the end of the set wasn't it?  Hence the 'Matty Groves is coming up next' near the end of the song.

Well, thanks for the info - strange I never saw them do it at the time.  As far as 'Home is Where The Heart Is', it's never been one of my favourites.

Home Is Where The Heart Is at least has a little bit of lead guitar from Peggy...always a treat when it happens.

My favourite song from that album which I have never heard played live was The Islands.  Has it ever been?

Don't know, but I think my Dad would explode with excitement if they did do it any time soon.
