Title: Avoid London
Post by: Nigel no longer of Lysander on March 16, 2012, 12:48:56 PM
The thread in another corner of this board discussing the crime against music that is Steeleye's Somewhere In London reminded me of Fairport's charge sheet :- London River, London Danny and London Apprentice !! Apart from The Clash's London Calling are there any other songs with London in the title which FC or SS could tackle ?

Cheers Nigel

Dark Streets Of London and also London Girl, by The Pogues.

Though maybe they should get into the 'burbs a bit and have a go at Guns In Brixton by The Clash.

See, I'm not sure. There are some songs I'm precious about, and Werewolves of London is one of them. I adore that song. I can't imagine anyone doing anything that wouldn't suffer by comparison to Warren Zevon.

Is there a better line in songsmithing than, "I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic's, his hair was perfect"?

Breakfast in Mayfair - oh hang on, they've done that... and Staines Morris (on House Full).

Towers of London (XTC)?

I have often thought that FC could do something with Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner. I think the words of Zevons songs are admirably suited to Simon's love of language.

Way off topic, but how do you feel about Kid Rock?

Even further off topic, we saw him live last year and he was really entertaining..The live version of "that" song (Sweet Home Werewolves of All Summer Long) was done as a largely acoustic number..

Back on topic, how about Blur's London Loves?  The tempo etc would suit the current FC..

I thin that means I win the thread. I will put it on the mantlepiece.

I don't really, but I like Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Just to redress the balance, it's not all bad.

Steeleye Span (where the debate started) of course did 'London' on Rocket Cottage.  I think that one is a bit like marmite, as I've heard a lot of people say they don't care for it much and others seem to love it - personally I like it, but prefer the live versions I've heard to the album version.
