Thought I would just update everyone on recent happenings and occurrences..

More news:
I have just licensed TWS to Tonefloat records who will re-release it on vinyl in Europe, but this time with the Jackie Morris Artwork.

And I have also licensed TWS to Gonzo MultiMedia for release in the US again with Jackie's beautiful artwork.. Neither will be out for a bit as they have to be manufactured - but soon..... ;D

The new album is nearly finished, and is just awaiting strings  (violin, viola, cello and double bass) to be added to some of the songs.
I hope it will be out later this year or early next year. After the last album that I created which was finished, mixed and mastered, and then the collaborators refused their permission for me to use their music, so that was 2 years of my I'm-not-getting-any-younger-life wasted, I am pleased that I have had the encouragement and support to start again.

This new album will be lovely. Well I reckon so anyway ;D ::)

They are Alistair Murphy,(keyboards and guitar) Mark Fletcher-( bass), Jeremy Salmon (electric Guitar) and Rachel Hall (violin) all of whom helped me to create Talking With Strangers, and all of them except Rachel are helping me with the new album. And of course Tim Bowness will be featuring and assisting me with the vocals..  ;D Alistair produced TWS with Tim and is producing the new album. He's very good... :)

On first sight I thought that was your arm!  ;D

It was a lovely gig  :) A bit of "a game of two halves" in which we discovered Jude to be somewhat dissimilar from the rest of the record label ("The Use of Ashes" is my new nightmare!  :o ) but Jude's headline set sounded great and went down a storm.

The band were great; really professional and absolutely right for the music. There were some really nice changes of mood from guitar/bass to double-bass/fiddle to keyboards and back again. It all fitted well together around Jude's and Tim's vocals.

I'm away travelling at the moment so can't write much at the moment I'm afraid. I hope I can reveal a little more about the gig in a little while...

That article has caused a bit of a stir over on the Floyd forum I'm a member of.A Russian Floydy is all excited about what tune it was that caused the piano at Sound Techniques to have a battering:

Her quote: "It was a thing i'd written at home on my piano ("Portfolio"). Tyger added a bass line, and then the rest joined in. The poor studio piano was horrendously out of tune because the Floyd had been using it day before, and it was very tired... ".

(Consensus says it was recording for The Commitee soundtrack.)

He accompanied his post with a link to the YT vid of Portfolio.I used the opportunity to plug Jude's cover of See Emily Play. ;)

Being a bit jaded right now I have to say that when Harpsong came on my ithingy the other day I had to sit still for the whole thing and it lifted my spirits. Jude you have made an amazing piece of music, it always surprises me that you are not better known.

Well if anyone is interested in my review I think it is an absolutely lovely record. I find myself humming Featherdancing and doing a little twirl (in the privacy of my own home of course)! It's also nice to have an album with a booklet with all the words and who's doing what along with artwork that represents, and provides a theme, for the music.

Proper music from proper musicians (and purchased from a "Proper" online source).

Thank you Tim, I was beginning to wonder whether anyone here had heard it, but it probably got swamped by other releases  ;D

It's a splendid album that I haven't spent nearly enough time with to date (only listened to it twice).  It's without a doubt my favourite of your 21st century releases  :)

October issue, out now has a rare interview with Roy Harper. By which I mean full interviews with him seem to be rare, these days. Fortunately my local library still carries Mojo.

The issue of Mojo I am in is out on the 24th September. I'm looking forward to reading it :-) (and seeing what I said ::) )

Also today I was interviewed by Pete Paphides for a radio 4  documentary. Another charming man. That was a bit of a giggle..
Not sure when that is on air but doubtless I will hear.. Soon I think.. ;D

Really?!!!!  Where on earth is this profligate part of the world?   :)  Lancashire Libraries (where I work) haven't shut any branches (yet) but the magazines and half the papers went a couple of years ago...

Newcastle library only recently stopped keeping Record Collector magazine, due to council cuts which p**d me off a bit, as I've long since stopped paying money out for such bad journalism/writing. Mojo is good, but even with the covermount CD I find it too dear. We can also read, for free, Q magazine, which is just rock stars in their underwear, but the CD reviews aren't too bad.

Journalist and broadcaster Pete Paphides delves into the BBC auditions process for aspiring bands of the 1950s and 1960s such as The Rolling Stones, Elton John and Pink Floyd.

Throughout this era, any artist hoping to achieve wider national recognition would have to try and secure national radio exposure. To do this, they would have to meet the exacting standards of a small but powerful board of assessors within the BBC.

Producers and sound engineers of the time remember the sessions, and musicians such as Peter Hammill of Van der Graaf Generator, Judy Dyble of Fairport Convention and Alvin Stardust recall their audition processes.

The audition panels' notes are carefully kept to this day in the BBC Archive. Nick Drake's notes, for example read as follows: "Suitable to broadcast, but would probably only be in specialist late night programmes. Type of artist who would appear on 'John Peel' record label – underground, folky. YES."

Among the artists the BBC weren't initially convinced about were The Rolling Stones, while the errant behaviour of other groups' recording BBC sessions (for example Pink Floyd) threatened their relationship with the Corporation.

A lot of the studio engineers and recording people wore brown lab coats in those days. They were serious scientists you see.. :o

Most of the scientists i know tend to spend most of thier time out the lab in a bar or playing in bands.

Are you sure Jude because I just listened and I heard someone say they wiped the tapes. They could have released a series called Accepted and rejected by the BBC, but if it would have sold..... The one song by The Rolling Stones which they saved sounded rather tame.

Well yes that's probably what happened to the studio auditions. Mine was in a big church hall with lots of other 'acts' Not sure they were recorded. But then I wasn't really looking  :-\

Mastering details on the LP, Judy??  

Well, it's being remastered for vinyl by the excellent man who mastered the CD, Jeremy Carroll. Is that what you want to know? Otherwise it all gets a bit technical for poor me  ::) :D

Me too, but I believe sometimes an analogue master is used for the Lp and sometimes not??

As it was recorded digitally I assume there isn't an analogue master, but the vinyl master has been made leaving space for the discretion of the disc cutter. Apparently. And more than that delves into the terrifying worlds of mastering and disc cutting and I am lost.. Think you'll need to ask a disc cutting person or a mastering person for further info  :o

The next gig at the Watermargin WMJazzclub is Sunday the 16th March,at 2.30pm, so plenty of time to get there and back on trains and things

The first one is on Sunday 31st August at the Watermargin WMJazz, (although I believe they are changing the name to Jazz at the Margin)

Anyway it's an afternoon thing starting at 3pm and finishing about 5pm and we will be celebrating the launch of the album Judy Dyble Live at the WM, which has been on sale for a little while but nevermind :-)

Having premiered the performance of the entire Harpsong in Norwich, we will be repeating the experience which again will include the playing of the Prog Sopranino Recorder, by yours truly. Ahem!  ;D

The infamous Anthology- Judy Dyble -Gathering The Threads (Fifty Years of Stuff) which has been in gestation for the last seven years and is a 3CD set of all the oddities and strangenesses which I have been involved in and which have turned up over the years..

Including tracks from Judy and the Folkmen in 1964 via the very odd MirrorMaster Ad, through bits of Swordfish and Sand Snowman to a Jackie McAuley song which hasn't been heard before (unless you were in a pub in South London where I sang it with him once!)

Some of the 250 copies will arriving tomorrow and once I have checked them they will be sent out.

Well, it was an enormous project so there was always going to be something wrong  :-\

I could have left it as it was because only a very few people in the world would have known what was missing, but I would always have felt uncomfortable. So best to get it sorted properly. I am ignoring a mistake on the tracklisting. Ahem. That would mean having the whole thing done again!!  :o

Yes, you can't leave it out there with a mastering error - it would always annoy you.  The typo will be annoying enough, methinks.

I still run cassettes and like the retro-ness of them. Maintaining a good  player (so it won't mess up your tapes) is a bit costly, but then vinyl is also a demanding mistress, and I still love it, too.

Don't play cassettes much at all though I do have a player plus one with a radio. Must go through my tapes sometime.

Cassette players and tapes long consigned to the past here.  Don't miss 'em.

Finally started reading this after getting a copy at the launch. Thoroughly enjoying reading about all the local places - will be walking past Ashley Hutchings house on the way home and very close to Dyble Mansions. We could start a Judy Dyble trail - starting and ending at the Starting Gate pub.   :)

Why a 'happy' smiley after the sad news about TH, Jude?

I just received and unwrapped my GZD #10 and I must admit it looks very nice, which of course it should for that price. I love that it's handwritten. The cassette is a nice colour and has some notables on, and some people I've never heard of. Yourself, Jude, represented by 'Nobody Loves You etc', I think.

I thought I sent him 'Satisfied Mind'. Ah well my copy will arrive at some point  ;D

You're right -  my memory was at fault. I played iide one of the tape last night and it's all insane psych/stoner stuff I've not heard of. Read some of the interviews and they're very good.

Trader Horne played a lovely hour long set in the Walled Garden at a soggy Green Man on Saturday.  They were fabulous.  I was very happy.  Thanks Jude (et al).  There's almost certainly better ones online, but I may even have some photos.

(Had a rather surreal 4 hour slot on Saturday afternoon...started with the Clarets' outstanding result, led on to the Unthanks who made me cry, Trader Horne who made me all nostalgic and glowing for a time I never really knew, and proceeded onto Michael Rother who played one of the most mindblowing sets I've ever had the privilege to witness.  'Twas a great day and a bloody good festival - I went for the week!)

Here's a picture of us playing.. It was very wet and muddy and hilly but the people were lovely and we were all highly impressed with the staying power of the drenched audience!

Full disclosure, I paid for a copy from Amazon, but it was really intended for Lady YaBB (Viv).

It's Viv that is the real fan of this music style, but I've found myself playing it repeatedly. It really does stand out from a lot of recent releases. Mostly theses days it's only artists with a heap of funding behind them that get to release albums that sound this polished.

Generally I'd say the music is 'lovely', but there are tracks that really stand out as exceptional. Lyrically there's 'See What Your Words', well under three minutes, so you have to play it several times. 'Newborn Creatures', slightly strange.

Overall it's fresh and different. I've checked and it will be available from the CD tent at Cropredy. I suggest buying a copy.



  

Here is a bit of early notice about my first gig in 2019
It's at the Troubadour in London on Wednesday 13th February 2019 and it is to celebrate my 70th birthday. Tickets are available from this link.. at the moment the tickets include a 3 course meal as well as the show and my guests will be Jackie McAuley and his brother Brendan

Jackie and Brendan will be doing a short set of their own and will be joining me and the Perfect Strangers in a couple of Trader Horne songs to also celebrate 50 years since Trader Horne came into being..
Yes I know it's the middle of the week and in London, but it's not everyday I am 70  :D
So I look forward to perhaps seeing some of you there  :)

That was a lovely gig! Jude was on great form and looked happy as Larry surrounded by band and a venue full of friends.

Good to hear Trader Horn songs played with Jack, and bits of GGF (&M) alongside Jude's now extensive back catalogue - I Talk To The Wind and Harp Song were highlights for me.

Nice to chat with Dan, Mike and Jo too, and I hope Sylvia has held on carefully to that £20.

And with my very special guest.. Adam Long, co- founder of the Reduced Shakespeare Company, writer of Radio 4's Condensed Histories and much much more.
He'll be telling stories and singing a couple of songs and he is totally brilliant!

There’s a review of the live album just been posted on The Afterword blog.
Given the song title, the eleven minute Sisterhood Of Ruralists sounds like it could be rather pretentious and precious, but, dedicated to four friends of Judy’s who are craftswomen working in gold, silver, copper and glass, is rather lovely. I really like the changing moods, expressed through the varying dynamics of the musician’s performances. The string section and band work beautifully together and I think Judy’s vocals on this song is her standout performance on the album.

Very positive review in this month's Classic Rock for Weavings Of A Silver Magic. Scores the album 8/10.

Describes Judy's voice as "like singing porcelain" and calls the album "a great representation of a brilliant artist at work."
