Title: News from the world of Judy Dyble. That's me, Jude... Post by: jude on July 24, 2012, 06:22:46 PM Thought I would just update everyone on recent happenings and occurrences..
The very lovely Schroedinger's Cat a.k.a. Jane Merrick and her equally splendid husband, redid and updated my website with more stuff than ever... and I now have a shop http://www.judydybleshop.com/ where copies of Talking With Strangers CDs and Fragile 7" picture vinyls can be bought, but with the added joyfulness of a signed postcard with some sort of 'hello/nattering from me' given with each purchase. ::) More news: I have just licensed TWS to Tonefloat records who will re-release it on vinyl in Europe, but this time with the Jackie Morris Artwork. And I have also licensed TWS to Gonzo MultiMedia for release in the US again with Jackie's beautiful artwork.. Neither will be out for a bit as they have to be manufactured - but soon..... ;D The new album is nearly finished, and is just awaiting strings (violin, viola, cello and double bass) to be added to some of the songs. I hope it will be out later this year or early next year. After the last album that I created which was finished, mixed and mastered, and then the collaborators refused their permission for me to use their music, so that was 2 years of my I'm-not-getting-any-younger-life wasted, I am pleased that I have had the encouragement and support to start again. This new album will be lovely. Well I reckon so anyway ;D ::) Title: Re: News from the world of Judy Dyble. That's me, Jude... Post by: Poor Will (Bill) on July 24, 2012, 06:41:52 PM Great news Jude!

That's me, Jude... Post by: Shane (Skirky) on August 01, 2012, 11:16:10 AM Ahem - if I may briefly interject, after some years in doldrum invisibilty the rarely heard "Little No-One" featuring Jude on vocals is now available as a download from http://songsfromthebluehouse.bandcamp.com/ in return for however much you're prepared to pay for it. Once again, thanks and felicitations to Dame Judy for her time and talent, neither of which we deserve, but for which we are obviously hugely thankful. Commercial interjection over. [;-)

Post by: Nick on October 30, 2012, 02:43:26 PM only his arm is visible! On first sight I thought that was your arm! ;D It was a lovely gig :) A bit of "a game of two halves" in which we discovered Jude to be somewhat dissimilar from the rest of the record label ("The Use of Ashes" is my new nightmare! :o ) but Jude's headline set sounded great and went down a storm. The band were great; really professional and absolutely right for the music. There were some really nice changes of mood from guitar/bass to double-bass/fiddle to keyboards and back again. It all fitted well together around Jude's and Tim's vocals. I'm away travelling at the moment so can't write much at the moment I'm afraid. I hope I can reveal a little more about the gig in a little while... Cheers Nick Title: Re: News from the world of Judy Dyble. That's me, Jude... It's also nice to have an album with a booklet with all the words and who's doing what along with artwork that represents, and provides a theme, for the music.
Proper music from proper musicians (and purchased from a "Proper" online source). Title: Re: News from the world of Judy Dyble. That's me, Jude... Where on earth is this profligate part of the world? :) Lancashire Libraries (where I work) haven't shut any branches (yet) but the magazines and half the papers went a couple of years ago... Newcastle library only recently stopped keeping Record Collector magazine, due to council cuts which p**d me off a bit, as I've long since stopped paying money out for such bad journalism/writing. Mojo is good, but even with the covermount CD I find it too dear. We can also read, for free, Q magazine, which is just rock stars in their underwear, but the CD reviews aren't too bad. Title: Re: News from the world of Judy Dyble. That's me, Jude... Post by: jude on October 14, 2013, 01:06:35 PM I'm going to be a nattering on BBC Radio 4 on the 21st October. 4-4.30pm
http://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/proginfo/2013/43/r4-auditioning-for-auntie-monday.html Auditioning For Auntie Journalist and broadcaster Pete Paphides delves into the BBC auditions process for aspiring bands of the 1950s and 1960s such as The Rolling Stones, Elton John and Pink Floyd. Throughout this era, any artist hoping to achieve wider national recognition would have to try and secure national radio exposure. To do this, they would have to meet the exacting standards of a small but powerful board of assessors within the BBC. Producers and sound engineers of the time remember the sessions, and musicians such as Peter Hammill of Van der Graaf Generator, Judy Dyble of Fairport Convention and Alvin Stardust recall their audition processes. The audition panels' notes are carefully kept to this day in the BBC Archive. Nick Drake's notes, for example read as follows: "Suitable to broadcast, but would probably only be in specialist late night programmes. Type of artist who would appear on 'John Peel' record label – underground, folky. YES." Among the artists the BBC weren't initially convinced about were The Rolling Stones, while the errant behaviour of other groups' recording BBC sessions (for example Pink Floyd) threatened their relationship with the Corporation. I recall "I Still Remember" being particularly lovely and I happen to know that a recording exists... http://www.play.com/Music/CD/4-/3440862/-/Product.html ::) Sadly Skirky, Simon has refused me permission to use any of those demo recordings ever, as he wishes to, at some stage, use the music for his own compositions. So I am afraid the answer is probably no :( I will re-use the words though and with the help of equally talented musicians find an even lovelier tune for that particular song. The first one is on Sunday 31st August at the Watermargin WMJazz, (although I believe they are changing the name to Jazz at the Margin) Anyway it's an afternoon thing starting at 3pm and finishing about 5pm and we will be celebrating the launch of the album Judy Dyble Live at the WM, which has been on sale for a little while but nevermind :-) Having premiered the performance of the entire Harpsong in Norwich, we will be repeating the experience which again will include the playing of the Prog Sopranino Recorder, by yours truly. Ahem! ;D http://clubwm.co.uk/jazz/31st-august-judy-dyble/ And at the end of September, on Sunday the 28th, I will be playing with a rather reduced and more acoustic band (on account of the venue being a bit titchy) at Manor Farm Musical Frivolities Parlour Concert at Ardley in Oxfordshire These concerts are by invitation and to be invited you will need to contact them by email - details are below. It is a wonderful venue. I shall be singing in the milking parlour which has very comfortable sofas and all that. Have a look at the photos :-) http://www.mfmf.co.uk/ I hope to see some of you at one of the other of these gigs. I think they may be the last I will do this year... I could have left it as it was because only a very few people in the world would have known what was missing, but I would always have felt uncomfortable. So best to get it sorted properly. I am ignoring a mistake on the tracklisting. Ahem. That would mean having the whole thing done again!! :o Title: Re: News from the world of Judy Dyble. That's me, Jude... Title: Re: News from the world of Judy Dyble. That's me, Jude... Post by: fstix (Michael) on March 09, 2015, 07:46:57 AM Early this morning (my time) I had the great pleasure of a long Skype interview with Judy for my radio show, on the new anthology and more. Talk also went to Jimi Hendrix, Robert Fripp, the changing (and yet not) nature of the music biz, "imposter syndrome" and much more.
The interview is all ready (already) to go to air this Thursday night, Adelaide time - which is 10.30am GMT. Tune in via 93.7FM locally or www.threedradio.com for the live webcast. Other worldwide times can be found at https://tinyurl.com/kpn7cvw I decided it can be one long special - a bit over an hour - rather than spread it over 2 weeks. Needless to say, several songs from the "Gathering The Threads" anthology will be played as well. 'Earth Recordings is elated to announce that we will be working with Judy Dyble on a series of upcoming projects, covering her entire career to date (and beyond!). Earlier this year, Judy issued her 'Gathering The Threads', a 3CD anthology of all the fragments that make up her - frankly extraordinary - career. This Autumn will see the first disc of this triptych released as a deluxe vinyl compilation of her earlier work, 'Anthology - Part One'. Comprising rare, unreleased and hard-to-find tracks - many of which have never before been issued on wax.' Jolly pleased I am ;D Title: Re: News from the world of Judy Dyble. That's me, Jude... Judy Dyble and the Band of Perfect Strangers + Jackie McAuley and Friends Half Moon - Putney, London Sunday 21 August 20:00 £10adv/ £12 door I've a big clash with Folk East....going to have to juggle big time to make this..... ::) :P Guess there's likely to be a Trader Horne set too?..... http://www.musicglue.com/half-moon-putney/events/21-aug-16-judy-dyble-and-the-band-of-perfect-strangers-half-moon--putney/ Quote Judy's past career has been eclectic. From being one of the original founding members of the extraordinary UK folk/rock band 'Fairport Convention', after the first and rockiest of their albums, she left to join with fellow London based musician, and later founder member of Foreigner, Ian McDonald which resulted in a collaboration with the musicians who later collectively became King Crimson – Robert Fripp, Peter and Mike Giles. Line up Judy Dyble and the Band of Perfect Strangers After recording a few songs with them which later surfaced as ‘The Brondesbury Tapes’, she became one half of the stunning, if short lived duo Trader Horne, whose eponymous (and only) LP 'Morning Way' is still considered to be a classic of its day. After a short, but jolly collaboration with Lol Coxhill and Canterbury musicians Steve and Phil Miller as DC & the MBs, Judy promptly retired to raise a family, until 30 years later she returned to music to create new music in a way that hadn’t even been dreamed of in 1970. The internet had arrived in the intervening years and with it the ability to record remotely and seamlessly weave contributions from everywhere into a beautiful tapestry of songs. Thus ‘Talking With Strangers’ was born in 2009, ‘Flow and Change’ released in 2013, and ‘Live at WMJazz’ in 2014 and ‘Gathering The Threads’ her Anthology of odd music from 50 years in 2015. The duo Trader Horne reunited in Nov 2015 with a brilliantly received one off performance of ‘Morning Way’ at Bush Hall in London. She has since finished writing her autobiography, ‘An Accidental Musician’ published in May 2016 by Soundcheck Books. Tonight Judy and her Band of Perfect Strangers will be supported by the other half of the Trader Horne duo, Jackie McAuley and friends which includes his brother Brendan McAuley, the master of the Uillean pipes, who will play a brilliant acoustic set. ‘Her cut-glass diction and delicate voice gives emphasis and clarity to lyrics that elegantly describe nature's mutability and portents therein’ - Sid Smith. ‘once the lady begins to weave her spell, we're taken to another place entirely’.- Grant Moon ‘Judy Dyble is real and rare a practitioner strain of English Magic Music’.. ‘Beautiful and needed now more than ever’ –Gavin Martin ‘Judy's special, thought-provoking music is a contemplation of what it means to be human; an awareness of life receding; a reminder of the heartlessness at the heart of existence’ -Lesley Ann Jones ‘Judy Dyble is an artist who is very much at the peak of her powers now’ –Oz Hardwicke ‘her haunting, often time-stopping voice’..-Kris Needs Jackie McAuley and Friends Guitarist and keyboard player Jackie McAuley has had one of the most varied and creative careers of any of the great musicians who emerged from Belfast in the 60s. And currently he is on a roll, with the formation of a new band. As an original member of Them he recorded and toured with Van Morrison behind legendary hit records like ‘Baby Please Don’t Go’ ‘Here Comes The Night’ and “Gloria” sharing stages with The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and others. During his time with 'Them' in London he hung out with Legendary Rocker Gene Vincent. "It was Gene who convinced me to write my own songs"...Later when Van Morrison went solo McAuley joined Paul Brady in Dublin band The Kult. It was also in Dublin where he met and became lifelong friends with ace guitarist Henry McCullough. As leader of The Belfast Gypsies he recorded an album, Them Belfast Gypsies, produced by infamous L.A. scene-maker Kim Fowley, which has been hailed as one of the rawest and most powerful to emerge during the 60S blues boom. McAuley’s psych-folk duo Trader Horne, with ex-Fairport Convention singer Judy Dyble, only released one album, Morning Way, in 1970, but the album, much played by John Peel at the time, has, astonishingly, been reissued at least seven times since. I look forward to getting it -- I've seen GZD before and this looks like a fine issue. e https://www.spincds.com/coming-soon/galactic-zoo-dossier-10-magazine-cassette I just received and unwrapped my GZD #10 and I must admit it looks very nice, which of course it should for that price. I love that it's handwritten. The cassette is a nice colour and has some notables on, and some people I've never heard of. Yourself, Jude, represented by 'Nobody Loves You etc', I think. That's me, Jude... Post by: davidmjs on August 22, 2016, 02:24:50 PM Trader Horne played a lovely hour long set in the Walled Garden at a soggy Green Man on Saturday. They were fabulous. I was very happy. Thanks Jude (et al). There's almost certainly better ones online, but I may even have some photos.
(Had a rather surreal 4 hour slot on Saturday afternoon...started with the Clarets' outstanding result, led on to the Unthanks who made me cry, Trader Horne who made me all nostalgic and glowing for a time I never really knew, and proceeded onto Michael Rother who played one of the most mindblowing sets I've ever had the privilege to witness. 'Twas a great day and a bloody good festival - I went for the week!) Title: Re: News from the world of Judy Dyble. That's me, Jude... It was very wet and muddy and hilly but the people were lovely and we were all highly impressed with the staying power of the drenched audience!

Post by: YaBB Master (Colin) on August 02, 2018, 10:54:14 PM Full disclosure, I paid for a copy from Amazon, but it was really intended for Lady YaBB (Viv).
It's Viv that is the real fan of this music style, but I've found myself playing it repeatedly. It really does stand out from a lot of recent releases. Mostly theses days it's only artists with a heap of funding behind them that get to release albums that sound this polished. Generally I'd say the music is 'lovely', but there are tracks that really stand out as exceptional. Lyrically there's 'See What Your Words', well under three minutes, so you have to play it several times. 'Newborn Creatures', slightly strange. Overall it's fresh and different. I've checked and it will be available from the CD tent at Cropredy. I suggest buying a copy. Title: Re: News from the world of Judy Dyble. That's me, Jude... Post by: Shane (Skirky) on April 07, 2020, 09:09:39 PM There’s a review of the live album just been posted on The Afterword blog.
Given the song title, the eleven minute Sisterhood Of Ruralists sounds like it could be rather pretentious and precious, but, dedicated to four friends of Judy’s who are craftswomen working in gold, silver, copper and glass, is rather lovely. I really like the changing moods, expressed through the varying dynamics of the musician’s performances. The string section and band work beautifully together and I think Judy’s vocals on this song is her standout performance on the album. Title: Re: News from the world of Judy Dyble. That's me, Jude...
