I'm afraid we couldn't get round to listening live but we set the tv recorder to record the whole show - Thank goodness for the 'about half past 8' prompt.   I get the feeling that young Aled really does like Ralph - even if he does constantly remind Ralph that he grew up listening to Alphabet Zoo.   ;)

Turned on the car radio (R2) this afternoon about 4.30 and heard the familiar sounding voice of Ralph chatting away on Johnnie Walker's show. So, good ole listen again later.

So where were those 'in the know' alerting us to this, come on keep up you lot!  ;) :D

I heard this, but i was puzzled by JW's mention of a 'new Ralph Mc Tell album.'  ???

Easily confused here...  ::) Havn't had chance to listen again yet but John are you saying it was an 'old' interview yesterday on JW show, therefore Alan, the 'new' album maybe his Songs for Six strings which as we know are slowly being released just to tease us all!  ;D ;)

JJ, yesterday's broadcast was live (or at least the first broadcast).  The Google alert I got pointed to an old show, so I did not pass on the 'news'.

Alan, you are right to be puzzled. The CD JW referred to is a promotional album of five songs on the theme of London and England for this Olympic year. "An English Heartbeat" will also be the title of Ralph's 2012 UK tour. The album was briefly available online as a download, but it seems it was not intended for public release.

I put the following in the Radio Times section on April 25 when this part of the board didn't exist.  Now it's back, John suggested I put the interview up again, which I've just done - at https://rapidshare.com/files/553115698/RalphMcTellObscByApr242012edit.mp3  Again, it's only up for around 30 days, maybe someone can put it elsewhere after that...?

---

I had the pleasure of interviewing Ralph McTell earlier today as he begins his latest Australian tour, and have just uploaded it to Rapidshare.  Hear him talk about how he acquired his first Robert Johnson LP, his love for the guitar, why a farewell tour doesn't necessarily mean goodbye, why he wasn't very happy at the time with the French & Saunders "Trial Of Ralph McTell" skit (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EIeAsOpavzE), and much more.

Nearly 40 mins(!) - nearly 75MB - available for only around 30 days.

The chat was conducted over the phone, Ralph in Sydney (I think!), me at the studios of www.threedradio.com in Adelaide.

Excellent - thanks a lot, Michael 8)

Maybe I should also "reupload" the absolutely wonderful and very personal interview
he gave to Mandy Morton a couple of years ago? - if anyone here is interested that is?

I also have a great interview & live performance (4 songs) with Tom Robinson
on BBC radio 6 - from October 2006, I believe.

Let me know, please  ::)

Ah, that would explain. I have the first disc of Songs for Six Strings, and am assuming I have to go to 5 more concerts to get the rest, as they seem to be sold only @ gigs. Don't particularly mind, but it's a long haul and we're none of us getting any younger. ;)

I'm not sure enjoy is the right word.  Quite a heavy subject I thought,  'now then Mr Mctell,  tell about a miserable period in your life, for example when your dad left you.' At least it was a long way from, 'so SOL is about Paris.'  Interesting choice of inheritance track. I know these old recordings have some great guitar on but I have trouble getting past the 1930s sound quality.  I have an Arthur Blake Cd which I rarely listen to for that reason.

I know what you mean Carl. By 'enjoy' I meant Ralph seemed to sound interested in the format of these questions rather than the rushed inane questions put to him the other morn on the breakfast show. Therefore his answers, whilst most meaningful and reflective, sounded relaxed and flowed rather well. As we know from reading Ralph's books, if asked a seaching question he answers so eloquently and movingly and with some depth. Sometimes Ralph can hardly answer some of the questions that he's asked by presenters and journalists, especially those that haven't done proper research.

Ralph was interviewed by Moira Kerr of Celtic Radio before his recent gig at Langholm - go here  (http://www.celticmusicradio.net/category/events/studio-guests/).

Find the bit about Ralph, click on 'Catch up anytime', then, on the page that opens, scroll down to the link to the 2nd hour of the 13th October show. Ralph's on roughly quarter of the way through for around 20 mins.

Having begun in traditional British fashion with a discussion about the weather, and discussed SoL, the interviewer explains her shock recently when she discovered that a song she'd loved for years wasn't, in fact, 'trad', but was written by Ralph  ::) (Clare to Here).

It's a wide ranging interview, covering the reason he sings as at higher pitch than really came naturally to him on very early recordings, his first American tour (not entirely a success!), the Beatles, the reason Ralph is relieved never to have been invited onto Desert Island Discs and some interesting bits about his songwriting techniques.

The bit where, with typical modesty, he tries to play down the fact that he sold out the Festival Hall so early in his career, made me smile.  ;D I wonder if Moira Kerr knows that he did the same at the Royal Albert Hall?

At the end of the interview, after Somewhere Down the Road, Moira Kerr talks briefly about his performance in Langholm – she was clearly impressed by the multiplicity of his talents – and so she should be!  ;D

Ralph will be on Radio 2 tonight.  Friday Night is Music Night 8 - 10pm.

From Radio Times:
"... a themed programme of works to celebrate the recent 150th anniversary of the London Underground.  Welsh soprano Shan Cothi and singer/songwriter Ralph McTell perform music associated with London landmarks, including works by Handel, Mozart, the Beatles and Ralph McTell himself."

Title: Re: Ralph on the Radio

We recorded Friday night is music night and have just finished listening.  Since it was on the theme of London underground I was hoping for a mention of East Croydon station but inevitably got SOL.  It was good to  hear London Apprentice though and his final song of grown up love , 'Summer Lightning ' was excellent too.  I thought Ralph actually sounded a little nervous but Ken Bruce is clearly a man who knows more than sol.  He plays England every St George's day.

Oh, it wasn't Welsh soprano Shan Cothi, it was Welsh soprano Gwawr Edwards. There was nothing in Welsh so don't know why they replaced one Welsh soprano with another.

'BArges' was played on Radcliffe's show last night. MArk R. told a touching story about listening to it with a very young girlfriend. Almost too much info, MArk. Nostalgia is a tricky one on the radio.

It was poignant for me, though, because Not Till Tomorrow was my first McTell album, at about the same age Mark heard it. I played it to death on the family record player, girlfriendless, I'm afraid. The CD is okay but I have a suspicion it's been mastered at the wrong speed. Must check against the LP.

I feel I should respond? as I love any spark of life on here  :) I can sympathise with the first record heard, and how on hearing it again you can be transported back? or sometimes even forward! Zig Zag line has a whole new meaning when its your grandsons hand, "He knew me you know and and I knew him" personally I am often brought to tears at recognizing anew the depth of lyrics, and rediscovering Old songs have new meanings

........and the zig zag line came up in conversation for real with me the other week as I hiked the 7 sisters at Beachy Head with John Jones and the Reluctant Ramblers. I was telling a fellow walker about Ralph's song and was humming it as I descended the cliff in a zig zag line!! That's what I love about Ralph and his sensitive, meaningful songwriting, its real life and turns up and transports you, you never know when its going to strike!  ;)

The impact of Ralph's music and lyrics were very noticeable in the early 70s. It was much easier to get close to a partner sitting listening in rapt attention to Old Brown Dog than, for instance, the latest offering from Uriah Heep. Those of us with a tactical instinct learnt this lesson very quickly!
And picking up on the other thread - Zig Zag Line resonated with me when I first heard it as it reminded me of walks as a young child with my father on holiday in the Highlands and later in life with my own sons. (I'm still waiting for the grandkids to appear!).
Naomi is becoming more resonant with me these days!

(Slight negative comment: Much as I deeply respect Ralph, I'm starting to find the lack of news & info from Leola a little annoying, especially for things available for restricted times like this one. No printed newsletter for years, no updates to his website or emails from Leola for months. The Twitter feed on his website doesn't seem to be working either. It may just be me, but it starts to feel just a tiny bit like taking McRegulars for granted - i.e. we'll make sure we find out about gigs, etc, no need to let us know. Maybe I'm wrong- I know for sure that Ralph himself values his fans! I'm also aware that he knows that John and all at RA&S are keeping us up-to-date, but that's not quite the same to me as a regularly changing website or newsletters directly from Leola. Not sure the lack of new items on the website is good from the point of view of potential newcomers to Ralph & his music either  :-\ )

For those not on mailing list? In December 2013 Ralph performed at the Bert Jansch tribute concert, this was filmed as part of the programme "The Genius of Bert Jansch: Folk Blues and Beyond" we have just heard that this will be broadcast on BBC4 this Friday evening at 10pm, followed by Berts 60th filmed at St Lukes. Ralph will be appearing in both.

Ralph was the very first person I interviewed on radio, way back in 1987.  I've just found the cassette and have put the audio up on the show blog: http://rootsandbranchesaustralia.wordpress.com/interviews/ralph-mctell-1987/

Subjects include the songs Ralph had written for Fairport Convention, his songwriting method and disposal rate, the narrowness of commercial radio affecting the success of worthy musicians, his involvement with a couple of TV programs and more.

Just seconds in and reminded of couple in seat next to mine in Tewksbury. prior to show? I established they were local, supporting the theatre, Is he any good? I suggested they told me after the show. Great chat eventually I said "what gets me is he is on his own, I often hear other instruments" The wife puzzled said "what do you mean?" ....Well no band just the man himself on his own. Staring at the stage she said " was he on his own?"

I often wonder if he gets as frustrated at the predictability of interviews such as this one, as I was. apart from a mention of Albert Hall concert could have been from years back! Sorry Johnnie I found it disappointing. That said at least he got some airplay.

I love 'Soul Music' on R4 and have learnt so much about the songs and the artist/writer. One week a particular song ran through the life of footballer Paul Gascogine's sister, it was an incredibly moving and fascinating insight into the people and families affected by having a famous/infamous brother.

WEll, well....a very late night for those wishing to listen to this on broadcast.....

Ralph McTell at 75 (https://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/proginfo/2019/42/ralph-mctell-at-75)

Quote
Saturday 12 October
2.00am-3.00am (I think this is tonight!)
BBC RADIO 2

Ahead of the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards being held in Manchester on Wednesday 16 October, Radio 2 celebrates one of folk music’s most influential singer songwriters.

Streets Of London is surely one of the most famous folk songs ever in the UK. It is the one folk song that almost everyone has heard and can name-check. As he reaches his 75th birthday, its composer, Ralph McTell discusses his life and career and chooses the songs he’d most like to be remembered for writing.

Presented by author and journalist Mark Hodkinson, the programme features a brand new, arresting interview with McTell, who talks in depth about his childhood, his absent father, the song-writing process, his influences, successes, regrets and his legacy.

Ralph is also asked to choose the three songs from the hundreds he has written that he would most like to be remembered for, including Lost Boys, a song that laments the hypocrisy of how society views its young men.

Ralph McTell’s brand new album, Hill Of Beans, sees him reunited with legendary producer Tony Visconti - known for working with David Bowie - who was there at the beginning of Ralph’s recording career. The latter-day reconnection came about after a chance meeting on the streets of London, or London’s Marylebone Road to be specific.

Ralph will round off this landmark year with a special 75th birthday concert at the Royal Festival Hall on 13 December 2019.
Presenter: Mark Hodkinson
Producer: 7digital

For everyone else, it's either iplayer/Sounds app or record!
